Self-driving RC Car Taxi Project

Jun 2016 - Feb 2017

With huge global companies like Tesla and Uber jumping into the 'self-driving car' era, we imagined a future with self-driving taxies. A future where users do not have to worry if they can grab a cab or not, but a taxi nearby will be automatically assigned to the user, and safely transport them to their destination.

3 friends of mine and I have built on this idea by creating self-driving RC cars. We created a small road that would work as a map in our simulation and a Raspberry Pi camera on the ceiling to operate as a satellite. The two RC cars were built with Arduinos and Raspberry Pis with a camera on front to determine the driving algorithm using OpenCV. I was in charge of implementing the navigation algorithm and assembling the cars.
Our projected was selected as one of the student projects to be funded by Creative Challenger Scholarships (Korea University).
