- Do you sometimes spell your name as 'Aleks'?
- Yes, the official spelling of my name is Aleks.
All my ID's and official documents use the 'ks' spelling.
- Why isn't your official name spelled as 'Alex'?
- I'm a citizen of Turkey and Turkish alphabet doesn't
have the letter 'x'. So, the officials had to translate
the spelling of my name to conform with the Turkish alphabet.
(By the way, Aleks (or Alex) is not a Turkish name.)
- Then, why don't you spell it as 'Aleks' all the time and
forget about spelling it as 'Alex'?
- Because the real spelling of my name is 'Alex', not 'Aleks'.
Most people don't pronounce it appropriately when they see my name
spelled as 'Aleks' or have a hard time understanding that it is
equivalent to the name 'Alex' that they are used to see.
On the other hand, they immediately recognize and have no
problem at all when they see it spelled as 'Alex'. For this reason,
I like and prefer spelling it as 'Alex' as much as possible.
However, this has a disadvantage because I have to pay the price of
being careful to make sure people are using the official spelling ('Aleks'),
when it comes to be written onto some official document.
