It's better than you'd think.

I don't know why Waterworld keeps getting slammed. Waterworld isn't a brainless and turbo-charged film. Instead it keeps you thinking, it makes you have to adjust to what an apocalptic world might actually be like. The people who live there have a totally different life than we have, and a different vocabulary for things in the past ("Go juice" is the gasoline smokers use for their jetskis). <br /> <br />Also, I found Kevin Costner perfectly easy to identify with. He's a mutant and doesn't trust humans, and he spends the whole movie trying to learn to accept them. <br /> <br />I thought Waterworld is also perfectly believable, unlike other futuristic films. The props and sets, down to the last detail, show a world that is so totally unlike our own and could come to exist. <br /> <br />Overall, the storyline is about a group of people who had lived in an Atol, one mutant (Kevin Costner), and the smokers looking for dry land, which is supposedly a myth to them. Excellent Comic Book-like Action Adventure

I own a copy of this movie on VHS and have watched it repeatedly. It is a top notch action movie with a great deal of creative inventiveness. I especially appreciate how the lead character's, the Mariner's, boat is like an extension of his body. The precariousness of human life in this movie mirrors that of the Mad Max movie's own desert-like apocolyptic world with its symmetrical opposite, a world "buried" in water. <br /> <br />I'm a fan of Kevin Costner's quiet characters (which remind me of Keanu Reeves' characters). The young girl played by Tina Majorino (awesome name by the way for the actress behind this character) was a hoot and a good opposite to Kevin Costner. Her being annoying is intentional and a source of a lot of great dramatic tension and intended laughs. Dennis Hopper is a comic book evil genius in this movie. <br /> <br />I think the movie packs a lot of great "sci-fi-apocalypse" ideas in it that make it come off as intelligent, especially after several viewings. Why Costner?...He's bland!...

Kevin Costner (whose acting ability I usually compare with a bail of hay)does slightly better than a bail of hay in this movie covered in jet skis... If you like plenty of explosions and future pirates, than hold on tight, 'cause there's plenty! Also, Kev drinks his own pee in the beginning--I was hoping for the machine that purifies his pee to malfunction...but he seemed satisfied with his own (...). <br /> <br />Personally, I think Mr. Costner is better off doing Crest commercials or something...anything that keeps him relatively far from the human eye. How were so many roles forced on such a warehouse worker? One of the best comedies from the 80's

If you want a flash back to punk rock, traveling Europe with no money and trying new pick up lines, this has it all. I especially love the 'you look like Bambi' reason he couldn't get a girl. Truly a murphy's law movie and if you haven't seen it, you don't know what you're missing. What a flashback! Personal involvement

I enjoyed this movie for two reasons. One, I was stationed in West Berlin during the final years of the Cold War and had personal involvement with Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall, and watching Mig aircraft flying overhead. Number two, we watched them film some scenes with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino (hubba hubba!) on Mehringdamm right below the windows to our barracks rooms! It was really cool watching the movie at the Air Force theater across the street and recognizing scenes where they filmed. Just a fun movie!

It's no James Bond, but it's no Top Secret either. Gotcha has some real humor, but not at the expense of a storyline or real suspense either. Gorgeous scenery, and Paris ain't bad, either.

"For England, for home, and for the prize!"

This magnificent, swashbuckling epic takes place during the Napoleonic Wars, aboard the British frigate, HMS Surprise. Russell Crowe stars as Captain Jack Aubrey, whose orders are to destroy, or take as prize, the Acheron, a large French warship off the coast of Brazil. Most of the film concerns the day to day life aboard ship and we get to know the men very well. The Captain is a warm, intelligent man who enjoys puns and playing the violin as much as he loves the sea. There is the ship's doctor, Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany), the Captain's friend and confidant, who saves lives (including his own) and delights in studying the rare animals of the Galapagos Islands. Young Midshipman Blakeney (Max Pirkis) is one of many boys who are learning about the sea and will one day be captains of their own ships. The crew have two battles with the Acheron, where the Captain asks each man to beat the enemy for England, for home, and for the prize. <br /> <br />I expected this to be like Mutiny on the Bounty, showing a lot of miserable, abused sailors suffering harships on a long sea voyage; happily I was wrong. The crew are well-treated and admire and respect their Captain, and he likes them. He is a refined gentleman as well as a fierce fighter and knowledgeable seaman. Russell Crowe rates a 10 on the Macho-Meter. He is gallant, brave, handsome, and kind in a very appealing performance. The story is told at a leisurely pace, allowing us to feel like we are on board, feeling the rolling of the ship, the camaraderie of the men, the adventure of it all. The battle scenes are exciting, but not gory or cruel. Certainly a 'lightweight' movie ...

I managed to squeak out 3 stars on this baby primarily because of the fabulous effort of the movie to portrait the proud sail warships and the excellent battle scenes ... but .. thats about as far as it goes .... <br /> <br /> <br />Any simillarity to REAL history and what life was like on these war ships is purely coincidental. The images of life, aboard as a sailor or an officer are way way off. A captiain that is pleasant to the officers and sailors... I dount it .. a Dr suggesting all the rum be thrown overboard ... I doubt it ... The Doctor operating on himself for bullet wounds without anesthetic .. doubt it .. Brit captain gets stabbed by the French Captain and they let the French gut live .. i really really doubt it .... Worth it for the soundtrack alone!

Can I rehash what 477 other people said about this film? Not really, except to sy that I enjoy it every time I watch it (just finished). <br /> <br />I haven't noticed anybody mention the sound track, which is made up of timely fiddle music and orchestration mixed. As good as could be hoped.

I write this as a devoted fan of both the O'Brian novels and of great filmmaking. <br /> <br />Master and Commander is an extraordinary piece of work - a tribute to the vision of the director, the skill of the actors, and the brilliance of the screenwriters. <br /> <br />Nothing is perfect here. There are some annoying technical errors - the Surprise sailing quickly with her sails essentially backed, for example (non-sailors won't see it, but it will rankle those who know sail). Paul Bettany, who gives a marvelous performance as Steven Maturin, is just too damned pretty to play O'Brian's prickly surgeon/spy. It's a concession to Hollywood, I suppose. <br /> <br />This may prove to be the finest performance of Russell Crowe's career. Crowe has always impressed me with the upper end of his range, but he's never impressed me with the incredible subtlety he displays here; the level of detail in his work here is mindblowing. He IS Jack Aubrey, who may be one of the most intriguing characters in modern literature. Aubrey's compassion, hubris, arrogance, passion and sensitivity are positively nailed in Master and Commmander. <br /> <br />Now, a word on the writing. O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin tales are too complex to be rendered on film - think Lord of the Rings, five times over. So instead, Peter Weir chose to crystallize the essence of the O'Brian books into one movie. He and co-writer John Collee succeded beyond hope. The movie takes its primary guidance from two of O'Brian's books but grabs snippets from all of them - and comes up with gold. There are visual throwaways throughout - this is as reverential and, in its way, faithful a screenplay as I can think of, and it manages to be so despite the fact that the source material is a challenging and daunting read. <br /> <br />This is not a movie that will appeal to everyone. Small-minded O'Brian fans may feel cheated by some of the shorthand; there are some technical and continuity errors; people who believe that movies should contain romance will feel cheated; those who look for continuous slam-bang action will get bored and if one really wanted to parse one could probably find lots of other things wrong with it - considering what passes for great movies nowadays (I confess I read a number of the one-star reviews here and just shook my head - this ain't Star Wars, folks - there's a real story here). <br /> <br />So be it. The Price of Justice in A Civil Action

In A Civil Action John Travolta plays Jan Schlichtmann the hottest young lawyer in Boston. He is a personal claims lawyer with a successful small practice and he is one of the 10 most eligible bachelors in Boston. Jan will do anything to win a case. During the progression of the story, he narrates advice to the audience as if a he is a law professor. It is this instruction that he himself does not follow and thus leads to trouble for himself and his clients. The movie, in this way, is almost as much about the apparently unreasonable reason behind litigation then it is about the individual case it portrays. <br />We are introduced to the way Jan Schlichtmann operates in a dark yet amusing prologue. This shows Schlichtmann pushing one of his unfortunate clients into court, fixing his pillows, getting him a drink, and wiping his face. All while the jury tries to choke back their tears, and the defending lawyers frantically try to settle before the trial begins by writing increasingly large settlements on a pad for Schlichtmann's approval. While this is all going on Schlichtmann gives a brilliantly deadpan voiceover, explaining how much you can expect to receive for various types of injury and which types of clients are worth more in winning cases. He concludes "that whites are worth more than blacks, men more than women, the rich more than the poor and a long agonizing death over a quick one. A white male professional in his 40's, in his prime earning potential, is worth the most and a dead child is worth least of all." <br />Everything is going well for Jan and then a case with at least 10 dead children drops into his lap. This case is known as an "orphan" as it has landed in every prominent lawyer's office and all have passed on it prior to him. But Schlichtmann's firm takes on the case when he discovers that culprits are owned by two of America's major corporations WR Grace and Beatrice Foods. But for the families, money isn't the point, and all they want to know is what happened, and for the responsible parties to come over and apologize to them for their loss. The thing is, "corporations apologize with money," and if the corporations have deep pockets, it's a case worth taking, so money does indeed become the point in A Civil Action. From then on, we get to watch a characteristic David versus Goliath clash, which involves the lawyer with his limited team and funds and the huge corporation with unlimited resources and a very clever lawyer (Jerome Fasher) heading its case. <br />Schlichtmann does a couple things during the case that leads ultimately to his downfall. First, he gets personally involved. In a news broadcast, he holds up snaps of the Woburn kids who have died. He shows empathy, which is a grave disservice to the legal profession because it clouds his judgment. He says it's like a doctor recoiling at the sight of blood. That leads to his demanding of WR Grace and Beatrice Foods a multi-million dollar settlement, including money for a research foundation, to cover expenses, and to provide for the families for thirty years, which the corporations refuse, which in turn takes the case to trial. He does this without consulting his partners, which doesn't sit well. James Gordon, the accountant, points out that they need to work on other cases to provide a cash flow. Schlichtmann has sunken a million into the Woburn case, and pretty soon, they teeter on the waterfalls of bankruptcy to the point of mortgaging their homes. It's become a source of pride, which has undone many an attorney as opposed to idiot witnesses, lousy evidence, and the hanging judge put together, as Jerome Fasher (played by Robert Duvall) tells his law class. <br />Fasher, the attorney for Beatrice, is a statesman-like man of experience, but has a isolated yet eccentric personality. He is a knowledgeable man, and his observation on the justice system is true, but at times appalling. When Schlichtmann tells him he's searching for the truth, he tells him, "You've been around long enough to know that a courtroom's not the place to look for the truth." And he truthfully says that the case stopped being about children the moment Schlichtmann filed for action. <br />Robert Duvall gives an excellent performance as Jerome Facher, Beatrice's attorney, who is the complete opposite of Schlichtmann. In a scene at a fancy hotel conference room, the frugal Facher is not impressed by any of the lawyers or their arguments, but the free pen that he can take home. It's a subtly funny scene that illustrates Facher perfectly. <br />The film does a great job in presenting the feelings and priorities of those injured by the negligence of a corporation. Often people think that money is everything in a civil trial, but this example shows that that is not always the case. Some of the characters evolve greatly during the story, understanding what is really important and what is superficial. This film initially gives an impression of a film where a greedy lawyer grows a conscience and starts out on a quest to defend the less privileged. But, even though the subject is not new, the way in which the story is presented and the performances by John Travolta, and especially Robert Duvall, make this a decent production nevertheless. <br />The blurb on the jacket claims that A Civil Action is "The best legal thriller ever." I personally believe this quote does the film a major disservice, because by calling it a "thriller" it gives the audience the idea that this is going to be something standard and Hollywood, with the obligatory "Hollywood" ending, and it's not. It's based on true events and exposes our legal system bare, it shows the impartial brutality of the adversarial system, and how one mans flaws can be amplified by that system, until they consume not only him, but all those around him. <br />Trials and lawsuits are examples of how corrupt and rotten the legal system and some lawyers are. Is it worth having a system where the first party to come to their senses (i.e. to cut their losses and call for a settlement) is the loser? A Civil Action also shows that despite the need for compassion, it's better to have a lawyer who thinks more with the head than the heart. This film shows startling conclusions about our Justice system, and that is what A Civil Action chooses to focus on more so than the true story it tells. The film shows the price of justice and how justice is understood in the legal process. In fact, it draws a very fine dichotomy between non-legal and legal justice and shows how hard it is to get "justice" in a legal setting. Needless to say, it becomes a very expensive ordeal full of interpretations of the law and unfortunate manipulations of it. How much are you worth?

This is one of those typical movies in which the greedy lawyer grows a conscience and starts out on a quest to defend the less privileged. But, even though the subject is not new, the way in which the story is presented and the performances by John Travolta, and especially Robert Duvall, make this a pretty good production anyhow. <br /> <br />Travolta plays Jan Schlichtmann, a successful lawyer that measures everything in terms of money, including the life of others. For example, the perfect victim / client for him is a white male professional in his forties, while the one that has the least worth is no other than a child! Jan is one of Boston's most eligible bachelors and is having a ball; he believes he is above everyone else and does not care about mundane events or tragedies that other people may suffer. One day though, he receives a call from a client while he is on a radio show on air, and has no other option but to follow through on the case; at least so as to look a little better in the public eye. <br /> <br />The case involves kids getting sick, and some dying, due to water wells contaminated with ethylene. Jan knows that since the victims are kids there is no real money in the case, so he is reluctant to take it. But when he is leaving town something catches his eye; the small tannery believed to be the culprit is owned by a huge company with various subsidiary companies, including the producer of Tropicana. From then on, we get to watch a typical David versus Goliath fight, which involves the lawyer with his limited team and funds and the huge corporation with unlimited resources and a very clever lawyer heading its case (Duvall). <br /> <br />The film does a great job in presenting the feelings and priorities of those injured by the negligence of a corporation. Often people think that money is everything in a civil trial, but this example shows that that is not always the case. Some of the characters evolve greatly during the story, understanding what is really important and what is superficial. Brilliant but ultimately sad portrayal of an uncivil system

Sometime in the late 1960's, a hideous act of pollution took place in Woburn, Massachusetts, a small town north of Boston. Over the next fifteen years, twelve people died of leukemia. Eight of those were children. The firm of Jan Schlichtmann, Kevin Conway, James Gordon, and Bill Crowley take on the case on behalf of Anne Anderson, a woman who lost her child to cancer. For her, money isn't the point. All she wants to know is what happened, and for the responsible parties to come over and apologize to her and the other families. He begins by talking about which types of clients are worth more, i.e. are winning cases. Whites are worth more than blacks, men more than women, a long agonizing death over a quick one. A white male professional in his 40's, in his prime, is worth the most. A dead child is worth least of all. Well, Schlichtmann finds out that children are worth something after all, especially when he imagines an agonizing scene where the LaFierros were taking their son to the hospital and died en route. <br /> <br />While John Travolta's best known for Grease and Saturday Night Fever, A Civil Action proves he can handle serious drama and he turns in one of his best ever performances. However, the real Jan Schlichtmann came to Farmington. He's close to seven feet tall, and in terms of resemblance, could've been played by Richard Gere. As Anne Anderson, Kathleen Quinlan is the other great performer, playing a woman changed through her ordeal into someone who has a tired and sad visage. The scene where Al Love (James Gandolfini), a conscience-stricken tannery employer personally apologizes to her shows that maybe the only real meaningful apologies come from humans, not corporations. <br /> <br />Trials and lawsuits are examples of how corrupt and rotten the legal system and some lawyers are. Intelligent and Compelling Courtroom Drama

Jan Schlichtmann (Travolta) is a Boston tort lawyer and something of an ambulance chaser who is initially reluctant to take on an industrial pollution case involving some children dead of leukaemia in rural New England. He changes his mind when he realizes the likely defendants are a couple of big companies with particularly deep pockets and smells the possibility of serious money. Over time, however his interest in the case becomes a moral obsession. The cynical becomes a crusader, refusing offers to settle as his company's finances spiral downwards towards bankruptcy. <p>If you like courtroom dramas, this is highly recommended. It's one of the best specimens of the genre to come out of America since `The Verdict'. It's interesting to compare it to `Erin Brockovich' released a couple of years later. EB is about how a heroic small timer takes on the big boys of corporate America and how her pluck and determination triumphs over all obstacles, something of a legal feelgood movie in other words. Which this, to its great credit, is not. Its central character, for starters, is far more amibivalently likeable: initially just out for a fast buck, moral seriousness has to creep up on him and take him by surprise (perhaps reminding writer/director Zaillian of Oskar Schindler whose story he scripted for Spielberg a few years earlier) and the story's development paints a significantly more ambivalent picture of what pluck and determination can accomplish. The book is SO MUCH BETTER

The movie is fine... but the book is an amazing read. There is so much detail and nuance lost in the adaption to a visual medium.Amazon.comJonathan Harr's nonfiction bestseller was a shot in the arm for those seeking more than last-minute heroics akin to a John Grisham thriller. Here was a labyrinthine case involving industrial pollution by two highly regarded corporations, contaminated drinking water, and the deaths of innocent children in New England, circa 1981. The case has hundreds of twists and takes our hero--a steady, respectable lawyer named Jan Schlichtmann--and turns his life into personal disaster. Instead of celebrating the law, the story is a maddening and rewarding look at the elusiveness of the courtroom case. <p> Steven Zaillian, who won an Oscar for adapting <I>Schindler's List</I> and directed <I>Searching for Bobby Fischer</I>, boils Harr's 502-page book into a complete, satisfactory film experience. Book readers will no doubt jeer the streamlining Zaillian had to perform to make the movie flow. Most changes can be quickly defused with the exception of the film's portrait of Schlichtmann. The lawyer has been turned into a movie star, an ultra-slick, cold-hearted gentleman who finds his purpose in working the case. Casting a stalwart John Travolta again diverges from the book, which right from the opening pages showed us a Schlichtmann with feet of clay. As Schlichtmann's partners (including William&nbsp;H. Macy and Tony Shalhoub) descend into the case, the unbridled sense of power and money is abandoned. This case is ultimately about survival. <p> Zaillian provides an excellent narrative for the sordid facts of personal injury suits, in which money is the only reward for lost or broken lives (deftly introduced in the film's opening scene). Zaillian also stays away from dwelling on the illness of the children involved, focusing on the gaunt faces of the parents who survive (Kathleen Quinlan, James Gandolfini) in controlled anguish. His evil characters--an industrial plant's owner (Dan Hedaya) and a corporate lawyer (another fine acting spin by director Sydney Pollack)--are so human it's terrifying. Zaillian's final ace in the hole is Oscar-nominee Robert Duvall. Perfectly cast as Travolta's opposition, Jerome Facher, Duvall steals scenes with the abbreviated dialogue; he turns a fancy settlement meeting into a farce with one line. Facher is not a callous, love-to-hate-him lawyer like James Mason in <I>The Verdict</I>. Facher represents the law at its brilliant foundation: to best represent one's client. I was big into army and all the stuff young boys use to be. <br />I have this in my collection today and am happy to have it there. <br />It is full of great actors at their beginnings. ...and nobody has realized what this movie is: <br /> <br />IT'S A RUSSIAN-MADE WW2 MOVIE RECAST INTO A WW3 AMERICA. Motherland invaded by vicious invaders. Ordinary people band into partisan bands to fight the invaders; most of them die, but in the end we learn our side won. This is one of the standard Government-approved WW2 movie plots of Soviet-era Russian film-making. <br /> <br />And fairly technically accurate: as far as I could tell, the Russian uniforms, weapons, equipment, vehicles, and what I could see of the tactics were accurate to the Russian army at the time the film was made. (The khaki-spots-on-green KVKV camo uniforms had been introduced for real less than a year before, and the various marks of AK assault rifles were what would be issued to the various troop types.) <br /> <br />Naturally, the flick got (and from the reviews here, still is) denounced as Propaganda for The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (TM). However, there is an apocryphal story that Red Dawn inspired an internal shakeup/investigation in the Russian military -- the "farfetched fantasy" scenario (limited counterforce nuke strike followed by special forces land invasion from pre-secured Latin American staging areas) was apparently close enough to an actual STAVKA contingency plan for war with the US that the GRU/KGB was sure there'd been a leak.079283804142A3JPPR6JT75N0E32005-01-26

Anytime, Ivan!

I was recently at a mega-truckstop convenience store along I-20 in Texas and as I was at the counter, I noticed several stacks of Red Dawn DVDs poised to fly off the shelves into the expectant hands of gun-totin', Bible-belted, Texas patriots. And this is TWENTY years after the movie came out! No wonder the Soviet Union collapsed. Red Dawn was the only mainstream Hollywood movie outside of Chuck Norris's B+ films brave enough to confront Communism as the Evil Empire. On my "Jane Fonda Has a Hissy Fit Scale", this movie ranks a 10. The opening scene with the commie commandos parachuting in the schoolyard and blasting away is the fulfillment of at least two archtypal fantasies: 1)this is exactly the scenario that justifies my last trip to the gunshow, and 2)a world in which you will never have to worry about turning in your homework. Talk about connecting with the male gestalt! <br />The only problem I have with this movie is I could never buy into the feasibility of a limited war between superpowers that involves part of the U.S. being occupied. It seems to me that if the conflict ever went that far, nukes would not be off the table. But if you can get beyond that tactical hurdle, the backyard war against Communism is irresistable to the Conservative heart. completely over the head of both liberals and nationalists

If I were to say nothing else about Red Dawn, it contains perhaps the most awe inspiring (while, perhaps, simultaneously stupid) opening of any film I've ever seen. Watch for a South Park, "they killed Kenny.. " moment as a student hangs out a window in a backround shot of the attack on the school. <br /> <br />Unfortunately, squabbles between America's right and left have twisted this movie's meaning into something almost unrecognizable. Maybe I am mistaken (certainly, most of the other reviews would disagree with me) but I have never thought there was anything which fundamentally constrained this film's theme to the time and place it is set in. The director, John Milius, takes pains (his characters sometimes explicitly mouth the connection)to draw parrallels between the guerilla actions in the film, and those which occured in Afghanistan, Central America, Vietnam, etc. <br /> <br />Murray Rothbard notes in his review how the phases the Russians go through, in countering the film's guerillas, mirror those used by US commanders in Vietnam: <br /> <br />"...first the Russian commander decides to hole up in the cities and military bases, into the "safe zones," whereupon the Wolverines boldly demonstrate that in guerrilla war there are no safe zones, and that the "front is everywhere." At that point, another crackerjack Russian commander takes over, and replicates the "search and destroy" counter-guerrilla response of the Green Berets. This is more punishing, but still does not succeed. " <br /> <br />Now, to defend home and family from invaders, against whatever odds, is inarguably a personality trait common to any human. That said, Americans (even liberal Americans who pretend otherwise) don't really care about guerilla wars in central America or Afghanistan -not even very much when it's Americans who are fighting against guerillas in Afghanistan. So Milius came up with the fascinating(albeit improbable) scenario that is played out in Red Dawn, where the Soviets invade Colorado. <br /> <br /> <br />What, though, about this film has caused liberals to detest it so much -and vice-versa for nationalists? <br /> <br />I believe the reason nationalists/neo conservatives like this film is simple; it is an exciting film which shows Americans bravely defending their home against foreign invaders. Unfortunately, if the American's roles were reversed, they would probably think it was a film about a brave, occupying American force trying to bring democracy to a backwards land. It would simply never occur to these people (who can compare a nightmare like Abu Ghraib to a fraternity prank) that people in other lands can care as much about defending their land from outsiders as Americans would, or that there are countless Iraqi/Afghani teenagers who are living out their own personal Red Dawn at this moment. <br /> <br />As the liberals go; I think that, while they are not necessarily unpatriotic, they are just too self absorbed and fond of being "cool" to be enthusiastic about anything which seems like it might be patriotic. Secondly, liberals dislike guns; more specifically, they dislike guns being portrayed in a positive way. The liberal/collectivist mentality holds that home/self defense is best left to the trained, state sanctioned proffesional -that ordinary people simply cannot be trusted with anything as dangerous as firearms. The former Soviet Union agreed with them. Which brings me to my next point; liberals liked/like the old USSR. Sure, they will condemn Stalin and Mao in a mealy-mouthed, offhand way, but in their hearts they still believe that socialism is a superior social and economic system, which is mearly working it's way through some growing pains. Hence the the hysteria that surrounds this film about it's supposed anti-Soviet message. <br /> <br />But enough about those swine.. How does Red Dawn work as a movie ? <br /> <br />It certainly has it's faults. It's true that the characters remain rather anonymous and underdeveloped throughout the movie. Some of the action sequences are very exaggerated -there are sequences that would hardly seem out of place in an old, silent comedy movie. I find Milius' hyper-macho, "zen facist" mentality to be a little over the top. <br /> <br />Having said all of that, I felt it was a very probable depiction of what it must be like to be a guerilla fighter. Throughout the movie, members of the squad die in grotesque ways, betray each other, flip out mentally, debate the morality of executing enemy soldiers -this is not (entirely) mindless, musclebound movie fodder. Likewise, the film's portrayal of the other side and why they are fighting is anything but one sided. I think this movie very effectivly conveys, to an American audience, what it must be like to be on the recieving end of a foreign invasion. All of this in a fast paced, exciting 80's style action movie, which never had me bored. <br /> <br />A couple of personal reflections: <br /> <br />If I had been able to choose any career, when I was a highschool student filling out career aptitude forms, my top 3 choices would have been: <br /> <br />1) AK 47 toting guerilla freedom fighter <br /> <br />2) AK 47 toting guerilla freedom fighter <br />and <br />3) AK 47 toting guerilla freedom fighter. <br /> <br />Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey do look really good in grubby, army-surplus commando gear. It raises the question, why don't more women don't occasionally toss on a beret or special forces sweater? It was what it was

In the 1980s with American troop and armor strength greatly diminished (before Reagan poured vast amounts of money into the military) the reality of the fall of status quo and surge of communism in the western hemisphere was a distinct reality. On this idea the film capitalizes. Many will chalk this movie up to conservative jingoism due the emphasis on patriotism and liberal use of the second amendment. The question of who would fight to defend their country and the evils of communism are the crux of this movie. The seemingly nameless characters (I had to watch it again to pick up all the names of the main characters) emphasizes the point that these kids could be anyone. <br />Granted the special effects are 80s caliber with bullet holes appearing seconds later, if at all. After all is said and done this DVD asks some compelling questions about the state of America while delivering some excellent bonus features. I would caution, however, that anyone who has not lived under the fear of communism or studied this era in American history with some vigor may not fully appreciate the intended affect of the film or view it in a serious light.Amazon.comThe Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. A Nice Change of Pace

Almost every child goes through a stage where they want nothing more than to be an astronaut when they grow up. For most that stage is short lived, but for some that stage never goes away. It is this idea that is at the heart of director Clint Eastwood's latest film, Space Cowboys, a tale of four aging Air Force pilots who get a second chance to do what they wanted to do most for over forty years, go into space. <br /> <br />Eastwood stars as Frank Corvin, the leader of a former group of test pilots know as Team Daedalus. After making it as close as can possibly be to space without actually being there, the program was disbanded in 1958 in favor of NASA. Upon this occurrence Frank and the other three members of the crew Hawk (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry (Donald Sutherland) and Tank (James Garner) went their own separate ways. Frank went on to become a great early engineer for NASA by designing the guidance system for the Skylab project. The film then fast-forwards to the present, where a serious situation has occurred with a former USSR satellite that is loosing its orbit and will soon crash into earth. You're probably thinking what's the big deal about one Soviet satellite, but that big deal is eventually revealed in one of the film's bigger payoffs. Anyway, the Soviet satellite mysteriously runs on the same guidance system as Skylab, which is so old that no one at NASA can understand it and in one of the film's funnier ongoing jokes, everyone that could once understand it is now dead. Their ultimate solution is to get Frank to fix it. <br /> <br />Frank smells something fishy in all of this and as a result plays out the situation as best he can. So well in fact, that he is able to get NASA top dog Bob Gerson (James Cromwell), the same official who stopped Frank from making it to space in the first place, to allow him and the rest of Team Daedalus to go into space in exchange for his being able to fix the problem. Frank then goes out to gather up Tank, now a minister, Jerry, a roller coaster engineer with a heavy sex drive, and Hawk, a high-risk pilot who hasn't spoken to Frank for years. The crew then goes through the rigorous training that is needed for them to go into space, which provides the film's biggest laughs. The film provides a lot of them, and as you would expect, the vast majority of which surround their age. Unlike most of this summer's other comedies Space Cowboys is able to be funny without being downright cruel, as the film's humor is more of a case of us laughing with the members of the crew than our laughing at them. The members of the crew are old; they know it and are as willing to accept it just as the audience does. <br /> <br />After the training has been completed, a few plot twists here and there, and a few side stories such as the relationships between Frank and Hawk, Frank and Gerson, and Hawk and a NASA official played by Marcia Gay Harden, the launch date finally arrives. Its here were the film sheds its light-heartiness as it takes itself much more seriously while in space. The space scenes are toned down in comparison to those seen as of late in recent space films, but at the same time still amazing nonetheless. The film doesn't go special effects heavy, but instead uses just what is necessary to make it seem so real. This same relative simplicity was also quite noticeable in the film's opening air sequence, which like the space scenes is also very effective in making a big impact despite not going overboard. At the same time, I also had some problems understanding exactly what was going on during the space mission as parts went unexplained while the angles of certain shots also added to the confusion of the action at hand. Also hurting the scene was the situation back in Houston, which didn't help increase tension of the situation. All in all, the space scene was still pretty well done, and certainly a nice change of pace. <br /> <br />Most of the film's performances were all top notch, as one would expect from a cast of this caliber. It's easy to identify with the crew, and just as easy to dislike Cromwell's character. My only complaint in this regard is with Garner's character, who just wasn't given enough screen time to really develop when compared to the other three members of the crew. <br /> <br />After viewing the film I couldn't help but think of the similarities to 1998's Armageddon in terms of plot. I enjoyed parts of that film, but felt that it took itself way to seriously in addition to being much too over the top in multiple aspects throughout. Space Cowboys is almost the complete opposite in this regard as it is very toned down, and with a few exceptions, lacks any real seriousness throughout the first 2/3 of the film. While that was more enjoyable than the corniness of Armageddon, it also hurt the film to a certain extent, as it could have really used a few more serious moments here and there to balance itself a little more and to help build up the tension surrounding its final act. Other than that, and the fact that the film doesn't really bring anything new to the table, Space Cowboys provides a very enjoyable experience by succeeding in almost everything it tries to accomplish. And as many science fiction films before it have proven time and time again, Space Cowboys reiterates the fact that sometimes less is more, especially in space. <br /> <br />*** (7.5/10)B00005ALS240A1JQXTC3M4W3G702005-01-14

Clint Eastwood's Worst Movie

Let me start by saying I have nothing against Clint Eastwood. He is a legend and has made many great films over the course of his career. But this movie is just plain bad. The idea of sending 4 elderly, unexperienced pilots into space to save a Russian satellite is ridiculous in itself. This movie makes a mockery of the space program. Astronauts go through years of training to travel into space and fly the space shuttles. Doing complicated space walks to repair satellites requires even more extensive training. In this film, this training is done in several weeks. Once in space, the shuttle is battered to the extent that it would be incapable of surviving re-entry in real life. At the end, not only does Clint Eastwood re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and lands the shuttle just fine, but he does so without a functioning onboard guidance computer. If you are a fan of NASA, the space program, astronomy, or science in general, you will find this film laughable. This film should be categorized as a "B" movie. Better with Age

Great story line, great gags, great characters, great visual effects. True. But a true gem to see 4 great actors of our time perform together quite possibly for the last time. Americans extend the hand of friendship to the Russians before the breakup of the USSR to repair the "only" communication satelite they have. But things dont go their way when truths begin to unfold some beginning on the ground but the most dramatic ones in orbit. The Ripe Stuff

Maybe this would not have done as well if it had been called "The Ripe Stuff" but I think it would have been a great title for this one. A fun, exciting adventure!

Original Theatrical Release gets 5 stars. <br />The New Extended Release gets 3 stars. <br /> <br />I have a simple plea to film directors. PLEASE STOP TURNING OUT DIRECTOR CUTS when you release older films out on DVD. <br /> <br />Case in point Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves. The original cut was one of my favorite films of all time. I love this movie but now with the additional deleted scenes put back into the film my love for it has dwindle. Through out the original cut of the film there were winks and nods to certain elements in the film like the Sherrif being raised by a witch. The additional scenes that further explains the Sherrif's background turns the movie from an old time action adventure into a campy cartoon. Also there is a scene where a little girl goes to Morgan Freeman, who plays Robin's Moorish companion from the Crusades, and asks why did God paint him. In the original cut Freeman explains with some charm and a smile and the scene cuts away but in this extended edition the holier than thou fryar marches in and confronts Freeman. I do realize the extended scene was to further set up the differences between the two men and religions so to make it more meaningful when the come together to fight tyrany but I have to say in the end the dialogue is forced and it feels a bit like a lecture being acted out. The editor of the original theatrical version of this film was wise to cut that scene short. <br /> <br />True the clarity of the digital transfer is much better than the previous DVD release (which was the theatrical version)and its nice that I don't have to flip the disc over to watch the second half of the movie but it matters little when dealing with the horrible alterations done to this film. <br /> <br />I'm sure this is part of a Warner Bros marketting ploy; continually ruining their film franchises all to make a few extra dollars. Milk the buyer for all its worth. First offer a dvd of the original release that has a lousy video and audio transfer. Second offer a special edition dvd that offers better quality but also a version of the film that is not what audiences fell in love with and then lastly (hopefully) release a dvd that is the original theatrical release, with superior quality, and extras. Well I say forget them. I'm going back to my crappy old dvd. What do you mean Costner's not really from england??!!!?

The Bryan Adams theme track for this film stayed at no.1 in the UK charts for 16 long, dark weeks. A particularly low ebb for this nations collective psyche. <br />Despite this and despite the strong American accents, I actually find it hard to completely loathe this movie. Perhaps it's due to watching it as a rather geeky young lad, when Kevin Costner actually seemed quite cool (- as opposed to the self-important, greasy goat turd I now realise he is). Or maybe it's down to the slow-mo arrow shooting scenes, which must have been a precursor to the whole John Woo white dove phenomena prevalent today. <br />I expect its more likely though that this films success is in a large part down to the performance of Alan Rickman as the Sherrif of Nottingham. My favorite version of this tale

Yes, I know Costner doesn't sound like a Brit. I forgot about that pretty quickly as the story unfolded. The cast is engaging and works well together--particularly Costner with both Morgan Freeman as his faithful sidekick Azeem and all Robin's merry men. <br /> <br />I particularly loved Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham. This is one of his best roles. He's funny, tragic, depraved. <br /> <br />I wish the sound had been redone for the digital release, but otherwise, this film is excellent. You remember when this first started. The Fellowship of The Ring. The Two Towers. Then came the last, and hopefully the best. The Return of the King. Something like magic happened. It became the best of the three as I, and perhaps others, thought. Then it won 11 Academy Awards, a feat only reached by Titanic and Ben-Hur. Heck, everyone I know says it surpasses both of them. I would say i does. It is the best movie i have ever seen and ever will see, and perhaps the best movie i think has been ever made. An epic of the ages. <br /> It starts out with Frodo and Sam and Gollum, trying to get to Gollum's secret way, where an unknown trap is waiting. Also, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Merry, and Pippin go on their own adventures in the greatest battle of the Age, and then to the devastated land of Mordor itself, for the final titanic showdown, of Sauron, the King, the Hobbit, his gardener, and the Ring of Power. Tolkien's masterful and enchanting story has influenced millions. Now this movie with help push it along. Peter Jackson has truly done his best on this movie. The Greatest Epic in film history....

Star Wars has it's time and place...and sadly, it is the 70's and 80's, and in the 90's...the language, dimensions and magic fell flat as it became clear Lucas never grew up while locked in his "castle" over on Skywalker Ranch. Juxtaposed with that fallen star, is Peter Jacskon, a man who takes into his grubby, stubby little hands, that torch, and leaps to far new heights. And, we, the viewer, are led to the final tale that swept the Academy Awards for 11 golden men. The filmworld was silenced and trampled by this masterpiece of modern cinema...the melding of special effects, acting, high drama and powerful storytelling, and that was just to muzzle Michael Moore! ;) <br /> <br />The modern myth...which is why I bring Star Wars into this little online review, because Lucas was a prime example in our late 20th century....was originally delivered far better by Tolkien during the dark days of a world at war and industrialization invading as a Brave New World came clear...and Tolkein wrote, with deep passion and love, a cautinary tale of power, atavism and imperialism railing against the common folk, who must forge old alliances to meet and triumph over the dark forces at work. Tolkein was a deeply relgious man, and his true faith was his trust in the good heart of man, or more aptly, hobbits. And through Hobbits, and their sincere and open humanity, would be the very fulcrum to meet and defeat the forces of evil. <br /> <br />Peter Jackson uses the final film to paint the widest and most colorful brushstrokes of his great triptych. A great premise brought down by a sloppy script.

I liked this movie. Dragons vs. man in a post-apocalyptic world. Throw in a few modern day weapons and it's a fantasy/sci-fi/action movie geeks wet-dream. Reign of Fire does a bunch of things right yet there are a number of puzzling logical inconsistencies that really leave you scratching your head. <br /> <br />The bad - logical errors: 1) In the beginning of the film we learn how dangerous it is to venture into the open, even for a short period of time, during an ill-fated harvesting expedition. A dragon appears almost immediately, torches the crops, and attacks the humans. Yet a short time later Matthew McConaughey appears in a very noisy tank, leading a column of very noisy vehicles, including a very noisy helicopter! Taking into consideration the speed at which the first dragon detected the stealthy group of harvesters, it is a mystery why McConaughey's group wasn't swarming with dragons. 2) McConaughey is a dragon slayer. He and his gang have concocted a complicated and insanely dangerous method of killing dragons. They've kill two hundred dragons so one would think that they would be able to execute their crazy plan flawlessly. They get their chance soon enough but it is such a disaster, highlighting all the obvious flaws in the technique, that it destroys any suspension of disbelief the audience may have been harboring. 3) McConaughey tells Christian Bale that the dragons have great vision during the day and even better vision at night. So what do the small group of survivors, hiding from the vast horde of dragons who have ravaged the earth, do after they manage to kill one dragon among millions? Blast music, dance in the open, and shine spotlights into the air. 4) The biggest flaw in the film is McConaughey's huge leap of logic that leads him to England. There are millions of dragons. He has killed two hundred, all female, and somehow he concludes that there is only one male and it's hanging out in London. Huh? <br /> <br />The good - Performances: Christian Bale is good. Matthew McConaughey is almost unrecognizable as the bald, tough as nails Van Zant, who may not be quite playing with a full deck. It's an over the top performance. It cracked me up. Gerald Butler. He gets all the best comic lines and delivers them flawlessly. It's a grim film, so the humor has the be understated. Butler pulls it off. FX: Not a lot of dragon special effects because of the modest budget, but when the dragons are on the screen they're very impressive. <br /> <br />In the end it's a frustrating film. Total Action Porn

Need a plot? There really is no need for you to watch this film. "Reign of Fire" cashes in on the type of audience that measures film satisfaction in number of explosions per minute and that oh so hip post-apocalyptic feel. <br /> <br />The movie has some great special effects and some interesting camera angles. That's about the best that can be said for it. If one begins watching the film with that sort of thing in mind, there will be no disappointment. The script? Minimal at best. The acting? Feh. Matthew McConaughey is the absolute worst. Horrible. One can't possibly say enough how annoying his character is, and his over-acting makes Mel Gibson's efforts in other films seem subtle and understated by comparison. Christian Bale is just not quite there. <br /> <br />Still, "Reign of Fire" can be a fun film, as long as one expects nothing more than lots of mindless action with little to no point. Strictly for Sci-Fi/Fantasy addicts!

'Reign Of Fire' is probably the first in what is likely to be a number of cash-in attempts on a small trilogy known as 'The Lord Of The Rings'. At first it may not seem like it fits that category - it is set in 2020, and in a world that looks suspiciously post-apocalyptic. But it is what caused that apocalypse that places this movie squarely in the fantasy genre - dragons. In a way it is an interesting movie, a sci-fi dragon movie, and it is a combination that a lot of people just didn't seem to handle on its initial release. Faced with the total fantasy of a dragon, the human characters and story were often pulled to pieces for being unrealistic. Ah, that was a dragon swooping by - exactly where is reality in this movie? <br />What does work, and work incredibly well for 'Reign Of Fire' is the effects. You will believe that dragons exist and are ravaging the world. Some of the effects are jaw-dropping, and this is largely due to the way Bowman, using his years of experience on 'The X-Files', knows to the second and millimetre the exact time and the exact amount to show of his monsters. They are not used too much, but at the same time, they are not hidden right up until the big reveal at the end (which of course usually results in disappointment). Another reason why this is an interesting movie is that it is Bowman's first feature since moving away from 'The X-Files' (for which he directed the movie, and countless episodes), and if this is anything to go by, an extremely capable action director has been found. <br />'Reign Of Fire' was never going to be anything but a B-movie, a genre-film, a monster movie, and in that regard it succeeds well. Utter Rubbish

The true tragedy is that I paid to watch this film in the cinema - what an unbelievable disapointment. Somebody should blacklist the director for actually managing to put people off going to the cinema. This should have been straight to video or maybe even cable. The only people who like this type of purile drivel are non-science fiction fans. I hate it when films are over-hyped to appeal to true genre fans but when you turn up you get a super-thin plot, bad acting, awful CGI, characters you really don't care about and 20 seconds of action. <br /> <br />Remember, just kill the main dragon and all the others will die too. Its simple. I HATE THIS MOVIE

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. I would give it negative stars if I could. It's sad that some people died in a storm and all, but this movie doesn't even make you care for the people who die so it is kindof pointless. It would be like someone making a movie about an idiotic boring person that dies in a car crash in the end. What is the point?? Hollywood Storm

I'd read the book and then saw the poster for the movie, so I was excited about seeing THE PERFECT STORM. <br />But I did wonder how the filmmakers were going to translate the story to the screen. <br /> <br />Studio pictures have to have "star parts" to attract names like George Clooney--but the problem with THE PERFECT STORM was that, by choosing to tell the story through the fishermen on the Andrea Gale, the script would have to create their story: no one knows what happened to them. <br />The book describes them as they head out to sea...and they literally disappear into the storm. No one survived. No one will ever know what happened. (And you learn this in the very first paragraph of the book). <br />So, basically, you're seeing made-up scenes of in-fighting and struggles culled from other fishing stories. That bothered me when I first saw the film, because the bickering and scuffling between the Andrea Gale crew felt forced and unreal. <br /> <br />Read the book. This movie was great movie in many meanings.

This movie, Perfect Storm was great movie in many meanings. The opportunity that I was interested to this movie at first was for that the main theme was weather phenomenon. I have known that incredible storms, their three storms touched each other, broke a few years ago, but I have not known about the detail things. I have the knowledge about weather to some extent because I am interested to weather phenomenon daily. For that, the movie that showed the rare phenomenon that theree storms including hurricane and cold front line etc contacted each other gave shock to me. <br />In addition to that, the movie expressed such unbelievable theme very well. I think that it is natural that the makers use the artficial technique like computer graphics and so on. But because the movie theme was nature, using the technique must have needed many care. But in such rimitation, the great expression was made, for instance wave is so. The makers made high wave that we can never see in our life. The wave was very natural. The thirilling case even that a fishing ship dived into wave wall was expressed with incredible excitment very well. <br /> <br />And except of their weather, there was climaxs in the movie. That was human drama. The main vhicle in the movie was a fishing ship. And the crew were wild and impoliteness in my first glance. But as the story went, my emotion for their changed little and little, that is to say, though they were a little crazy men who did the actions like diving to such storms, when I say in other view, they had bravery that they dared to go the storms without turning back, that was pure benefit that they derired to get back fishes to the hometown. Such bravery can be said to my daily life. As I am adult, tend to lose bravery and be timid, I felt that I should go to dangerouse scene even for achiving my goal in the movie. <br /> <br />Finally, they had been drunk by wave. I expected that the last would be happy end even if whether the movie was on non-fiction or not. Well told story

First of all others on this sight don't know what they are talking about to say it is such a bad movie. Someone said they were fishermen from Maine. They are from Massachussets. Also for people who didn't understand the idea of the job youu would have to love fishing to understand it. I thought the movie was portayed very well with awesome effects. The cast was well chosen.
