COMMON ANSWER: 50.

TRICK ANSWER: 46. Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania
are all commonwealths.

I call this a stupid question (or perhpas a stupid answer).
There may be a very very technical difference between a state
and a commonwealth. There may not even be any difference.
I am puzzled- I have heard Puerto Rico called a Commonwealth,
and that is different (they do not vote in US Prez Elections,
they do vote in Primaries, they do not have reps in congress or the senate).
