Highly entertaining

I was not expecting much from this film, given that Ernesto Guevara is played by a Mexican actor. However, Bernal does an okay job of portraying the young revolutionary leader, accent and everything. The man that steals the show, though, is Rodrigo de la Serna, the actor who plays Che's travelling buddy. It was a delight to watch him in the film; he is a very good actor indeed. <br />During the film we see a young Guevara transform from a fun loving man to one that is aghast by all the poverty and social injustice he sees in his journey through South America. We therefore witness the birth of the man that became the controversial "Che", the one who died in the jungles of Bolivia. <br />The Motorcycle Diaries has a lot of funny moments that had a lot of people laughing in the cinema. My favourite is when Che is trying to dance "merengue" as if it was "tango." However, watch for De La Serna, he provides most of the funny moments by far. <br />The scenery was fantastic, I had no idea South America was this beautiful. <br />The music was great too, you can never miss if you play Perez Prado. <br />I recommend this film, you won't be disappointed. All however seem to have never found out what a bloody heartless fraud <br /> <br />One does not in any sanity compare Cuba (still under a 45 year trade embargo inflicted by the USA) to say Canada or Norway but rather just as in lab science like should be compared with like. <br /> <br />Compare Cuba with Haiti. Haiti and the Haitian people have suffered and continue to suffer far worse conditions and lives as a direct result of being under the official American system (WTO, WORLD BANK, IMF, corporate colonialism). Cuba is no paradise but Haiti under US dominance has consistantly been and continues to be a far worse nightmare for the poor to live under. <br />A perfect example during the 1990's when an American labor activist negotiated between Haitian sweatshop workers and Disney for whom they make toys and clothes for the Disney stores, the workers told him they were on 20cents an hour. So he asked them what they needed and wanted thinking as an American $5 an hour or whatever...they asked for 60cents an hour as even in Haiti you cannot feed a family on 20cents an hour. So the activist went back to the US and met with Disney. Disney refused the pay increase. The same year the same Disney executives voted to pay one out-going CEO who had been on the job for about 18months and had presided over a loss in corporate share value, a golden parachute worth over $100 million. In Haiti workers have no medical care and factory death-squads have a long history of leaving organisers in a ditch by the side of the road. During the Clinton years food export to the USA from Haiti went up by about 30% along with starvation inside Haiti by 30%. I am not anti-trade on the contrary Cuba's poverty is a result of a lack of it under the embargo. But in the case of Haiti the people got nothing back for the out-going increase in exports. Good Film On Its Own

If you just disregard the political undercurrents that lurk in the film, you'll likely enjoy it. As an adventure, right of passage movie it is interesting and entertaining. Both humorous and dramatic, the acting is top notch. And the cinematography is well done too. The beauty and diversity of South America is nicely portrayed. Road Trip ... Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?

OK. It's a good movie. Worth seeing. The photography is fantastic and the transition between affluent fun to social conscience is handled nicely and nearly seamlessly. <br /> <br />Americans, North Americans, probably make the better films. This is not necessarily a good thing. It's just the way it is. We have more highly trained actors, more equipment, more advanced technology and let's face it, more money. So seeing the 'best foreign film(s) of the year' has an element of 'how ARE the Joneses doing?' <br /> <br />And in that regard, this film comes out well. $25.00 date night film? Possibly not. Without the adulation of a lot of cleavage and somber men at the Oscars? Possibly not. <br /> <br />Garcia Bernal does a great job as Ernesto Guevara, and although less sexy or sensual I thought Rodrigo de la Serna was the better actor as Che's compatriot travelling in South America on the last fling before responsibility, de la Serna as a biochemist and Che in medicine. <br /> <br />Their trip through South America in 1952 does sow the (at least) recognition of social injustice and the frequent and painful victory of money and greed over humanity. It seems tasteless to point out that historically this concept, inhumanity to their fellows by the ruling class, is about 6000 years old. Ain't nothing new here, Che. <br /> <br />The problem that arises for us as viewers (you still need viewers to make it successful unless you're into that "tree falling" philosophy) is that this tends to canonize Che. If so, the quality of the movie should be sufficient to withstand the fact that a lot of people aren't going to sit around and accept that view. They're not going to buy into it. <br /> <br />The movie does seem to encourage that and giving it credit, witstand it. Perhaps this is not so for those that see Che as a romantic Don Quixote reflected in their reaction to those who would point out that Che became a violent revolutionary, involved in the imprisonment of thousands and the death of at least hundreds. This is part of his life, or the life that he embraced, and critics need to feel a willingness to point that out in the absence of villification. It is a valid point. <br /> <br />One reviwer mentions that Che had a choice too, he could have become Ghandi. He chose Trotsky. That's his decision and it runs afoul of what we have formulated as human social justice for the above mentioned 6000 years. <br /> <br />If you make a movie about Mother Teresa, you may not like her because she's a woman. You may not like her because she's a Christian. But you can't say she believes in the violent overthrow of the governmemt. With Che, it's a fair shot. <br /> <br />Another fair point for us, the Norte Americanos, is that we are sometimes bigoted in our views. And the heavy handedness in which we pool all of South America, Central America, Mexico and Puerto Rico into the "latino" umbrella, has painful recollections of life in the United States pre-Civil Rights Act of 1964, which in and of itself had it's own shortcomings. And we did that with this competent film as well. Perhaps serving up Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana at the Oscars as "latinos" was another unintended racial slight. Yet Jorge Drexler coming up on stage to accept the award for Best Music and not making a tedious political speech (it's the Oscars, not the Party's National Convention) but rather singing his song was pretty good, wasn't it? 4 stars. Best Movie to come out in years

I saw this at a little art-film theater in January and was absolutely mesmerized by it. For all that you hear about Che's years as a great Cuban revolutionary, I really knew woefully little about what had driven him to become such an influential man. <br /> <br />What starts as a feel-good buddies on the road together story slowly transitions into a deep film about the human condition, as Che's perspective on the world deepens and matures. I can't believe they only charge $12 for this

What you get for the money is far and away above most DVD's that give you much less in terms of special content. This is also a special commemorative edition because it's a little older and usually they also cost even more, but not this one. Boy oh boy, this includes both versions of the film, widescreen and PS, in case you loved the theatrical, or caught it later on video. The extras are all personalized and funny. Interviews with the cast and director, a review of the year in independant cinema breakthrough, Sundance film festival reviews of the directors and their films. Critics at the festival who offer their view on the film, scene specific commentary from various people involved in the production, a dedication to various influences on the film by Tarantino, and much, much more. My favorite thing was to listen to the raw audio tracks of Stephen Wright recording his DJ work with Quentin, hilarious. The film is now considered a masterpiece of unique proportions and yet it also talks about certain things in it that might have derailed that success if the public hadn't been open to them, such as the violence. Overall, a great presentation of a very influential and seminal film. It almost gives you too many special features, which is rarity. Great Cast --So so screenplay

This film has some great individual performances most notably from Harvey Keitel who is as usual fantastic in it. Having seen Pulp Fiction many times prior to watching this for the first time it is clear how much more developed the screenplay and how much more witty the dialogue is in Tarrantino's follow up to this. That aside it is a good first effort and the violence is unforgettable. Basically a bunch of low-life hoods bungle a theft and chaos ensues. Some of the scenes were very obviously improved upon and utilized again in Pulp. Peckinpah's Good Old Gung Ho Fatalism

The film is another great Peckinpah fatalistic film where our dubious hero goes all out to set things square. <br /> <br /> Warren Oates plays a great role as the shady American ex-patriot who retrieves the head of Alfredo Garcia, a Mexican Don Juan with a bounty on his head (quite literally) after looking up the wrong skirt. Isela Vega plays Oates' sleazy girlfriend who knows where Garcia can be found and wants to join on the quest and reward. The audience follows Oates' journey through Mexico in search of his morbid prize and is kept in suspense as he seeks to overcome the challenges he encounters along the way. <br /> <br /> Again, this is a typical Peckinpah film where there's a very fine line between the heroes and their antagonists. The fatalistic ending follows the traditional ending genre common to his other films such as the 'Wild Bunch' and 'Cross of Iron.' Altogether a great movie that is entertaining, particularly for men, to watch. Scarface: One Word....Brilliant

When director Brian De Palma completed a project called "Scarface", wrapped it up, and sent it to the Motion Picture Association of America, it got sent back, undeniably an X rating, claimed to be highly controversial and inappropriate, with its extreme violence and "harsher sexually derived language". De Palma and his crew spent countless hours in the editing room, cutting -what we now see as memorable- parts of the movie. <br />Eventually, De Palma was incredulous about the film giving the same appeal to people if edited, and succeeded in persuading them to allow it to be viewed to the public, to which they reluctantly gave in. With an approved rating of "R", the frustrated De Palma returned back to the uncut, original version, and released it nationwide in late 1983, after two agonising years of production. <br />The epic is set just over three years ago, in 1980, as Cuban refugee hoodlum named Tony Montana rises to be one of the most prolific gangsters, and one of the biggest distributors of cocaine in the Miami cocaine empire. However, his overconfidence, desire for more, and lack of trust in anybody else apart from him leads to his untimely downfall, in which costs him dearly into a rousing climax. <br />With the New York Times calling it, "Stylish and Provocative", and Time Magazine hailing it at "Exhilarating", Scarface has definitely placed its mark in history, with its boldly imaginative display of polished style and captivating thriller, (well it was about damn time Hollywood gave us a rare and decent action thriller.) <br />Sure the plot may seem crude, as those who do not comprehend the art view this as a "good ol' fashioned drug gangster movie", but the deep thought and detail that goes into it is unparalleled, in the hands of De Palma, Bergman and Stone, though let's not forget the acting talents of Pacino, Bauer, and Pfeiffer that made this epic come to life. <br />Indeed, what was undoubtedly startling, was Pacino's depiction of the lead character in this epic, in stark contrast to his tiny number of previous roles, forcing us to abandon, from our minds, the portrayal of the careful, considerate Michael Corleone Pacino mastered in both The Godfather legends, even though both motion pictures are of the same genres. Mmmmm.....

I had the origianl disc. It seems that not many were buying that one at the time. It also seemed as if not many had DVD players either. <br /> <br />I watched this alot on DVD(origianl). When this new one came out, I did not buy it because I already had it. I knew that it needed remastering bad. I did not know how bad until I watched on a HDTV! Like "Strange Days," the original "Scarface" was encoded in the wrong way. On an HDTV, you have to resize it to fill the screen. That is the reason I decided to purchase this newer version. <br /> <br />Without telling the story, this version has encoded the disc correctly. Qulaity wise, there does not seem to be much difference between this and the old one. This one has taken the very strong film grain of the original out. It has been replaced be a smoother picture at the expense of some detail. I guess this may be good. The strong film grain was really noticable on a SDTV. A crime classic!

<br />Al Pacino plays as Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant whom arrives in Miami Flordia to become the cocaine king of the city and the most successful one at that. However, it becomes a living hell when he fights against the other mobs of the city, his sister having affairs with other men and his relationship with a beautiful woman named Elviria ( Michelle Pfeifer) is mixed when he's going out killing for Coke ( the drug, not the drink). <br /> <br />This happens to be Al Pacino's signature role! this 1983 crime drama is a definite epic of the genre, it was trashed by some critics but made a decent box-office success and a huge cult following even among today's hip-hop stars. This is a brutal, gory and entertaining 3-hour tour-de force from director Brian De Palma that is definitely not for everybody but it's a must see movie and one of my top 109 favorite movies of all time. <br /> <br />The new 2-Disc anniversary Edition DVD has awesome picture & great sound quality. A masterpiece

A lot of fun

First of all this movie is a lot of fun to watch - even at close to 3 hours long it goes by fast. While I know this movie may not be everyone's cup of tea, the one star givers need to lighten up! IT'S A MOVIE not a documentary - if you want that go to A&E or BBC. While I do not know much about the history of the Trojan war, as an educated professional, this movie did not insult my intelligence. The only reason I would not give this movie 5 stars is the simple fact that I seriously feel Brad Pitt was miscast as Achilles. I do not dislike him (I just think he is better suited to the "Oceans ELeven" roles), but the fact that whenever he would come on screen, I would think "oh, it's brad Pitt" really destroyed his credibility as Achilles. I however did enjoy the masterful portrayals by Eric Bana and Peter O'Toole as Hector and King Priam. The screenplay is great, not so for the directing...

This movie could have been twice as good in the hands of another director. Some of the lines are both written and delivered horribly, even by normally competent actors like Brad Pitt. I'm not extremely familiar with the story of The Iliad, so I can't really comment on all the changes to the plot. I know that the role of the Greek gods was almost completely excised, however, and thus Troy is a demythologization of Homer (in the same way that The Thirteenth Warrior is a demythologization of the "Beowulf" story). Some people hate this, but I think it works. In a movie version of this story, I would rather see what likely happened in the battle for Troy than Homer's souped-up version that has the gods flying around on the battlefield in their chariots like superheroes. Pitt portrays the man-killer Achilles and his thirst for glory well, but Eric Bana is even better as Hector. The battle between these two heroes and the events that follow are extremely powerful and heart-wrenching. The battle scenes are reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, but sometimes the cinematography is horrible. My wife noticed this also; needless to say, she is not someone who says the word "cinematography" often, so that's really saying something. Why in the world are people complaining about how close this movie is to the Illiad. I have never read the Illiad, and I never plan to. It is better to watch Troy than read the Illiad because Troy is shorter, and you can actually see the battles. Troy was a great movie. It starred Brad Pitt (the dude from fight club), Eric Bana (the dude from hulk), Orlando Bloom (the dude from LOTR), Brian Cox (the dude from X2), and Sean Bean(the dude from Goldeneye). if only there was intelligent life in hollywood

First of all, shoot the writer. When you are working with Homer as a source--show some respect! Then shoot the producers. The Iliad is not a romance. Killing off Menalaus half way through the movie--just stupid! Briseis kills Agamemnon after the fall of Troy? Huh? What are these people thinking? The list of really unnecessary plot adulterations goes on. Oh, I know Hollywood producers probably thought they needed a love interest for box office reasons, but even that could have been handled with a little more subtlty and without looking truly ridiculous, which is really all I can say about the ending. They could have pulled off a really great movie.<br> All that said, I'm still giving this 4 stars. Maybe I'm just a sucker for this stuff because the TV Helen of Troy, though more true to the story, was a little disappointing. The Iliad really does need the kind of epic treatment Hollywood can give it, if only Hollywood had the brains and sensitivity to the material they are working with to do it justice. And there are some pluses in the movie besides just the lavish spectacle. I've heard many people mock the choice of Brad Pitt as Achilles, but I really thought he did the role justice. His Achilles really has a chip on his shoulder and he sulks through the part in real heroic style. Whatever else I didn't like about the script I did think it captured what motivated Achilles pretty well, and even the rather modern anti-war touch that came out at times was not overdone. The fight scenes, particularly the climactic encounter with Hector, were brilliantly choreographed. This is not so much a movie as it it simply @$$ kisser to the fans of the game. Plot ides traight out of every zombie movie ever made,charaters either appear and die or jsut live to say stupid tough guy dialogue. The movie wouldve seemed lame at any point in time with plotholes the size of craters. The movie tries to cram alot plot in for the lack of anything inovlving charchter. No atmosphere!

From my experience, all sci-fi films need one very important ingredient... and this is ATMOSPHERE. Its the foundation block for all great movies in this genre. From classics like Star Wars to new favourites like The Matrix. They tell not just a story, but also of a world different to the one we reside in. That is the heart of a great sci-fi. Without it, characters, plot, nor action can develop. This is where Resident Evil Apocalypse falls apart. From the beginning we are rushed into an established storyline. It begins with a few words from the narrator, explaining the damage already done... and instantly we are expected to follow the paper-thin characters on their journey to righteousness. Its difficult to really care, when we are given little time to absorb the horror of a city under fire. Scenes flip from one character to another, each with a separate agenda. Everything is robotic, human interaction and emotion is minimal and the impact of armageddon is ignored. Its derivative, ironcially much like a computer game, you get bitten... its game over. That is it. <br /> <br />The influences are all there, simplified, squeazed and chopped together. <br /> <br />'Dawn of the Dead' a generic town is ravaged by a zombie outbrake shown in a TV report like fashion <br />'28 Days later' she wakes in a deserted hospital <br />'Terminator' dressed in a full leather with a mini gun. <br />'Robo cop' Remembers friend and defies command to KILL <br />'Tomb Raider' Girl with two guns wrapped around her thigh <br />'Aliens' aliens <br />'Matrix' the action <br /> <br />In the end, it has little originalty, and fails to improve on past formula. Post Viral-Apocalyptic films like Omega Man, Dawn of the dead series and 28 Days Later do a much superior job in creating a world in chaos.. the hysteria, tension, loneliness, despair, humour. GREAT ACTION SEQUENCES AND BEAUTIFUL ACTION HEROINES!

"Resident Evil: Apocalypse" is to be recommended to those who enjoy good action films. The movie has some breathtaking action and fight sequences that are nearly non-stop (Along with the unnecessary blood and gore, which seriously detracts from the film). The best thing about the film is Milla Jovovich and Sienna Guillory. They can look incredible and kick serious behind at the same time. Their beauty and guts give the film a great boost! Fans of films like "Aliens" and the "Terminator" trilogy will truly enjoy this one, while others may be turned off by the graphic violence. Even better than the first

I, unlike a lot of people, found this to be a very enjoyable movie. The thing I think few people take into consideration is the fact that Alexander Witt probably didn't set out to break new ground, all this film does is build on what we were left with in Resident Evil. The special effects are tremendous, a lot more detailed than the first one. The acting in a few scenes is a bit shallow but this is an action movie, of course it's not going to have great acting throughout the duration of the film. The exception to that statement is Sienna Guillory who plays the gorgeous Jill Valentine. I can't think of a single person who could play Jill as well as she did. She seems to have settled into the role with ease. And we can't forget the amazingly talented Milla Jovovich reprising her role as Alice. To watch her fight and shoot is pure exhileration. She also has become so much tougher in this one due to the injections of the T Virus she was given. <br /> <br />This movie starts off with a brief recap of what happened in the first film, other than that it picks up right where it left off. The plot is as follows. Racoon City has become a garden of rapidly growing numbers of undead. The Umbrella Corporation has taken it upon itself to quarantine the city, this means building a massive wall that circles the entire city. No one gets in, no one gets out. We are then thrust into heart pounding action sequences and all the things you loved about the first film. The small group we, the viewers, follow consists of Alice, Jill, Carlos, and Dr. Ashford's daughter. They must get to a designated building to then climb effortlessly onto a helicopter and fly off into the sunset. Things don't go as planned, however, and chaos ensues. <br /> <br />The lead characters couldn't have been cast better, Milla and Sienna's chemistry is evident and meshes very well. The addition of Jill Valentine was a good call and I feel that the franchise will be carried out very well with Jill being the main character. <br /> <br />The special features are surprisingly a nice little bonus. We get a ton of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews as well as 20 deleted scenes. Normally I'm not one for special features but the things included in this are done well. We are also treated to a few trailors to other films. <br /> <br />Overall this movie is worthy of the name Resident Evil. It follows the game very well and the characters are represented very well. Looking at War and Politics Sideways

This was Oliver Stone's career highpoint and it is a technically proficient movie. It is most importantly an effective political statement. However, it has not worn well in comparison with the realistic (Hamburger Hill and We Were Soldiers), the allegorical (Apocalypse Now) and the schizo realistic/personal journey (Full Metal Jacket)versions of the Vietnam War. Do not buy this movie because you think you will learn something about fighting in the Vietnam War or any other war. Also do not buy it if you think it will be enjoyable to watch repeatedly; it has too many hokey tricks such as colored lenses, actors stage posing from classical theater, and all of the over-emotion of a teenage horror movie, behaviors which soldiers don't exhibit. However, it is a great way to look sideways at the adversarial politics of an unhappy time in America. American soldiers and what they do in war are the same in all of our wars. This movie makes the argument that those American soldiers, privates to generals, are bad, victims or stupid, or some combination of those. Platoon Best war movie ever

Platoon captures the heart of the Vietnam war. It is a gut wrenching story of war,loyalty and betrayal. For someone who was not alive to be able to see and almost feel what their parents and grand parents live through during these times is remarkable. It shows the struggle between soldiers who believe in the war and those who dont. It shows that no matter who you what you did or how much money you had, in war everyone is the same. It shows you a side of war most movies dont it shows you the dark side. Most war movies show you about the American hero who takes on the enemy by himself. Platoon shows us some of Americas bravest as well as some of the most disgusting people that America has to offer. It is a story of one rich kid that didnt want to sit back and watch all the poor kids go to war while he stayed in school to aviod war. <br /> <br />I for one dont like many of Oliver Stones movies but for some reason this movie is different. Stone is usualy all about the conspericy or the cover up in this film he drops that and he simply wants to tell the story. Review: Oliver Stone's Platoon

I like Tom Berringer and a fair amount of the acting was OK. however, as a Vietnam combat veteran I found Oliver Stone's portrayal of day-to-day life in a combat unit to be a silly characiture of what it was like. Gladiator & modern military socialism - a great film !

The movie "Galdiator" stars Russell Crowe. I enjoyed the film. <br /> <br />There is also the book "Gladiator" by Professor Martin Winkler that examines the movie at length and it is also available through Amazon. <br /> <br />One favorable surprise is that neither the movie nor the book mention any straight-arm salute, misnamed the "Roman salute." That is because there is no evidence or text that show a straight-armed salute as an ancient Roman salute. That is probably because, before the movie was made and before the book followed it, the historian Rex Curry had already debunked the "Roman salute" myth and showed that the salute (and the of the National Socialist German Workers' Party or "Nazis") originated from the military salute in the USA, and from the original flag pledge (as written by a socialist), and not from ancient Rome. <br /> <br />The Roman salute myth might have developed from fictional Roman scenes in these films: the American "Ben-Hur" (1907), the Italian "Nerone" (1908), "Spartaco" (1914), and "Cabiria" (1914). You can buy some of those films and see for yourself the evolution of the original pledge salute, the salute later adopted by German National Socialists. The original pledge of allegiance predated all of the movies and used a straight-armed salute (from 1892 as written by Francis Bellamy). The Roman salute myth might have sprung also from the fact that Francis Bellamy (the author of the pledge of allegiance and of its original straight-arm salute) was from the city of Rome (in the state of New York, not in Italy) and people and things from the city in New York state were referred to as "Roman" and still are today. Francis Bellamy (the person who created/popularized the misnamed "Roman salute") admired ancient Rome and its militarism, grew up the city of Rome in New York (where he and his neighbors were known as "Romans,") and was educated in the "Rome Academy" there. <br /> <br />The history of the Pledge would shock every libertarian mind. The "Roman salute" myth is used in the same way that the word "Nazi" is used. To cover-up for socialism. To cover up the fact that government inside the U.S. promoted socialized schools, military socialism within government schools, the creation of industrial armies, and daily robotic pledges of allegiance in military formation with the infamous straight-arm salute (the Nazi salute) and it happened in the USA three decades before the Nazis. Francis Bellamy was the USA's Leni Riefenstahl. That is why he and his famous cousin, Edward Bellamy (the author), are known as the first American Nazis. <br /> <br />The book "Gladiator" also details parallels between the movie "Gladiator" and the National Socialist German Workers' Party. However the book's tired stereotypes perpetuate the myth that the National Socialist German Workers' Party slaughtered the most people. Here is one sample quote "The Fascist and Nazi movements exploited this fear of the uncontrolled masses to impose their own leaders." The book never indicts the Socialist and Communist movements and their leaders. The socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part) involved the socialist trio of atrocities: 62 million killed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 35 million by the Peoples' Republic of China; and 21 million by the National Socialist German Workers' Party. <br /> <br />But it was a very entertaining film in all other respects.B00009ZYBY51A2Z2MUZ76N5EY712005-03-15

Give it as a gift to anyone who has a home theater; they will always invite you back to their home. This is a guy's movie; an epic film of battle scenes, heroism, courage, loyalty and honor. My buddy Beau went to see this movie a week after it opened. We had heard a lot of hype about the "film" and we were very excited about the potential orgiastic cinema experience that lay ahead! Needless to say this is the cinematic equivalent of blue-balls. Never before have I left a theater with a feeling of such utter disapointment. I am still waiting to see the version that was screened for members of the academy, because the version I saw was about as Oscar-worthy as "White Chicks". A+ for Crowe and Phoenix.Greater political drama than action

`Gladiator', directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe succeeds, like `Spartacus' and unlike `Troy' because it is less about action and violence than it is about politics and righting a wrong. In fact, except for the opening battle scene with the Russell Crowe improvised line, `On my signal, unleash Hell', the combat direction and filming is not as well done as Brad Pitt's battle scenes in Troy. This is not to say `Gladiator' did these poorly. It's just that the real interest is in the political conflict between Commodus, Marcus Aurelius' son, played to the hilt by Jaoquin Phoenix and Crowe's character, the Roman general Maximus. <br /> <br />Regarding the historical action and scenes, I think the film's set designers, costumers, set decorators, and special effects artists got almost everything almost exactly right. In fact, it is a great treat to see talented special effects put to good use on something other than star destroyers, Nazgul, and vampires. The effects lavished on the Coliseum were not just for the sake of impressive size. They added lots of very effective touches such as the relatively recently discovered awnings used to shade the fans in the upper bleachers. Combat, both in pitched battle in Germania and in the arena is very well researched. It was an excellent little touch to see Maximus loose a sword, only to instantly draw a backup sword from his saddle and continue reigning death and distruction on the barbarians. It's amazing how a minor inaccuracy can ruin the effect of some of the very best movies, such as when modern tanks were used in battles between Americans and Germans in North Africa in `Patton'. You would think they could scare up at least a dozen American Sherman tanks and a half dozen German Mk IV's. Similarly, I really began to wonder why Aurilius' daughter seems to be wearing but a single style of earring throughout the whole movie, which covers at least a year of real time. <br /> <br />Note that most of the special effects really succeed better on the small screen than they do on a big theatrical screen. The seams between live action and the effects seem to be a bit less noticeable. <br /> <br />I have been a Russell Crowe fan since I saw him in `LA Confidential' and I doubled my respect for his abilities when I saw his appearance on the Bravo interview show, `Inside the Actor's Studio'. In that one-hour interview, he revealed a greater insight into the craft of acting than the interviews of William H. Macy, Robert Redford, and Robin Williams all rolled into one. If any actor can be said to have inherited the mantle of Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Montgomery Cliff, it must be Crowe. In this interview, he said that the cast and crew began shooting the film with not much more than an outline. This may seem typical on a Jim Carrey or Robin Williams comedy where the producers are reasonable in expecting the great improvisational talents of these actors to carry them over the rough spots, but this seems inconceivable when you are shooting a historical costume drama with a budget of over 100 million dollars. It turns out that some of the most effective lines in the movie were Crowe inventions on the spot. The importance of Crowe to the movie cannot be underestimated, as the intensity drops by several notches when Crowe is not on the screen, and by several more when neither Crowe nor Phoenix are on the screen. <br /> <br />The three veteran character actors, Oliver Reed as the gladiator master, Richard Harris as Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and Derek Jacobi as the Roman senator, Graccus, competently carry out their roles, but none are quite as convincing as the second string actors in the great Masterpiece Theatre series `I, Claudius'. Their performances also cannot hold a candle to the similar roles in `Spartacus' played by Peter Ustinov, Laurence Olivier, and Charles Laughton. I think this is not from lack of talent, I think it is from poor writing. The only other important role, Marcus Aurelius' daughter, is very weakly played and written. Against Crowe and Phoenix, the part really needed a much stronger presence such as Angelina Jolie, Hillary Swank, or Charlize Theron. These quasi-historical characters need both powerful performances and recognizable faces so you instantly know this is an important character, since they will probably be on the screen for less than a quarter of the movie. <br /> <br />All of this is interesting to gab about, but the real meat of the movie, again, is politics. This shows that even in dictatorships, even those backed up by hereditary legitimacy, having the backing of the nobility and the army was required to carry out your agenda. As far as I have been able to determine from my reading of history, much of this story is fictional, based on the real Emperor Marcus Aurelius, his campaign against the Teutons, his death, and the succession of his son, Comedus. I can find no trace of the character Maximus. Crowe's description of the genesis of the character in his interview convinces me that he is pure invention, which the writers were to name `Narcissus'. Crowe talked them out of that one. But that is neither here nor there. The drama is based on the fact that as a gladiator, Maximus gains the favor of the crowd by his victories in the arena, and Comedus cannot dispatch him except in a public venue. <br /> <br />I must say that the music written for the movie, especially for the dream sequences when Maximus anticipates returning to his family in Elysium (heaven of Roman religion), is especially effective, even if the tunes and the vocals have a very strong Gaelic sound to them. The dream melodies would fit quite nicely into the elven scenes of `Lord of the Rings' as they do in ancient Rome. <br /> <br />`Gladiator' may not endure as a classic like `Spartacus', but Crowe's performance alone is worth the price of admission. <br />B00009ZYBY52A7F4A7RZVIAQK22005-03-03

Absolutely Wonderful

First off, I just have to say that this is a fabulous movie in every possible way: the screenplay, the acting, the action, and even the soundtrack are all top notch. It really doesn't get much better than this! I also want to respond to the review titled "pure hollywood" by king wolf, where the reviewer criticizes the scene where Maximus and Commodus battle in the Colosseum. This scene actually has historical significance! Commodus, whose character is fairly strictly based on the Roman emperor of the same name, did battle gladiators in the Colosseum as a way of showing off for the people of Rome. Although he wasn't killed this way, he was assassinated by an athlete! So, king wolf, if you were slack-jawed during that scene, it was for the wrong reason. Truly a great special effects display!

Matrix and Revisited are spectacular special fx. You won't be disappointed. This is edge of your seat spectacular. The plot is good, too. I've watched this multiple times. the best of the Trilogy

They should of just done this one cause it is the best and one of thegreatest movies of all time, if you don't know it stars Keanu Reeves as Neo or Thomas Anderson, carrie ann moss as Trinity, Hugo weaving as Agent Smith, and Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus who is like a spiritual leader or some sh-T. This movie has great fight scenes like the one in the lobby with all the guns n sh-t. If you havent seen it, then what are you waiting for.

I loved every minute of this action packed film. The sequencing of it is perfect, the storyline is amazing and different. The cast is great, escpecially Laurence Fishburne. <br />Its not a film that is going to change your live for ever. But it does make you stop and think. Total Testesterone Immersion - Not Good for You

Some special forces types, complete with improbably large muscles and weapons that were surely never meant to be portable, are helicoptered into a jungle somewhere in Latin America with a mission of rescuing some hostages from some guerrillas. Muscles notwithstanding, these seem to be singularly inept special forces: the guerrilla camp arrived at the blunder in, with absolutely minimal reconnaissance to determine basic little things like, duh, where the hostages are located, blowing everything they see sky high and, surprise surprise, all the hostages end up dead. Seeming entirely pleased themselves they then start heading back only to find themselves being picked off by a mysterious semi-invisible alien thingy. <br /> <br />This is the first commercial success in the career of John McTiernan, the 1990s' master of the clunking explosion laden action movie and he is clearly starting as he means to continue. While hugely successful, it's pretty dumb stuff. Even the most basic movies in which we see a bunch of soldier types being picked off by some evil enemy thing usually manage to endow the soldiers in question with discernible character traits which do at least some work in driving the narrative. In this movie they start out as The Guy With Glasses, the Black Guy, the Indian Guy and, by the time they get round to being eaten by the alien have failed to fill out these basic classificatory tags in any interesting way whatever. Comparisons with `Alien' can only be particularly embarrassing. The latter gave us a brilliantly designed, truly original and very scary monster. This gives us, well, a guy in a not very scary monster suit. <br />Major Duke ( Arnold Schwartzenger)and his recruits ( Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Shane Black and Richard Chaves) go into the South American jungles to rescue innocient hostages. Soon they discover that a sneaky alien creature begins to hunt the team down then slaughter them one by one, as Duke must try to find a way to defeat the unseen enemy force. <br /> <br />A supsenseful and really violent Science Fiction action adventure that has became a genre favorite even with it's box-office success and fan base. There are some gore in this movie that may not be for the squeamish, but it's action and pacing never lets down the viewer especially with it's good special effects, the creature itself is quite a unique kind of alien monster that is fully armed with invisibility mode and all kinds of deadly weapons designed and created by Stan Winston. <br /> <br />This special 2-Disc Edition is an improvement over the original badly transfered bareboned with only trailer DVD, it has a great and informative audio commentary by the director. Another lousy transfer

WOW - one of my favorite movies and the transfer is only slightly better than the previous issue. The DTS also is only slightly improved. WHEN are they going to give us a high-def. transfer and remove the grain. If GWTW -1939 can be done, so can Predator. SHAME on them all. You wait, another one will probably be coming in the next yr. and we can all dump this copy to buy that one. So - don't upgrade yet.
