El grupo MAPEN fue formado par de anyos atras (como en el 1996) por un grupo de Boricuas (alrededor de 10 personas) que estabamos estudiando en la Universidad de Maryland, College Park. Acostumbrabamos ha comunicarnos via e-mail hasta que uno de los miembros sugirio que pusieramos un mailing list para asi facilitar el comunicarnos unos con otros. Es asi como el mailing list mapen@cs.umd.edu fue creado. Desde ahi en adelante, a medida que conociamos a mas Boricuas le explicabamos a cerca del grupo, y a cerca del mailing list, y como el mismo nos permitia mantenernos en contacto con otros Boricuas. Hoy en dia, la lista tiene sobre 700 miembros y sigue creciendo cada anyo.
La MAPEN trata de organizar actividades que permitan al grupo compartir en familia. Por ejemplo, todos lo anyos se organiza un picnic. Tambien, tratamos de participar en actividades como conciertos, festivales, y salidas a clubes en DC, etc. .
El nombre de MAPEN fue algo que me tuve que inventar para establecer el mailing list. Nunca tome el nombre seriamente, y use lo primero que se me ocurrio: Maryland Association of Puerto ricans looking for EntertaiNtment (MAPEN). Como veran, no era el mejor nombre pero en en aquel momento nunca pense que el grupo iba a crecer tanto. Para hacer el grupo un poco mas formal se decidio cambiar lo que MAPEN representa. MAPEN ahora representa: (Maryland Association of Puerto ricans of the EasterN) section of the USA.
Desde que se formo el grupo, he tratado the mantener vivo el grupo de MAPEN a traves de los mailing lists y el web page del grupo. Me gusta la idea de mantener a los boricuas en comunicacion e informados de asuntos que esten relacionado a Puerto Rico. MAPEN es un grupo informal y todas las personas que son parte de los mailing lists estan bienvenidas a sugerir ideas y organizar actividades que promuevan la unidad de la comunidad boricua residente en el area de Maryland/VA/DC.
Espero que el grupo MAPEN siga creciendo y sirviendo como medio de comunicacion para los boricuas que estamos en el area. Cuando alguien nuevo llega al area, se nota cuan contento se pone la persona cuando encuentra a otros Boricuas; si la MAPEN hace esto posible, entonces la MAPEN esta cumpliendo con su compromiso.

The MAPEN group was formed few years ago (around 1996) by a group of Boricuas (around 10) which were studying at the University of Maryland, College Park. We used to communicate with each other by using our e-mails. At some point one of the members suggested it would be easy if we establish a mailing list, so that we didn't have to type and remember our e-mails. After this suggestion mapen@cs.umd.edu was created. From this point on, as we begin to meet new Boricuas, we begin to tell them about the mailing list and how it was a good way to keep in touch with other Puerto ricans. Today, the list has over 700 members and it keep growing every year.
The MAPEN group tries to organize activities that bring the group together. For example, every year we organize a picnic. Also, we try to go to activites where we can spent some time together as a group (concerts, festivals, etc.)
The name MAPEN was something I have to come up with in order to set the mailing list. I never took the name issue seriously, and the first thing that came to my mind was: Maryland Association of Puerto ricans looking for EntertaiNtment (MAPEN). As you can see the name is not the best one, but at the time I never thought the group will grow like it did. To make the group a little more formal it was decided to change the name to the present one (Maryland Association of Puerto ricans of the EasterN) section of the USA.
Over the years, I have tried to keep alive the MAPEN group by maintaining the mailing lists and the web page for the group. I like the idea of keeping Boricuas in touch with each other, and informed of any issues that might be related to Puerto Rico. MAPEN is an informal group and all the persons that are part of the mailing lists are welcome to suggest ideas and organize activities that help create a strong Puertorrican community here in the Maryland/VA/DC area.
I hope MAPEN keeps growing and serving as a communication mechanism for all Boricuas in the area. When someone new comes to the area, you can see how happy they are to find other Boricuas; if MAPEN can achieve this, then all our effort has paid off.
