OVERVIEW: Please begin early, by about 2:15pm (water takes time to heat!) If you need a key to open the cabinets, it is either in AVW 3136 or in the possession of the shopping person. The kitchen (AVW 1151) is adjacent to the lounge (AVW 1152). Your main job is to take our food in the kitchen, arrange it, and place it in the lounge for consumption. Also, you need to make the coffee and heat the water. Don't worry if you don't get everything perfect by 3PM. If you forget something, or do something wrong, experienced people coming along after 3PM can assist. You can usually rely on your common sense, experience from attending coffee hours, and the checklist below. If you have trouble setting up, you should find Jared (jsylvest@umd.edu) or other experienced people on the exec council WELL BEFORE THE COFFEE HOUR STARTS. Note: We are using filtered water for the coffee & tea. You should find 4 gallon containers of water. The water in the kitchen is rumored to come unflitered directly from the Anacostia River. Please avoid using it in the coffee maker if possible. CHECKLIST: - Be sure to start the coffee and hot water first! - Get the cabinet/closet keys from the Shopping person (or in AVW 3136). That's right, the key is in **AVW 3136**. Someone is there almost all hours of the day to open the door for you. - The kitchen contains stuff which is ours and stuff which is not ours. Identify OUR stuff. OUR stuff is in the wooden cabinets immediately to the right of the sink, both top and bottom. Also, our stuff may be in bags sitting out on the counter or table, in case shopping person just dropped these items off shortly before. Finally, we may have some stuff in the refrigerator, usually with a paper bag containing coffee. Some reserve supplies are also in the closet (1152B). - Wash your hands, please! - Make the coffee and hot water first. The coffee machine should be plugged in by 2:25 PM. - Find a coffeepot in the kitchen with a matching lid, tube, and filter. This is usually sitting out on the counter. - Empty all of the (pre-measured) coffee into the filter. This is a metal filter, we don't use paper coffee filters anymore. - Fill the coffeepot with water up to the filter level with filtered water (should take about 2 gallons). - Assemble the percolator. The tube sticks up through the filter and the bulbous end fits into the bottom of the pot. - Fill another pot with water to the 30-cup mark (about 2 gallons of the filtered water). - Move the pots to the lounge and plug them in. This should be done by 2:25 - Make sure that the pots are near the edge of the table, so that people can fit their cups/mugs under the spouts. - If the folding table have been moved or put away, take them out of the closet and place them in front of the long whiteboard. Usually 2 tables are needed. This is a 2+ person job. - Put out the following items near the coffee: - teabags - hot chocolate mix - styrofoam cups - sugar and/or sugar substitute - creamer - stirrers - Put out the following items on the other end of the tables: - napkins - paper plates - sign-up sheet and pen (found in cabinet) - Find the plastic trays. They're somewhere in the kitchen, usually sitting out on the counter or on top of the fridge. If not, borrow some from Adelaide - they are located in the 4th floor printer room. - Arrange food on the trays. Put out all of the food that you find (unless it appears to be stale, in which case, please throw it away). The food may be out on the table if just brought by the shopper, or in the metal cabinet or in the refrigerator. The arrangement depends on what you find. Some items may require cutting up. There is a chef's knife and cutting boards in the kitchen drawers. Put things together that obviously go together: - bagels (cut lengthwise) with cream cheese - apples (core & cut up) with caramel dip - vegetables (cut up) with ranch or other vegetable dip - crackers + cheese cubes - chips + salsa/cheese/guacamole - cookies - cakes or pies (cut into thin slices) - oranges (cut up) - TIP FOR ADVANCED USERS: Don't put all the food out at once. It will get consumed faster. If the food is released gradually, it will last longer. However, this does require more effort on your part. - Try to arrange the tables and chairs in the room so that people have more room to walk around to get food and drink, sit down, and socialize. - If it's not yet 3PM, take a break. Come back by 3PM. - See that the keys get passed to whoever is doing Cleanup. If not possible, leave them in AVW 3136.
