Great story, beautiful animation, but not much else there

As I implied in my title, Iria - Zeiram has a great plot and good animation, however the action scenes, which were many, weren't all that good, especially considering the animation media. This isn't an Akira, but it isn't a Metropolis, either, there is enough excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat, but it isn't all that exciting, unlike the superb action scenes in Akira. <br /> <br />I don't know if this is the same DVD set I have, but if it is, here is a warning. This appears to have been done as a six part series, made for TV. Each episode had opening credits, closing credits, and a preview of the next episode. This works fine if you're going to be spreading your show over a number of weeks in a TV format, but the DVD I have decided to leave everything in. This means that you have to pick up the remote every 25 min or so and skip ahead past the pointless repetative credits and previews. <br /> <br />The movie concerns the adventures of young Iria, the apprentice bounty hunter, who follows her brother, Gren, on a mission to save the passangers and cargo of a space freighter taken hostage. When they arrive on the ship, they find that the hostage taker is, in fact, the cargo, an alien monster called Zeiram. There are many stories surrounding Zeiram, most describing him as an unkillable butcher. Hungering for Some Action?

I could be mistaken, but I think I've found the holy grail of anime sci-fi action. But what makes for a good sci-fi action show? In my experience, it a combination of a likable character, excellent fight choreography, a sweet soundtrack, cool weapons and gadgets, atmosphere, and action, action, action. <br /> <br />First of all, this OVA has some of the slickest presentation I've ever seen in an anime. The opening, the closing, the music, the way the shots are composed...10 out of 10. The animation and artwork are also absolutely top-notch. Looking at the backgrounds in this show made me think of some of the awesome concept art we sometimes see in the opening or closing of a show but almost never in the actual show. How to describe the style? It's a bit like the very best art in Outlaw Star, but kicked up a notch. Everything has a kind of oriental/Star Wars Episode IV style to it (from people wearing old battle armor with cloaks over them to cities and transportation that looks like it's made of stuff found in a futuristic junk-yard). <br /> <br />As far as characters go, the main one in this show is mighty cool. Iria wears ceramic-looking body armor, carries a cool looking gun, and has more gadgets for fighting than you can shake a light-saber at. Of course if you are into sci-fi gadgetry there are also the speeder-type transports that can jump into hyper-space, personal energy shields, and the holographic fighting simulators (and we're just getting started). Cool stuff. <br /> <br />The fights in this show are great. Some people might get tired of seeing our hero fight the same villain for hours, but personally I loved it. The fights just get more and more intense, as the horrible creature called Zeiram simply refuses to die. During her fights with the monster, Iria will do all kinds of martial-arts moves, fire weapons until they run out of ammo and grab another one only to keep blasting, dodging, running, and doing all kinds acrobatics. Very slick. <br /> <br />Of course Iria herself is also an extremely likable person, and as we slowly learn more and more about her and how she came to be a hunter we come to care about her more and more. Iria may be tough-as-nails, and cool-as-ice, but in the end she's still a girl with a little bit of growing up to do, and she's not out to prove anything or hurt anyone, just to destroy the monster that threatens to kill everyone it comes close to. Iria is now officially one of my favorite anime heroes. <br /> <br />Really, the pacing of this anime is fantastic. It starts out at fast, and the tension just keeps building until by the end of the final episode we just know that either Iria or the monster is going to die. One Of The Defining Anime - Art & Entertainment

At some time in the future a young woman named Iria and her brother Glen, both bounty hunters, join in an contract to rescue the passengers from the crash of a space transport. This mission takes a turn for the worse when the rescue team find themselves face to face with an indestructible killer - Zeiram. The result is disastrous; one team member killed, and Iria is forced to leave her brother behind to fight the monster. For the rest of the episodes Iria dedicates herself to solving the mystery of the Zeiram and saving her brother.<p>Several things set this 1995 OVA series apart from female (or male, for that matter) heroic anime. While the primary plot isn't entirely original the characters are notable and are allowed to develop well-crafted personalities. Iria is young, intelligent, and fiercely capable - a completely independent woman. Fujikuro is more than a little crooked, but, despite his antics, loyal to Iria. Bob - a bounty hunter turned into a computer ghost. And Kei, who is a younger reflection of Iria. All of these characters and others leave lasting impressions as the result of the find scripting and conceptual work of Keita Amemiya.<p>The artwork remains outstanding even by today's standards. The series is based on an original live action film, but animation can go where file can only follow at great cost. Character design (Masakazu Katsura) and set design (Amemiya, et. al.) combine to provide a fresh looking universe that combines traditional Japanese and Chinese elements with fantasy visions that rival Yoshitaka Amano, peopled with contraptions that Da Vinci would have envied.<p>The set includes an additional DVD with graphics and interviews with Amemiya, Katsura and several of the voice actors. If you are lucky enough to find the limited edition you will also get a metal container for the set. The one that started it all...

To tell you the truth, this was not only the very first anime I owned, it was also the first one I saw. The story, the action, the characters and designs, all gloriously original. Anime about bounty hunters are nothing new, but Iria : The Zeiram Animation brought its own original twist to the sub genre. It is somewhat disappointing to only have six episodes, but once you own a few OVA's, it's more than enough. I bought the VHS back before DVD's were even around. The only reason that I hesitate to give it five stars is the English language track. It is littered with odd sounding phrases and seems to be poorly translated altogether. The voice acting is excellent, but marred by the odd translation. All in all, I highly suggest purchasing it. A wicked pleasure!

I don't know exactly what it is about South Park that renders me near sick with laughter but I have managed to extract three consistant themes. <br /> First of all, in a world of over concern about languauge and address, PC analysis and anxiety; anything, anyone and any topic is fair game for a right royal ripping apart here. <br /> Secondly, there is something about the intoxicating regression at finding vulgar, sick humour so deliciously addictive, just like these very naughty boys do (and if we are honest, just as we did in childhood). <br /> Finally, the fact that the main characters manage to be at once, cute, sweet and adorable while being utterly obnoxious and twisted. <br /> It's schoolroom toilet, naughtily sick humour and it's addictive because we soooo should not like it. <br /> I recommend this film but cannot honestly say I have seen it in it's entirity as I never get through it without missing large portions of it and needing oxygen/hysteria breaks, frequently!.630562740151A3UN6WX5RRO2AG12005-02-26

The funniest damn thing I ever saw

This is the ultimite testment against censorship that I have ever seen. This is based on the series South Park by Matt Parker and Trey Stone. They write it, direct it, and even voice it. Stan,Kyle,Kenny,and Cartman go see the Terrance and Phillip movie Asses of Fire, and it warps their little minds to the point where whatever they say has cuss words. The parents are upset, They gather the kids and ask them where they heard those words and they say the movie. They are outraged that the Canadians made that movie and they put the kids in Group cussing therapy, and they seem changed but they go back into the movie and start cussing again, and they copy something from the movie that kills Kenny(You Bastards!). The moms are furious, they blame Canda and declare war on them and take Terrance and Philip hostage and plan to kill them so they can end it. But, they don't know that Satan plans to take over the world if they kill Terrance and Philip. so The kids form La Resistance and try and save Terrance and Philip, and they don't. The movie ends with cussing by Cartman, which was the funniest thing ever. <br /> <br />The movie was simply put, HILAROUS, and Brillant. Matt and Trey speak out against censorship and do it in a very funny fashion. They also know how to take it overboard but they stay on the border, and just get belly laughs from you. This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. It is so good. The voice acting is hilarous. Great story, beautiful animation, but not much else there

As I implied in my title, Iria - Zeiram has a great plot and good animation, however the action scenes, which were many, weren't all that good, especially considering the animation media. This isn't an Akira, but it isn't a Metropolis, either, there is enough excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat, but it isn't all that exciting, unlike the superb action scenes in Akira. <br /> <br />I don't know if this is the same DVD set I have, but if it is, here is a warning. This appears to have been done as a six part series, made for TV. Each episode had opening credits, closing credits, and a preview of the next episode. This works fine if you're going to be spreading your show over a number of weeks in a TV format, but the DVD I have decided to leave everything in. This means that you have to pick up the remote every 25 min or so and skip ahead past the pointless repetative credits and previews. <br /> <br />The movie concerns the adventures of young Iria, the apprentice bounty hunter, who follows her brother, Gren, on a mission to save the passangers and cargo of a space freighter taken hostage. When they arrive on the ship, they find that the hostage taker is, in fact, the cargo, an alien monster called Zeiram. There are many stories surrounding Zeiram, most describing him as an unkillable butcher. Hungering for Some Action?

I could be mistaken, but I think I've found the holy grail of anime sci-fi action. But what makes for a good sci-fi action show? In my experience, it a combination of a likable character, excellent fight choreography, a sweet soundtrack, cool weapons and gadgets, atmosphere, and action, action, action. <br /> <br />First of all, this OVA has some of the slickest presentation I've ever seen in an anime. The opening, the closing, the music, the way the shots are composed...10 out of 10. The animation and artwork are also absolutely top-notch. Looking at the backgrounds in this show made me think of some of the awesome concept art we sometimes see in the opening or closing of a show but almost never in the actual show. How to describe the style? It's a bit like the very best art in Outlaw Star, but kicked up a notch. Everything has a kind of oriental/Star Wars Episode IV style to it (from people wearing old battle armor with cloaks over them to cities and transportation that looks like it's made of stuff found in a futuristic junk-yard). <br /> <br />As far as characters go, the main one in this show is mighty cool. Iria wears ceramic-looking body armor, carries a cool looking gun, and has more gadgets for fighting than you can shake a light-saber at. Of course if you are into sci-fi gadgetry there are also the speeder-type transports that can jump into hyper-space, personal energy shields, and the holographic fighting simulators (and we're just getting started). Cool stuff. <br /> <br />The fights in this show are great. Some people might get tired of seeing our hero fight the same villain for hours, but personally I loved it. The fights just get more and more intense, as the horrible creature called Zeiram simply refuses to die. During her fights with the monster, Iria will do all kinds of martial-arts moves, fire weapons until they run out of ammo and grab another one only to keep blasting, dodging, running, and doing all kinds acrobatics. Very slick. <br /> <br />Of course Iria herself is also an extremely likable person, and as we slowly learn more and more about her and how she came to be a hunter we come to care about her more and more. Iria may be tough-as-nails, and cool-as-ice, but in the end she's still a girl with a little bit of growing up to do, and she's not out to prove anything or hurt anyone, just to destroy the monster that threatens to kill everyone it comes close to. Iria is now officially one of my favorite anime heroes. <br /> <br />Really, the pacing of this anime is fantastic. It starts out at fast, and the tension just keeps building until by the end of the final episode we just know that either Iria or the monster is going to die. One Of The Defining Anime - Art & Entertainment

At some time in the future a young woman named Iria and her brother Glen, both bounty hunters, join in an contract to rescue the passengers from the crash of a space transport. This mission takes a turn for the worse when the rescue team find themselves face to face with an indestructible killer - Zeiram. The result is disastrous; one team member killed, and Iria is forced to leave her brother behind to fight the monster. For the rest of the episodes Iria dedicates herself to solving the mystery of the Zeiram and saving her brother.<p>Several things set this 1995 OVA series apart from female (or male, for that matter) heroic anime. While the primary plot isn't entirely original the characters are notable and are allowed to develop well-crafted personalities. Iria is young, intelligent, and fiercely capable - a completely independent woman. Fujikuro is more than a little crooked, but, despite his antics, loyal to Iria. Bob - a bounty hunter turned into a computer ghost. And Kei, who is a younger reflection of Iria. All of these characters and others leave lasting impressions as the result of the find scripting and conceptual work of Keita Amemiya.<p>The artwork remains outstanding even by today's standards. The series is based on an original live action film, but animation can go where file can only follow at great cost. Character design (Masakazu Katsura) and set design (Amemiya, et. al.) combine to provide a fresh looking universe that combines traditional Japanese and Chinese elements with fantasy visions that rival Yoshitaka Amano, peopled with contraptions that Da Vinci would have envied.<p>The set includes an additional DVD with graphics and interviews with Amemiya, Katsura and several of the voice actors. If you are lucky enough to find the limited edition you will also get a metal container for the set. The one that started it all...

To tell you the truth, this was not only the very first anime I owned, it was also the first one I saw. The story, the action, the characters and designs, all gloriously original. Anime about bounty hunters are nothing new, but Iria : The Zeiram Animation brought its own original twist to the sub genre. It is somewhat disappointing to only have six episodes, but once you own a few OVA's, it's more than enough. I bought the VHS back before DVD's were even around. The only reason that I hesitate to give it five stars is the English language track. It is littered with odd sounding phrases and seems to be poorly translated altogether. The voice acting is excellent, but marred by the odd translation. All in all, I highly suggest purchasing it. The funniest damn thing I ever saw

This is the ultimite testment against censorship that I have ever seen. This is based on the series South Park by Matt Parker and Trey Stone. They write it, direct it, and even voice it. Stan,Kyle,Kenny,and Cartman go see the Terrance and Phillip movie Asses of Fire, and it warps their little minds to the point where whatever they say has cuss words. The parents are upset, They gather the kids and ask them where they heard those words and they say the movie. They are outraged that the Canadians made that movie and they put the kids in Group cussing therapy, and they seem changed but they go back into the movie and start cussing again, and they copy something from the movie that kills Kenny(You Bastards!). The moms are furious, they blame Canda and declare war on them and take Terrance and Philip hostage and plan to kill them so they can end it. But, they don't know that Satan plans to take over the world if they kill Terrance and Philip. so The kids form La Resistance and try and save Terrance and Philip, and they don't. The movie ends with cussing by Cartman, which was the funniest thing ever. <br /> <br />The movie was simply put, HILAROUS, and Brillant. Matt and Trey speak out against censorship and do it in a very funny fashion. They also know how to take it overboard but they stay on the border, and just get belly laughs from you. This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. It is so good. The voice acting is hilarous. Despite its colorful (if crude) animation, <I>South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut</I> is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It's rife with scatological humor, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness, and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross <i>meisters</i> Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada," blaming their neighbors to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world. <p> To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful antiprofanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMMKay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There," Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> to <I>Les Mis&eacute;rables</I>. Great story, beautiful animation, but not much else there

As I implied in my title, Iria - Zeiram has a great plot and good animation, however the action scenes, which were many, weren't all that good, especially considering the animation media. This isn't an Akira, but it isn't a Metropolis, either, there is enough excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat, but it isn't all that exciting, unlike the superb action scenes in Akira. <br /> <br />I don't know if this is the same DVD set I have, but if it is, here is a warning. This appears to have been done as a six part series, made for TV. Each episode had opening credits, closing credits, and a preview of the next episode. This works fine if you're going to be spreading your show over a number of weeks in a TV format, but the DVD I have decided to leave everything in. This means that you have to pick up the remote every 25 min or so and skip ahead past the pointless repetative credits and previews. <br /> <br />The movie concerns the adventures of young Iria, the apprentice bounty hunter, who follows her brother, Gren, on a mission to save the passangers and cargo of a space freighter taken hostage. When they arrive on the ship, they find that the hostage taker is, in fact, the cargo, an alien monster called Zeiram. There are many stories surrounding Zeiram, most describing him as an unkillable butcher. Hungering for Some Action?

I could be mistaken, but I think I've found the holy grail of anime sci-fi action. But what makes for a good sci-fi action show? In my experience, it a combination of a likable character, excellent fight choreography, a sweet soundtrack, cool weapons and gadgets, atmosphere, and action, action, action. <br /> <br />First of all, this OVA has some of the slickest presentation I've ever seen in an anime. The opening, the closing, the music, the way the shots are composed...10 out of 10. The animation and artwork are also absolutely top-notch. Looking at the backgrounds in this show made me think of some of the awesome concept art we sometimes see in the opening or closing of a show but almost never in the actual show. How to describe the style? It's a bit like the very best art in Outlaw Star, but kicked up a notch. Everything has a kind of oriental/Star Wars Episode IV style to it (from people wearing old battle armor with cloaks over them to cities and transportation that looks like it's made of stuff found in a futuristic junk-yard). <br /> <br />As far as characters go, the main one in this show is mighty cool. Iria wears ceramic-looking body armor, carries a cool looking gun, and has more gadgets for fighting than you can shake a light-saber at. Of course if you are into sci-fi gadgetry there are also the speeder-type transports that can jump into hyper-space, personal energy shields, and the holographic fighting simulators (and we're just getting started). Cool stuff. <br /> <br />The fights in this show are great. Some people might get tired of seeing our hero fight the same villain for hours, but personally I loved it. The fights just get more and more intense, as the horrible creature called Zeiram simply refuses to die. During her fights with the monster, Iria will do all kinds of martial-arts moves, fire weapons until they run out of ammo and grab another one only to keep blasting, dodging, running, and doing all kinds acrobatics. Very slick. <br /> <br />Of course Iria herself is also an extremely likable person, and as we slowly learn more and more about her and how she came to be a hunter we come to care about her more and more. Iria may be tough-as-nails, and cool-as-ice, but in the end she's still a girl with a little bit of growing up to do, and she's not out to prove anything or hurt anyone, just to destroy the monster that threatens to kill everyone it comes close to. Iria is now officially one of my favorite anime heroes. <br /> <br />Really, the pacing of this anime is fantastic. It starts out at fast, and the tension just keeps building until by the end of the final episode we just know that either Iria or the monster is going to die. At some time in the future a young woman named Iria and her brother Glen, both bounty hunters, join in an contract to rescue the passengers from the crash of a space transport. This mission takes a turn for the worse when the rescue team find themselves face to face with an indestructible killer - Zeiram. The result is disastrous; one team member killed, and Iria is forced to leave her brother behind to fight the monster. For the rest of the episodes Iria dedicates herself to solving the mystery of the Zeiram and saving her brother.<p>Several things set this 1995 OVA series apart from female (or male, for that matter) heroic anime. While the primary plot isn't entirely original the characters are notable and are allowed to develop well-crafted personalities. Iria is young, intelligent, and fiercely capable - a completely independent woman. Fujikuro is more than a little crooked, but, despite his antics, loyal to Iria. Bob - a bounty hunter turned into a computer ghost. And Kei, who is a younger reflection of Iria. All of these characters and others leave lasting impressions as the result of the find scripting and conceptual work of Keita Amemiya.<p>The artwork remains outstanding even by today's standards. The series is based on an original live action film, but animation can go where file can only follow at great cost. Character design (Masakazu Katsura) and set design (Amemiya, et. al.) combine to provide a fresh looking universe that combines traditional Japanese and Chinese elements with fantasy visions that rival Yoshitaka Amano, peopled with contraptions that Da Vinci would have envied.<p>The set includes an additional DVD with graphics and interviews with Amemiya, Katsura and several of the voice actors. If you are lucky enough to find the limited edition you will also get a metal container for the set. The one that started it all...

To tell you the truth, this was not only the very first anime I owned, it was also the first one I saw. The story, the action, the characters and designs, all gloriously original. Anime about bounty hunters are nothing new, but Iria : The Zeiram Animation brought its own original twist to the sub genre. It is somewhat disappointing to only have six episodes, but once you own a few OVA's, it's more than enough. I bought the VHS back before DVD's were even around. The only reason that I hesitate to give it five stars is the English language track. It is littered with odd sounding phrases and seems to be poorly translated altogether. The voice acting is excellent, but marred by the odd translation. All in all, I highly suggest purchasing it.
