Several levels of spatial sounds:

1- Mono
2- Stereo (differenciate right from left, east from west)
3- Spatial
right/left (easy) + up/down (hard) + front/back (very hard) + distance (not really)

Perception of spatial effects seems to improve when using personal head-related transfer function (HRTF)
-
Also improves when using head tracking (but requires special hardware).
