The following is a basic description of one of the five project options
available this term.
The general project 1 rules and
hardware rules
apply to whichever specific project option you choose.
Computer Science Department Visitor Application - PDA based
The Computer Science Department regularly has visitors. These visitors
typically give talks, meet with other faculty, learn about what is going
on in the department, etc. A schedule is arranged for them before they
arrive, but it is fairly common for details of the schedule to change
during the course of the day. When the visitor meets with faculty, it
is common that they do not know the person they are meeting with and so
it would be nice if they had access to information about the person before
they met. In order to facilitate these visits, the department plans on
purchasing PDAs that will be lent to the visitors for the day. These will
be PocketPC hand-held devices with 802.11 wireless network access to the
department's network.
Your job is to design and implement the interface on both the PDA as well
as the authoring tool on the PC server that the host will use to plan the
schedule.
This PC host authoring tool should include at least the
following features (add more and say why if you discover some during
your process):
- Ability to author a schedule (in 30 minute increments)
- Ability to change a schedule entry (even if they have the PDA with them
already)
- Ability to link to home page of any person on the schedule
- Ability to send instant messages to the visitor while they have the PDA
- Schedules should be from 1-3 days in length
The PDA tool should include at least:
- The visitor's current schedule
- Indications of changes to schedule since the visitor last looked
- Contact information for dept. (host, dept. office, etc.)
- Ability to read instant messages
- Information about the people being met
- A map of A.V. Williams Building
