Introduction
I am a fifth year graduate student at the University of Maryland at College Park. I recently proposed my dissertation research topic, which makes me a candidate. I am still busy trying to get papers out to conferences. I am the happy recipient of a 2009 Google Ph.D. Fellowship.
I am affiliated with the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL) here at UMD. I also work closely with the people at the Cornell Information Science Department (where my advisor now resides). I interned at Microsoft Research Cambridge in the Summer of 2008 and this summer I am spending time at Ricoh Innovations.
Accordingly, my interests are in HCI, particularly in the area where hardware meets user interfaces. Here are some of things I'm working on at the moment:
- Improved electronic reading devices
- Automated tracking of how people interact with paper (primarily reading)
- Design and testing of interfaces for pen-based computing
- Power consumption-aware interfaces
- Digital document navigation
My advisor, Francois Guimbretiere, serves the important function of telling me my research ideas have already been done by [insert person/group], Y1 years ago.
1 So, at first Y was about 10 years, but now I'm getting closer to 5. I hope that by the time I graduate Y < 0.
