Public transportation in Los Angeles was rather poor at that time. If you walked around in residential areas, you risked to be checked by a police patrol. So the acquisition of a car was almost a necessity and enlarged considerably the possibilities to find a convenient and reasonably priced accommodation. Stiefel did not know how to drive a car when he visited INA. So  he had first to learn it which he did in a short time.
