Traffic Classes

Traffic classes represent end-to-end connections. A traffic class has the following parameters:

Source node and destination node
Start time and end time (in seconds)
Bulk TCP connection or UDP connection
A bulk TCP connection transfers data as fast as possible subject to the TCP profile (i.e., congestion control) and network condition. A UDP connection generates packets according to a Poisson process of specified rate.

Routes of a Traffic Class

Packets of a traffic class are routed on a shortest path from the source to the destination. When there are multiple shortest paths between two nodes, one of the shortest paths is randomly chosen and it is used by all traffic classes established between the two nodes.

Routes are computed by doing the Compute Routes command or the Compute Metrics command. Once the routes are computed, you can observe the path of a traffic class by selecting the traffic class in the Traffic View; this highlights the path in the Topology View.

To Add a Traffic Class

Use the right mouse button menu command Start Traffic From Here on the source node, and Destination Here on the second one, then fill the desired traffic class information in the dialog that appears. To cancel the traffic class creation, use the Cancel Class command, which appears in the right mouse button menu.

To Delete a Traffic Class

Use the right mouse button menu in the left window side tree control and choose the Delete Class command.

To Modify a Traffic Class

Use the right mouse button menu in the left window side tree control and choose the Properties command.

To Load/Save the Traffic Classes

The entire traffic specification for a network can be saved in a file (and reloaded later). This is useful when you want to analyze multiple types of workload for the same network topology. To do this, use the Load Traffic and Save Traffic commands from the Productivity menu. It is also a possible to delete all the traffic classes by using the Productivity / Delete All Traffic command.

To Automatically Generate TCP Traffic

Use the Generate TCP Traffic command from the Productivity Menu. Fill in the parameters in the dialog that appears.
