Prof. Satish Tripathi-
an example of excellence



Prof. Satish K. Tripathi, the Chairman of the organizing committee for the Convention'96, has a distinguished career. He is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. He served as the department Chair during 1988-95. He attended the Banaras Hindu University, the Indian Statistical Institute, the University of Alberta, and the University of Toronto. He is a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. He has been on the faculty at the University of Maryland since 1978.
Satish was born in the village Patna of Faizabad district (UP) on January 20, 1951. His father, Mr. Rajendra Nath Tripathi, was a Hindi Education Officer in Tripura. He is currently retired and lives in the village. Satish spent the first 13 years of his life in the village and completed high school (grade 10) education in the village. In 1964 he moved to the Governement Intermediate College, Faizabad and started his hostel life. In 1966 he enrolled at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi for his undergraduate education. Satish completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Statistics) in 1968 and 1970, respectively. He received gold medals for obtaining first positions in his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in the university. He joined Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, as a research scholar in Computer Science in the fall of 1970. After completing a year in Calcutta, he joined Electronics Corporation of India Ltd., Hyderabad as a technical office and was involved in the operating systems development for TDC-16 series computers. In thefall of 1972 he moved to Canada and for the next six years he continued his student life in the bitter cold climate. The family moved to Maryland in 1978.
Satish's wife Kamlesh is a daughter of Mr. R. A. Pandey, a retired principal of Lucknow. Kamlesh and Satish have two sons Manish and Aashish. Manish was born in May 1976 (Toronto, Canada), while Aashish is a born American (February 1979). Manish is at Stanford and Aashish is in 11th grade. Satish has been very active in collaborative projects with Indian computer scientists. Currently, he has joint projects with many IITs (Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi) and commercial organizations. He has organized many joint Indo-US workshops and has been UNDP and World Bank consultant to the Government of India on computer network related issues. His research interests are in networks (mobile computing), multimedia, and real-time systems.
