Acads page for Arunchandar Vasan

I am a third year Ph.D. student in the Dept. of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. My advisor is Shankar. Contrary to what his link might suggest, he is not a macaw, but a real cool guy. Currently, he is very busy authoring a paper titled "SHIPS: A Scheme for Handling Incorrigibly Persistent Students". This would explain the protocol he uses to tolerate me, for the greater common good of the professorial community. I also work with Professors Ray Miller and Ashok Agrawala.

Course work

I am done with my course requirements having taken the following classes at UM:

Graduate Computer Networks
Performance Analysis of Computer Systems
Combinatorics and Graph Theory
Numerical Analysis-I
Randomized Algorithms
Advanced Topics in Computer Systems
Graduate Computer Graphics
Communication Protocols
Numerical Analysis-II
Computational Geometry
Advanced Software Testing

Research

If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research. Would it ? -Albert Einstein

My area of work is systems. I am interested in Computer Networks and Performance Evaluation. I am Shankar's research assistant in the z-Iteration project from Spring 2002.

Research motto: Everything is transient.

A one-line synopsis: My work involves developing tools for capturing transient evolution of network metrics using analytical methods, actual network measurements, and powerful approximations.

More information can be found off Shankar's webpage. I am currently working on models for Wireless LANs (WLAN), more specifically, the 802.11 standard.

My talks can be found here and my papers and research notes here.

Teaching

A good teacher is worth a thousand books -Anon

I taught CS106 as a teaching TA in Fall 2000. I was the TA for CS417-Computer Networks taught by Prof.Bhattacharjee in Spring 2001. In the summer of 2001, I taught at the Governor of Maryland Summer School. My last TAship was with Shankar for CS417 Computer Networks in Fall 2001.

If you are TAing a senior class at UM, you might find this Perl script useful. Basically, it saves you the trouble of having to mail your students their OIT accounts. It parses the testudo roster file and the OIT account file, which the instructor should be able to get you, and emails students their account information.

You might want to take a look at my page for CSGrad students.
