CMSC 434
Homework #1
Spring 2003
Due Wednesday February 5th.
Remote controls are notoriously difficult to use. Is there a reason?
For this first assignment, you must examine (at least) 2 remote controllers
that you are familiar with. They can be used to control any device,
except for remote controls that are designed for keychains (cars, alarms,
etc.) The goal is to look at remote controls that control a fair amount of
interaction complexity.
Note: You can choose to examine video game
controllers if they are intricate and allow for many options during
the game but you can not do something such as "redesign" an N64
controller down to a joystick with a 'fire' button.
-
You need to do the following for each of the remote controllers you select:
- Write a half-page analysis for the control
- What tasks are the remotes used for?
- Who is the intended audience?
- How well do they work?
- What is difficult and what works well?
- Make suggestions for improvements within likely real-life constraints
(budget, production, size, etc.)
- Show the "before" and "after" images for the control
- Include a photocopy, picture or drawing of the original control.
- Include a drawing (hand or computer-based) of the redesigned control.
Note: The pure artistic quality of your presentation of the "after" version
will not affect your grade, but showing a clear effort at trying to make it
look good will be a part of your grade on this homework. In other words,
if you have difficulty drawing a straight line, use a simple "paint" program
to help.
