M.S.(Maryland), M.Phil.(HK), B.Eng.(HK)

Edward Hung is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Computer Science, the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) since April 2003. He was supported by Scholarships from the Croucher Foundation for his Ph.D. research during 2000 - 2003. He is now a research assistant under supervision of Prof. V.S. Subrahmanian. He received his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering and M.Phil. in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong in 1998 and 2000 respectively, and his M.S. in Computer Science in UMCP in May 2002. He was awarded a number of scholarships, including Epson Foundation Scholarship, the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited Postgraduate Scholarship, Stephen Kam-Chuen Cheong Memorial Scholarships, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Student Prize, etc. He has five conference papers, two journal papers and a book chapter related to managing ontologies, similarities and probabilities in semistructured databases, data warehousing, parallel data mining and E-commerce. The University of Maryland, College Park (August 2000 - now)

I am now a Ph.D candidate in Department of Computer Science of University of Maryland, College Park, which was ranked the 12th in US by US News.

I got A in 7 out of all 8 courses taken (for Ph.D qualifying course requirement, where 2 courses were waived for system area): CMSC424 Database Design, CMSC727 Neural Modeling, CMSC751 Parallel Algorithms, CMSC724 Database Management Systems, CMSC838S Human Factors in Computer and Information Systems, CMSC858K Approximation Algorithms, and CMSC838M Advanced Topics in Software Testing.

I got A+ in the remaining course: CMSC726 Machine Learning

For my M.S. course requirement, in addition to the above 8 courses, I got A+ in the remaining 2 courses: CMSC828A Advanced Topics in Information Processing: Independent Study by V.S. Subrahmanian (2 semesters).

Besides, I got A+ in: CMSC899 Doctoral Dissertation Research (1 credit in Spring 2002, 3 credits in Fall 2002, 3 credits in Spring 2003).

I have been working on database, data mining, E-commerce, data warehouse and approximation algorithm.

I have been studying various advanced topics in database (theory, mining, object oriented database, semistructured data, warehouse, etc), E-commerce, human-computer interface design, advanced algorithms (approximation algorithm, parallel algorithm, etc), neural network, etc.

However, I am also interested in various areas like systems, vision, AI and graphics.

The University of Hong Kong (July 1998 - July 2000)

Before studying the M.Phil. degree, I was a graduate of BEng of Computer Engineering in HKU. In 1998-1999, I got A in MSc courses: CSIS 6954 Advanced Topics in Database Systems, CSIS 6922 Fundamentals of Parallel Computing, ELEC 6062 Scalable Parallel Computing, and CSIS 6924 Algorithms.

My research was on database warehousing and data mining, under the supervision of Dr D.W.L. Cheung of the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, the University of Hong Kong. My research topic was about data cube and maintenance, parallel data mining.

I have been studying mining association rules, dense-region OLAP (DROLAP), clustering, R*-tree, outliers, data cube system design, parallel algorithm, set partitioning, etc.
