Scariest ive seen since Seven

I dont know what these other reviewers have been smoking??? This movie is so worth seeing and even owning. I admit I do own very few movies only because most I only watch once, but this one I will definatly watch over and over. The acting wasnt fantastic, but it kept you interested and was well done with the material, and the plot twists were awsome. I was on the edge of my seat through at least 90 percent of the movie. Finally the ending....WOW!!! The ending is DEFINATLY one you will NEVER guess. I was blown away!!! Gripping but gory thriller/horror film

"Saw" is a creepy low budget film with high wattage actors. It promises to deliver tense moments and it does. Several reviewers have stated that it puts up one too many red herrings and, you know, maybe that's true, but frankly I love that stuff - I eat up Agatha Christy-type story lines. And this is somewhat in that vein - just extremely gory. <br /> <br />A couple of guys who don't know each other wake up in a disgusting bathroom (I think it's the one that Ewan McGregor went toilet diving in Trainspotting...)chained to the walls. The corpse of someone who blew his own brains out lies between them. They can't free themselves unless one or both of them can saw off his leg using a saw provided by their tormentor (yes, they try it on the chains first to no avail). Provided with piecemeal clues, the men try to devise a way out of their prison, only to find that if they don't do exactly as their tormentor has stated one of the man's family will be murdered. <br /> <br />The cast includes Cary Elwes (Princess Bride and Twister), Danny Glover (do you really need help here?), Monica Potter, and a few unknowns (one of whom wrote the story). <br /> <br />The acting is well above par for such a film. The film is sufficiently claustrophobic when it needs to be and expands outside to give us a bit of breathing room only to reel us back in for more. <br /> <br />If you have a stomach for some gore and a few really good thrills, check this film out.B0006SSOHC10AE8LL9S715YTE02005-03-18

Boring

I did not like this film. It might have had a great concept, looked good via story boards, but the end result was just. boring. How do I know it was boring? It was so boring that I fast forward the DVD scenes for a good twenty or so minutes jumping to the end. We all know the movie, I am sure. Two chaps wake up chained in a bathroom. Sounds like something from Married with Children eh? But not this, some psycho (like there is not one hanging around every corner these days?) did this two them and they have to "piece" (excuse the pun) the clues together to solve the mystery. <br /> <br />The movie tried too hard to have psychological horror and gore horror. The psychological horror seemed, at least to me, as if it was trying too hard to be suspenseful and terrorizing to the mind. Solid clues and hit and miss clues just didn't go over well with me. It seemed to me as if the direct was trying to throw all the old and new cliches together (i.e. Hitchcock meets SEVEN meets X-Files meets CSI and on and on and on). In this case, the charming psycho (who we think we see but ahh the ending the ending) kidnaps lads and lasses who are having a poorly lived life from their own making and puts them through a psychological horror test to see if they regain the appreciation for living. For example, the torture of a young lady who takes drugs, well she will get a bit of a headache if she doesn't learn to appreciate her life. This headache will be a everlasting one due to the fact that if she fails this test, her head explodes. Charming? <br /> <br />Then there was the gore. We all know there is going to be gore in a movie called Saw (as if you would be thinking this movie is aimed toward helping you with wood working techniques). Now it wasn't the kind of gore you would see in, say, Freddy vs. Jason or Seven. The film writer and director tried to have the gore too sinister. The film tried too hard with this department too. An example of on of the gore scenes that was a bit subdued but still a bit to the ol' stomach is when some fellow who has a bad life has to find his way through a maze of razor wires due to the fact he tried to commit suicide (not the best way to help people with mental handicaps if you ask me). If he makes it, he lives, he doesn't. So he is cut to shreds. Even better we are hit repeatedly by the images of gore. Again. and again. and again. I think we get the point here, at least I did. <br /> <br />I dont know. I am sure many of you like this film, and I am sure it has some good qualities. But for me, someone who's seen many a film come and go, eh, I just would rather read a book and go to bed then watch this snooze of a movie. Maybe though. Maybe what bothers me the most is that, taking into account the psychological horror and the gore, we are suppose to ... in some sick way ... say that what the psycho killer is doing is good. Like with the girl who takes drugs. She "regains" her humanity or something to that effect. Are we suppose to say that this sort of treatment is good? I dont know. Not bad

It was pretty good. I would consider it more of a gory thriller, rather than horror. Nevertheless, an entertaining movie, definitely worth the watch. But, as with most u.s./canada releases, this was not the 'real' movie you want to watch. Unfortunately, the original had to be edited so it could go down from nc-17 to R rating...yes, it was originally that gory. None of us in the u.s. got to see the original uncut version, and even worse, its not even available on dvd....stateside!! Luckily, our mates in the uk DID get to see the uncut version in their theatres, and its also available on dvd (region 2, PAL). I'm a huge fan of zombies, a huge fan of horror-comedies, but this one just lacked zest in too many places. Boring spots here and there, slow pace, and it takes forever to get going. British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a big, big miss. Yes, I "get" British humor (or humour) and black comedy. Yes, I get understatement, too. And yes, perpetual slacker salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his arrested-development roomie Ed (Nick Frost) are pretty funny in and of themselves. And as a little parody of the Romero "Night of the Living Dead" flicks, the film had a lot of potential. And I loved the scenes where the whole world is dissolving and Shaun is so tuned out, he's clueless. And I liked Ed being such a simpleton that his whole idea of anything to do, even to escape ravening zombies, is to go to the Winchester, his favorite (favourite) pub. In places, I was in stitches. <br /> <br />That said, the film got bogged down and boring in way too many places. The cheap production values didn't hurt, but spotty scriptwriting and endless scenes about how annoying the girlfriend's pseudo-intellectual roommates did. <br /> <br />Maybe someone could loan this one to you and you could watch it for a chuckle. A zombie apocalypse as the path to personal growth

You're twenty-something, at the crossroad in your life, maybe you hate your job or your relationship is in trouble...we've all been there. But things don't really get grim until you throw the end of the world into the mix. Which is exactly what happens to the eponymous Shaun of "Shaun of the Dead". Every day is the same and his life is going nowhere, which is precisely what has gotten him dumped. His college era friendships are looking a little long on the tooth, and he has no career to speak of. Fortunately, a zombie plague is giving him the opportunity to show his true mettle. <br /> <br />What is perhaps most engaging about this film is that while it is a parody, with numerous flat out hilarious moments, it is also offers up some genuine thrills, a bit of romance and a surprisingly realistic portrayal of the strains and emotion of an end of the world type scenario. The film begins simply enough with Shaun reeling through life, largely detached from the surrounding world. Until one day his routine falls rather alarmingly apart when the urban zombies he encounters turn out to be actual zombies. <br /> <br />As Shaun and his ne'er do well pal Ed set out to rescue his mother and his girlfriend the directors do a nice job of whipsawing from parody to drama to horror and back again. While "Shaun of the Dead" is first and foremost a comedy, it offers some surprisingly poignant moments, including Shaun's reconciliation with his badly mauled stepfather. Of course, it offers the best fight sequence set to Queen since "Highlander"; although this one doesn't involve swords, so don't take things to seriously. <br /> <br />What lends to the comedy, and also to the interesting dynamic, is that the cast is made up exclusively of normal people. No cops, not even any security guards; no one with martial arts training, etc. When Shaun's band finally gets their hands on a gun, none of them can hit a thing with it. Moreover, they fight and backbite, and while Shaun does rise to the occasion, he is far from infallible. <br /> <br />The most interesting aspect of these relationships is that between Shaun and his recently ex-girlfriend Liz. She dumps him because he was doing nothing with his life, but now that he's making a go of it, the circumstances hardly seem right. The directors insert their give and take in to the flow of the action perfectly; their interaction is never out of context or over the top. A such, it has more in common with old time Hollywood romances that it does with the over the top grope-fests one expects today, and the result is a certain sweetness that nicely offsets the rather grim setting. <br /> <br />Offering laugh out loud moments, a few nice chills and some really interesting social commentary, "Shaun of the Dead" was a surprisingly complex movie. While it nicely lampoons just about every zombie film you've ever seen, it is hardly derivative. Those who enjoyed Max Brooks' book "The Zombie Survival Guide" will particularly appreciate the film as much of the comedy is the subtle, tongue in cheek satire the British do so well. As good as a prequel can be...

I was wary about this movie not being very good because of all the negative hype, but as a horror fan and a fan of the original movie, I was pleasantly surprised. I agree... I think hardcore fans read too much into the original movie and if the prequel is one iota off they gasp in horror (pun intended). Here's what I think... I think it was done quite well. I couldn't expect more from a prequel. Why? Because if you really think about it, when evil comes back for the original movie, it's a much more intense affair. And you can't expect a prequel to be as intense. So, in my opinion it makes sense that the second movie would be more in-depth than the first. I think the director found a delicate balance that may not have otherwise been achieved. Take into consideration the actors, the excellent set and special effects. The movie is top-notch from that standpoint. I think people think just because this movie franchise achieved cult status that everything has to be perfect. Not really new, but still good

This movie is much of the same stuff as in the original Exorcist. Someone is possessed, the person looks just about the same as the one in the Exorcist, and some freaky stuff happens. The bed shakes, there's blood, nasty language, etc. Since it is the prequel to the Exorcist, I guess it makes sense to have similar stuff. It all looks pretty realistic and the movie is interesting. & I thought the Star Wars Prequels Were Great!!!

It's hard to get me but I love to be scared.

OK first of all, if you are not into horror don't rate the movie. With that said this is the first movie in a long time to horrify me. My partner and I had our hands over our eyes when the Hyena's (not wolves) attacked. Yes the movie steals from the original but it has to, it's a prequel. Yes they used a lot of common misdirection but how many otherways are there to do it. I have to admit I was too busy cringing to worry about who was really behind it. If this movie did not scare you a little bit you must really be desensitized (is that correct?) I watch a lot of horror and I usually laugh through most of them but this one scared me bad dreams and all. They did a decent job on a played out story line. Cut these guys some slack. Of course we love to pick on things but if you look too hard you won't enjoy anything, you be too busy picking it apart and showing the flaws to everything. I would say rent it 1st. A Decent, Competent Complement to the Original!

The first time I viewed this, I was NOT well for the frights. <br />Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! <br /> <br />The second time I viewed it, I was still not ready for some of the horror. But I liked the movie even better. <br /> <br />After my third viewing I am confident in my assessment that while this is by no means a masterpiece, I was most surprised at the caliber of the production, the top notch cast, (most notably, Stellan Skarsgård, the actor playing the young Father Merrin), and the fact that the story of the incident alluded to in the original is not as cheesy as some viewers would have you believe. Moreover, when one considers the sequels to the original, this prequel, in comparison, is indeed a worthy complement. <br /> <br />To be sure, some of the horror, blood, gore, can be most disturbing. An horrifically fun fest of musical kicks!

I had to re write this first sentence because I was going to start this review by saying this is one of my few guilty(movie)pleasures. <br />But I can't honestly say I can feel guilty in any way about this film.It is such a fantastic send up and musical romp of the horror/sci fi film genre done in such a unique manner that I'm into it from beginning to end without a second thought. <br />Now this is a film I believe that to really experience it you should have seen it at least once at a movie theatre.There you would not only come to understand why it is such a cult phenom but it would enchance your viewing of it in your own home.I have seen it many,many times "live" and I always find myself referencing that when I watch it now at home. <br />However I have watched this movie in home with people who had only heard of the film but never had had the opportunity to see it "live".Some have liked it but the general concensus is one of either "huh?" or "I don't get it".The sexual references in the film coupled with the suggestive dress seems to be an off-putting factor that with proper pre theatre exposure would I think in most cases allay their feelings quite a bit. <br />This review is probably going to be read more by those who are already RHPS converts so this is probably the one review I will ever write that will be preaching,more than any other,to the "choir". <br />However if you are a RHPS virgin,I would recommend you see this film "live" first,if at all possible.If you can't, just view it with an open mind and sit back and let IT do the walking and talking.You are in for a totally unique viewing experience unlike any other you will have.The plot is see through to be sure but let the characters and especially the music just wash over you and go with the wonderful flow. <br />Richard O'Brien masterminded this beauty which has been translated not only onto film but to wildly successful stage productions as well.I find it hasn't aged a bit and the hard driving soundtrack is a sure fire winner all the way.B00006D29550A3EP2O1NK36X1U02005-03-12

Original and very entertaining.

Lots of people love this movie for the whole participation aspect of it. But to be perfectly honest I find that kind of annoying. I don't think people appreciate exactly how brilliant this movie is. I think it should have been at least nominated for best picture that year. The songs are very well written and catchy. The musical arrangements are very organic and seventies. And the comedy is wonderfully deadpan. And in the end the movie doesn't try to teach a lesson or wrap things up in a neat accessible package but rather kind of leaves you in cold. To this day there's something sinister, awkward, and vaguely repulsive about seeing Tim Curry in drag as Dr. Frank. Brad and Janet, Republican squares, end up at the castle home of the afore mentioned doctor on the night he breaths life into his male blonde Adonis creation, Rocky. Gender bending and partner swapping ensue throughout the night as Brad and Janet endure sexual awakenings neither planned on nor felt they wanted. The rest of the denizens of the castle complete the cast, especially the erstwhile sibling help, Magenta and Riff Raff. Meatloaf entertains as Eddy, the psychotic Elvis inspired biker. Frank N. A wonderfully fun movie!!

The set is weak but performance of the actors and actresses is absolutely genius. Tim Curry and the others carry this film from sheer acting ability that was once the norm and is not found in but few movies today, so the props are of little interest. I will warn any new viewer that the music and theme are acquired tastes that grow on the viewer....so take a walk on the wild side and buy this movie and have fun!! Clever re-telling of an early American classic

Tim Burton films are delightfully witty and creative. They are visually stunning and the wild twists of plot are very entertaining. He also pushes his actors into "over the top" performances, and Johnny Depp is totally over the top in this film. <br /> <br />There is a certain charm to this tale even if there is one decapitation after another. I lost count of all the heads rolling around after about 20. <br /> <br />Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Craine, a young man wrestling with his internal demons and memories while trying to solve a mystery with a real monster. Ichabod's mother, a nature lover or deist, is tortured and killed by his fundamentalist Christian father to save her soul. This small commentary on the dangers of Christian fundamentalism I found interesting as a sub-plot for the film. <br /> <br />Another aspect of Burton is that he does not sentamentalize children, in fact he lets them get killed just like the adults. The scene where the headless horseman decapitates the mid-wife and her husband while their child is hidden in the basement is pretty grim. The average director would have the child peek throught the floor boards and watch his parents die but the child would escape to tell the tale. Not Burton! He has the horseman also find and kill the hiding child along with the parents. Strong stuff! <br /> <br />The visual effects were creepy, the plot offered a suspenseful tale of mystery and murder, and I felt entertained from beginning to end. Stunning Visuals, though flawed in other ways

Alright, in case you didn't notice, this film really doesn't have much of anything to do with that Irving story, which is fine, cause that story sucks. In the film, Ichabod Crane is a constable, who is sent to Sleepy Hollow in order to investigate a series of decapitation murders, which were supposedly committed by the headless horsemen. So basically, this is just a serial killer movie, except it takes place in 1799, and it's got a lot of Tim Burton wackiness added into it. I like it. <br /> <br />This is definitely an odd little film. Reviewing this one is easy, really, and it can all be summed up in a single sentence: If you're interested in intriguing, surreal and beautiful imagery in movies, you simply have to watch this film. There are very few films that can compare with the visual splendor of this movie, which is remarkable on pretty much all fronts from the costuming to set design to outdoor scenery to matte paintings to cinematography and so on. Make no mistake, the visualization of this film goes far beyond a simple attempt at period re-creation. The whole thing stands between the border of the real and the surreal, simultaneously seeming like nothing you've ever actually seen, but still seeming like it almost could exist, somehow. The colors are all deep and strong, mostly earth tones, but with a sorta depth and intensity that the film never appears lifeless. The scenery is particularly striking, with banks of fog all about, and the surreal forest, with the gnarled and dark, nearly charred looking trees against the yellowed leaves. I'm trying to describe, but I just can't. It's just amazing, and the film creates another world in a way more powerful and convincing than in any other film I can think of. You just have to see it. <br /> <br />Some of the other parts of the film, however, don't entirely work. This is a Tim Burton film, and as such it has a kinda weird tone, with lots of weird and wacky stuff going on, even though the film as whole is fairly serious. This even comes down to the death scenes, some of which are dead serious, (such as the one most prominently shown in the ads of a man being ridden down at dusk, and Crane's mother's grotesque fate) and some are comic.(such as when one character is decapitated, but his head spins around on his stump repeatedly, for some reason) This is typical of Burton's stuff, so the fact that it is this way doesn't really surprise, but I really think this film could've been completely amazing if it had been made as a straight horror film. This wackier stuff isn't always all that jarring, but their no denying that the more serious scenes are invariably the most effective ones, at least for me. <br /> <br />The plot is arguably excessively convoluted, though, in the end, I really don't care that much. Plot just doesn't matter much in this sorta film. The complicated plot, however, does require that the characters spend quite a bit of time just sitting around and talking, which does hurt the film some as the indoor scenes definitely aren't as impressive as the outdoor ones. (They certainly still look great, however. Just less great) The acting is more than sufficient for the purposes of the film, though nothing much really struck me about it. The casting was is appropriate, at least from a visual standpoint, as it includes plenty of odd looking people to fit in with the unusual world that they locate. Elfman's score is your fairly typical Orchestral stuff, but it does work very well, and is both quite beautiful and quite eerie. Also, there is quite a lot of severing going on in this film, as you'd imagine, though it's generally not terribly gory, I think, as the limbs or head typically just sorta fall off, with out much or any blood. Some of it is fairly impressive, though most of it is done with CG effects, and I definitely prefer the real thing when it comes to gore effects. <br /> <br />I dunno, that's about it. If a movie looks this good I can put up with about anything else. This is not to say that the story and tonal aspects of 'Sleepy Hollow' don't work at all, as they do work quite well for the most part. But, it coulda been better. I dont know what these other reviewers have been smoking??? This movie is so worth seeing and even owning. I admit I do own very few movies only because most I only watch once, but this one I will definatly watch over and over. The acting wasnt fantastic, but it kept you interested and was well done with the material, and the plot twists were awsome. I was on the edge of my seat through at least 90 percent of the movie. Finally the ending....WOW!!! The ending is DEFINATLY one you will NEVER guess. I was blown away!!! This movie is disturbing, graphic, and mezmerizing and will have you sitting on the edge of your seats in disgust, horror, and pure enjoyment. Gripping but gory thriller/horror film

"Saw" is a creepy low budget film with high wattage actors. It promises to deliver tense moments and it does. Several reviewers have stated that it puts up one too many red herrings and, you know, maybe that's true, but frankly I love that stuff - I eat up Agatha Christy-type story lines. And this is somewhat in that vein - just extremely gory. <br /> <br />A couple of guys who don't know each other wake up in a disgusting bathroom (I think it's the one that Ewan McGregor went toilet diving in Trainspotting...)chained to the walls. The corpse of someone who blew his own brains out lies between them. They can't free themselves unless one or both of them can saw off his leg using a saw provided by their tormentor (yes, they try it on the chains first to no avail). Provided with piecemeal clues, the men try to devise a way out of their prison, only to find that if they don't do exactly as their tormentor has stated one of the man's family will be murdered. <br /> <br />The cast includes Cary Elwes (Princess Bride and Twister), Danny Glover (do you really need help here?), Monica Potter, and a few unknowns (one of whom wrote the story). <br /> <br />The acting is well above par for such a film. The film is sufficiently claustrophobic when it needs to be and expands outside to give us a bit of breathing room only to reel us back in for more. <br /> <br />If you have a stomach for some gore and a few really good thrills, check this film out.B0006SSOHM10AE8LL9S715YTE02005-03-18

Boring

I did not like this film. It might have had a great concept, looked good via story boards, but the end result was just. boring. How do I know it was boring? It was so boring that I fast forward the DVD scenes for a good twenty or so minutes jumping to the end. We all know the movie, I am sure. Two chaps wake up chained in a bathroom. Sounds like something from Married with Children eh? But not this, some psycho (like there is not one hanging around every corner these days?) did this two them and they have to "piece" (excuse the pun) the clues together to solve the mystery. <br /> <br />The movie tried too hard to have psychological horror and gore horror. The psychological horror seemed, at least to me, as if it was trying too hard to be suspenseful and terrorizing to the mind. Solid clues and hit and miss clues just didn't go over well with me. It seemed to me as if the direct was trying to throw all the old and new cliches together (i.e. Hitchcock meets SEVEN meets X-Files meets CSI and on and on and on). In this case, the charming psycho (who we think we see but ahh the ending the ending) kidnaps lads and lasses who are having a poorly lived life from their own making and puts them through a psychological horror test to see if they regain the appreciation for living. For example, the torture of a young lady who takes drugs, well she will get a bit of a headache if she doesn't learn to appreciate her life. This headache will be a everlasting one due to the fact that if she fails this test, her head explodes. Charming? <br /> <br />Then there was the gore. We all know there is going to be gore in a movie called Saw (as if you would be thinking this movie is aimed toward helping you with wood working techniques). Now it wasn't the kind of gore you would see in, say, Freddy vs. Jason or Seven. The film writer and director tried to have the gore too sinister. The film tried too hard with this department too. An example of on of the gore scenes that was a bit subdued but still a bit to the ol' stomach is when some fellow who has a bad life has to find his way through a maze of razor wires due to the fact he tried to commit suicide (not the best way to help people with mental handicaps if you ask me). If he makes it, he lives, he doesn't. So he is cut to shreds. Even better we are hit repeatedly by the images of gore. Again. and again. and again. I think we get the point here, at least I did. <br /> <br />I dont know. I am sure many of you like this film, and I am sure it has some good qualities. But for me, someone who's seen many a film come and go, eh, I just would rather read a book and go to bed then watch this snooze of a movie. Maybe though. Maybe what bothers me the most is that, taking into account the psychological horror and the gore, we are suppose to ... in some sick way ... say that what the psycho killer is doing is good. Like with the girl who takes drugs. She "regains" her humanity or something to that effect. Are we suppose to say that this sort of treatment is good? I dont know. Not bad

It was pretty good. I would consider it more of a gory thriller, rather than horror. Nevertheless, an entertaining movie, definitely worth the watch. But, as with most u.s./canada releases, this was not the 'real' movie you want to watch. Unfortunately, the original had to be edited so it could go down from nc-17 to R rating...yes, it was originally that gory. None of us in the u.s. got to see the original uncut version, and even worse, its not even available on dvd....stateside!! Luckily, our mates in the uk DID get to see the uncut version in their theatres, and its also available on dvd (region 2, PAL). CREEPY!

On my Stephen King kick. I was disappointed in this movie. The music was WAAAAAY over the top. The acting was very good (especially Jack Nicholson-- CREEPY!), however, and I was scared. Still, I felt like I didn't really know what was going on and there wasn't enough development of the story. At two hours and some change, it's not short, but they spend too much time on the set-up and not enough on the development. (I know it's hard to make a novel into a movie. Scarier: Jack Nicolson, Or The Blood From The Elevator? Hm..

The Shining is one of those movies, one that people who love horror movies are absoloutly taken with it, and those who hate horror movies still find it "fantastically entertaining". How is this pulled off? <br />Well truthfully, it's becuase of the acting, but other elements sell it too. While the movie is feverisghnly spooky (mostly due to the fact that it doesn't just use nothing but cheap scares), it's not grotesque to the point people squirmish just by the sight of seeing, a technique used in movies such as Friday The 13th and newer movies such as Saw. Another is the script, cleverky thought out, which may drag out some times due to who exactly you are (AKA, If you like movies such as Freddy Vs. Jason and The Grudge, you may find this too long to get going), but if you loved the good, old fashined horror flicks (namely Halloween), you'll find it interesting, clever, and pscologically mind numbing (that's a good thing). As I said before, the main selling point of this movie is that acting, which is absoloutly perfect-- never for a single moment due you question how the movie was made, or about the actors, I believed that this was a real family, that "Jack" had really goen insane, that the mother was struggling to be brave but absoloutly couldn't. Excellent But Drags In Spots

This movie (which barely resembles the book) is an excellent film. However, some of the scenes take forever as the camera slowly pulls back. <br /> <br />One totally blown potential moment of drama is when Wendy reads Jack's manuscript. Instead of hearing Jack's voice off air saying "How do you like it?", we see Jack slowly creep up behind Wendy first. My favorite "horror" film of all time

In my opinion, this is the best "horror" film ever made. However, it is not the conventional horror flick, full of blood guts and gore - and that is why its the best, really. The directing is superb. Kubrick is a genius who has no equal. Every shot of every scene is labored to perfection, like all his movies. The scares are not shallow make-you-jump scares... they are intense scenes of creepiness that invade your mind, forcing you to think and feel in ways you never want to, but follow nevertheless, out of curiousity and intrigue. This is the genius of it all. The best scary movies are not repulsive, they want you to look, to explore, but all the while you ask yourself, why am I following? No other director can take a script with very little violence (for a horror movie) and very little real action (for a thriller) and deliver the goods almost on the look and feel alone. <br /> <br />Kubrick knows how to scare, he knows what fear really is and he knows how to pick a soundtrack. This music is downright chilling. This is a movie I saw for the first time well over ten years ago and ever since certain scenes have never left me... the twins standing in the hallway, Wendy sitting in the bathroom screaming in sheer terror as Jack tears the door down, and room 237. Who would have thought a scary movie could be made with good acting? I am not a fan of horror, really, so I dont have a vast knowledge of films made in this genre, but the only other horror film I can think of with real, quality acting was the original Exorcist - another classic. <br /> <br />This is not a movie of cheap thrills. This is a study of the psyche, an exploration of fear itself. What terrifies people? I think Kubrick wanted to get to the heart of true terror by answering that question. Terror is not an ugly monster and blood and guts. I don't believe in any of this crap and it still scared me!

I sneaked into a theatre when this flick was re-released in 78', I was a brazen ten year old then. I remember watching this movie from in between my fingers and being absolutely scared silly but riveted to my seat by my fright,man did I reget seeing that movie. This dvd version is digitally perfect terror. The added scenes and subliminal imagery just enhances the terror not to mention the digitally enhanced soundtrack. This movie if watched late at night alone will with out a doubt have you freaked out. I dont need to go into detail about it as others will. Absolutely terrifying! A must have!

I was very reluctant to watch this movie for years because of the fact that I was terrified to watch it. I was scared of watching this film for the longest time. My girlfriend talked me into watching this. I loved the film. It really did scare me too. Just thinking back in history, when this movie was in the theaters, everyone walked out of the theater in dead silence after the movie was over. This made me even more interested in watching it. After watching this film, I too was left in dead silence. I had a very hard time falling asleep that night because of this film. The Exorcist so hot you will buy the DVD !!!!!!

The Exorcist is a great and scary movie.It is about a teenage girl who gets possessed by a demon and two priest try to save her. This move came out in 1973 but a special edition DVD was released a few years ago. On this DVD there is 11 minutes that was never seen in theaters. What's really good about this DVD is that it was digitally restored and has better sound. <br /> But there are some bad things about it. The beginning of the movie gives a little bit of background, but its kind of confusing and long. Also it has too many swear words. What is cool about it is that it is based on a true story, but its really supposed to be about a boy. <br /> On the day of the release in theaters, many people fainted vomited or even got a heart attack because it was really scary and they had never seen something like it before. A BOY'S BEST FRIEND

There had been nothing like it in American movies. People asked each other where they were when they first saw it just as they later asked where they were when they heard about Kennedy. The ads & posters said that no one would be seated during the film's final 15 minutes. Something unheard of to a movie going public who never paid any attention to movie time schedules. Exhibitors had to sign a contract agreeing to enforce this stricture before they could book the movie. The Hollywood production code people refused to pass the movie unless a shot of Janet Leigh's belly button was cut. Hitchcock simply withdrew the film then later resubmitted it saying the offending button had been excised. (It hadn't.) The Catholic Legion of Decency which wanted to condemn it, having lost the battle over the public's desire to see with GONE WITH THE WIND, wouldn't make the same mistake twice so gave it a B rating (objectionable in part for all) straight off. Early critics laughed and said no one would want to see a movie in which the leading lady was killed off in the first 45 minutes. (The critics' derision was drowned out by the sound of people stampeding to the box office.) And they commiserated with poor Janet Leigh whose opening scene was in a seedy hotel room where she had just finished having sex with John Gavin & wore nothing but a bra & half slip. Hitchcock countered these objections by pointing out that if he had made the movie in Europe the leading lady would wear even less & nobody would object because the movie would then be considered an 'art film'. The movie hinted at homosexuality which Hitchcock always denied. And even worse it was the first American movie (Hitchcock was very proud of this) to show a toilet. And he didn't just show a toilet but had Janet Leigh rip up a piece of paper & throw the bits into the toilet then flush the thing. But the biggest shocker was the infamous shower scene. Never has film editing made such an impression on an audience. People thought they saw a lot move of Leigh than they actually did. (It's here the offending belly button pops up.) Critics accused Hitchcock of being sadistic toward the audience just as some of his leading ladies said he was to them personally. Hitchcock protested, wide eyed, that the scene was simply 50 odd bits of celluloid spliced together (you can actually count them if you're not to terrified). And if the scene's fast editing didn't get to you Bernard Herrmann's shrieking violins did. (Herrmann's music shrieks have become a music icon like the first 2 bars of Beethoven's 5th Symphony & ON THE BEAUTY BLUE DANUABE.) Hitchcock spent so much time working out this scene in his head & on story boards that when it came to the shooting he claimed he was bored & let Saul Bass who did the imaginative title sequence do the actual directing. Joseph Stefano's script (based on a Robert Block novel) is often more than efficient. The scene between Anthony Perkins (fresh from a successful debut in FRIENDLY PERSUASION which left millions of highschool girls pining for him) and Leigh in the parlor of the motel office is very effective. Stefano catches some of the dymanics of child abuse & conveys character & motive through the dialogue. And who can forget that looming Edward Hooper house? Hitchcock tries to out-Castle Castle!

What many fans don't know about "Psycho" is that it was Hitchcock's attempt to emulate and improve on a formula that another director of the day, William Castle, was enjoying with much success. <br /> <br />Castle was raking in the profits with low-budget suspense and horror flicks that he presold with exploitative promotional gimmicks. Castle gave us the theater-blackout in "The Tingler", the "ghost viewer" glasses in "13 Ghosts", the in-theater dangling skeleton in "House on Haunted Hill", life insurance policies for audience members that died of fright, and countless other schtick. In most cases, it was the hype that filled the seats, not the quality of the films they were associated with. <br /> <br /> <br />Hitchcock observed this and decided to try his hand. First, he insisted on a low-budget and used a TV crew. Then came the gimmicks: A much publicized talent search to cast the "mother" character (who of course never really existed); theater management enforcing a rule that no one is seated after the film begins; and perhaps the most daring maneuver...killing off the leading lady and abandoning her plot 40 minutes into the film. This breach of contract between director and audience was a total surprise when the film was first released. Unfortunately the iconic notoriety of the shower scene in today's popular culture has spoiled the surprise for any modern viewer. <br />Hitchcock also appeared in the humorous trailer, engaging the audience directly, just as Castle did in many of his trailers. <br /> <br /> <br />"Psycho" has not aged well. Modern audiences will find it slow and long-winded, and some of the plot elements that merely stretched credibility in its day will seem downright illogical today (e.g. Marion stealing $40,000 to entice her boyfriend to marry her?) The dual personality of Norman Bates was such a high concept in 1960 that a psychiatrist character is trotted out to explain it to the audience in a lame epilogue, while today's viewer will most likely guess the identity of Bates' mother early on, without any further exposition needed to justify it. <br /> <br /> <br />Still, if you can suspend your modern biases and try to view it in the spirit of the time when it was made, you should be able to appreciate "Psycho" for what it is---a classy experiment that laid the groundwork for a new genre of horror movie. <br />078322584951A31QEAZMJWBF2822005-01-24

A Taut Suspense Thriller with a Great Cast

When Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), feeling powerless in an affair with a married man, Sam Loomis (John Gavin), impulsively steals forty thousand dollars from her boss and leaves town, she is pursued by guilt and ends up at a motel run by shy Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) - who is apparently under the thumb of his invalid mother - and then dead in the shower. This is the premise of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous movie, PSYCHO. When PSYCHO was first released in 1960, it was loved by audiences but scorned by critics as a shabby shocker. Since then, PSYCHO has won the respect of critics while remaining wildly popular with the general public. There is good reason for this. The movie's scenes are concisely written. It was made on a low budget, yet the gritty look of the film fits the sordid nature of the subject matter, and the gifted cast dominates. Bernard Herrmann's electrifying, all-strings score is one of the greatest in all film, conveying most of the movie's emotional subtext. PSYCHO's famous set piece, the "shower scene," shocks even today (and all the more for its restraint - that is, what it DOESN'T show), from Marion's delight at stepping under the spray (symbolically washing away her error), to the entrance of the knife, to the blood running down the drain, to the final shot of her lifeless body and staring eye. Janet Leigh's performance as Marion is one of those perfect film portrayals, from post-tryst beginning to tragic end. (Marion's life was brutally ended before she could repair her mistake, as she had resolved to; this is why her death is a tragedy.) Because Anthony Perkins became typecast as "Norman Bates," it would be easy to overlook the intensity of his acting in this first version of PSYCHO (there were three sequels). Watch his smoldering eyes when Marion suggests that he put his mother in "a madhouse," or his disgusted reaction on finding Marion's body - one would think that he had nothing to do with her murder. Martin Balsam makes the absolute most of his sixteen minutes of screen time as Milton Arbogast, the private detective called in to investigate Marion's disappearance. His questioning of Norman is one of the most remarkable things I have ever seen in a movie, sounding almost completely improvised. Vera Miles plays Marion's sensible but brave sister who, together with Sam, investigates the mystery following Arbogast's (literal) downfall. <br />It has been said that PSYCHO is unusual because its (sympathetic) female lead is killed off forty-five minutes into the action. PERKINS DESERVED AN OSCAR FOR HIS PERFORMANCE!

This film is a great masterpiece of filmmaking! Perfect in every sense. It is Anthony Perkin's masterpiece as well....no other character in film history makes you cringe yet feel sorry for at the same time. It takes a special talent to do that and why he didn't get nominated for the Oscar much less win will never be understood!! Just as Vivien Leigh will always be Scarlett O'Hara, Judy Garland will always be Dorothy, Anthony Perkins will always be Norman Bates. <br /> <br />The rest of the cast is outstanding as well...notably Janet Leigh as the doomed Marion Crane. Better than stoker

Well, I haven`t seen Lugosi film, nor Nosferatu (1922, 1979). But when I watched this, I felt it is a perfect movie. I later red the original and, Jesus, this is far more superior. Many people can complain about Keanu Reeves and Ryder. They are just fine. Could have been better? Maybe. But most important thing is if the story is engaging, if it grows within you when you are watching. And it does. Here you can find gothic horror, irresistible seduction, suspense, and love. Action takes place at appropiate pace. There is not a week line in screenplay, which is one of the things than make a film being great. <br />The plot is much more improved than Stoker's. His 1997 Dracula is interesting: for me it was originmal to write a book in a diary form. Also the vampyrization of Lucy is shown in detail. But I didn`t like Draacula portrait: an evil thing, but a thing: a zoologic curiosity. It is a kind of species that moves to a bigger place because thre is no more food supply and just grew up to have a new living location. Here you can find Dracula is that but also a deeper character: still he is touched by love. In the book, why Dracula attacks Lucy? he want`s an assistant. But why Lucy? was just coincidence, his first victim to be so close to Harker's fiancee? And Coppola may have thought that between the Count and Mina there was something else than a new victim. So with those elements he developped a more profound, richer plot. Dracula still wants to go to London to find a new food supply, but also perhaps he could have a new chance: to gain his love again: darkness can triumph over death, yes, but also love. With this he achieves PURPOSE, a thing that makes his character be more complete. Thanks, FFC, for improving the original. <br />So with this improved plot, perfect pacing and superb visuals you have one of the best movies made so far. Stupid, Bloody, Pointless -- A Feast ofCatholic Sexual Guilt

Plenty of smart people have pointed out how awful this movie is, but I would like to step back a little further and ask the question why. This is clearly a case where the director not only has no feel for the material -- he hates the material and is determined to debase it as much as possible. <br /> <br />Dracula is not only the story of a great romantic hero. It is the story of Woman at her purest and most passionate -- a story of love and longing and mystery and romance. It becomes brutally plain very early on that Francis Coppola hates -- literally hates --- the idea that sheltered maidens like Mina and Lucy could find Dracula attractive. <br /> <br />Coppola does everything he possibly can to make Dracula ugly and repulsive, and to demean the romantic feelings he inspires in women. Coppola, like far too many Catholics of a certain age, apparently equates physical desire with bodily filth. Every scene he shoots not only plays up the eroticism -- which others have complained about -- but also tries to link it to ugliness, filth, and (literal) bestiality. The priests and nuns really did a number on this guy! When it comes to wiseguys machine gunning each other, he can make it into a romantic ballet -- but love and sex are disgusting to him. <br /> <br />The irony is, all this sabotages his own film, makes it all but unwatchable. The gross out gore is no substitute for suspense, chills, and romance, which is what the classic original supplied in abundance. And Wynona Ryder and the sadly unappreciated Sadie Frost are all but wasted in this movie. Wasted in a different way is Keanu Reeves -- "Dude! Dracula, Eat your heart out

Gary Oldman stars as Dracula in the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula." As a human Dracula was Vlad The Impeller, a warrior in the sacred order of the dracul [dragon] a society that the Dracula family had been in service to for time immemorial that was supposed to protect the churches of Transylvania, this relationship however did not last. After a vicious war against Muslim Turks Dracula remains victorious, however, afterwards the Turks then sent false news of Dracula's death to Elizabeth Dracula's bride, whom he prized above life itself; by the way did you know that the "bride" is played by none other than Winona Ryder? Overcome with grief Elizabeth drowns herself in a river, Dracula, infuriated then vows that he will rise from his death to avenge hers with the power of darkness. Spooky huh, 400 years later he returns and with the unwilling help from Jonathon Harker [Keanu Reeves] he will escape to London where he meets willamina , who happens to be johns fiancé and the spitting image of Elizabeth, could this spell disaster? <br />This movie obviously gives an artistic outlook on Dracula not only his dark monstrous half but also his human side, the one with heart. This movie shows a cacophony of talented actors and actresses that will not only keep you on the edge of your seat but will also charm you with its soap opera like moments. This movie will have you wondering in amazement how it only won 3 awards. And for all you Dracula fans out there don't worry the Dracula legacy will always carry on even though he dies at the end. For those of you that worry about how much the actors can make you believe perhaps you should see it just remember to pack lots of garlic. The most beautifully filmed DRACULA

This is without question one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It's production values are rich and gorgeous. The hauntingly original music, lusciously dark cinematography, visual effects, set decoration, art direction, and magnificent costume design are unlike anything I've ever witnessed. I wish I could live in this world. Now, the performances are NOT the greatest. Reeves and Ryder look good, but their readings are too wooden. Gary Oldman is perfectly cast as Dracula. Amazing. Waits as Renfield is a casting coup. It's a shame this hasn't received the DELUXE treatment on dvd. If you own a laserdisc player there IS one to be found, released by Criterion. Columbia / Tristar needs to port ALL of Criterion's materials over to a new dvd edition NOW and give it a new remastering. Again, the performances are the film's major flaw. Intriging

I saw this film when it was first released and it has stayed stayed in my mind as the best movie made about Dracula. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that this is Francis Ford Coppela's version of the classic story because he went deeper into the story and delved into Dracula's motives for his evil. It was a good decision because it works better on film and also keeps it from being just a hack and slash horror movie with one big bad that everyone hates. <br /> <br />The wardrobe and set designs are beautiful and atmospheric, as is the music which is romantic, exciting and errie at the fitting moments. Two of the best scenes is poor Lucy in all white and the awesome race against the sunset, very well done. The only thing that I don't think was as good as it could have been is Keanu Reeves' fake British accent because it was very obvious in some of his scenes.
