Honors 208W - Image Portfolio Description

Over the course of the semester you will take many pictures and create many images. In addition to a general collection of all of your image files, you will need to maintain an annotated, online, portfolio of selected images from your collection for this class. Your portfolio should be organized so that friends and family who might visit your site after the semester is over can not only see images that reflect various course topics, but also read a description of the topic each image or set of images reflect.

For each of your photos used, you should (at a minimum) have the date the photo was taken and the camera settings and a description of any modifications made to it by you. There might be times when you are asked to include a photo or image that is not yours; in these situations, you will need to identify the source of the image. More details will be provided later in the semester, but you should start thinking about which photos you might want to use as you take photos for this class.

There will be some portfolio assignments where I will inform you of something specific that needs to be added to your portfolio, and what the description needs to include.

You will need to maintain this portfolio online. We will be looking at different ways in which we can put pictures and commentary on the web, and then you will be able to choose how you would like to create your final portfolio from the available resources.

Ways in which we can make images available online:
    :
  • Via your Flickr account - you can upload images, give comments and tags to images, and organize them in thematic sets. Everyone has been using them for the photo assignments so far and can use this for the portfolio as well. To do so, simply create a Set in your Flickr account called HONR208W and add any images that you post for this class that are for your portfolio to that set. Remember to add them to the class group and tag them as well if they are specifically for a photo assignment. Please note that Flickr has a monthly upload limit (I think it is currently 200MB per month) so you might want to scale your images down to (for example) 800x600 before uploading.
  • Via your GLUE/GRACE accounts' web space - you can upload images as shown in class using Secure FTP and then create HTML documents to organize and discuss them. We will explore HTML a little later in the semester. You'll still need to post some things to your Flickr account, but you can also put those in this web space or can simply link to the Flickr page from your web pages here.
  • Other techniques you might know of... If you use some other type of online portfolio, just send me e-mail at egolubUMD@gmail.com letting me know to look there. You'll still need to post some things to your Flickr account, but you can also put those in your portfolio or can simply link to the Flickr page from your portfolio.
  • At several points during the semester I will review and grade your portfolio, and send suggestions and feedback as appropriate.
