Music Of The Night

This is the movie Webber fans and Phantom fans have waited for and it lives up to the stage version in every sense with stunning costumes, and wonderful sets. This movie deserved more Academy Award accolades than it was given. This movie made feel like I was transported into a hidden world of passion, maddness, and music. Emmy Rossum delievered a stunning performance as Chirstine who is charming, sweet, and innocent-- I can only hope to see more of her-especially on-stage. But, the best performance in my opinon came from Patrick Wilson who plays Chirstine's protector and lover he does a simply stunning job and I find myself falling in love with him each time I hear his beautiful voice. Gerard Butler in my opinon was a poor choice for the mysterious Phantom who takes control of Christine's mind- his voice didn't seem to fit the role despite the fact that he is the veteran stage performer in this movie. The newly added song is perfect for the feel of the movie and is beautifully sung by Minnie Driver in the end credits. There are a few moments I will skip watching this DVD "Prima Donna" will be one of them. All in all this a beautiful movie and it's one to own in your collection especially if you love musicals or the movie "Moulin Rouge." I can't wait to get this one! Delighted

I had the awesome opportunity to live in New York City for two years while I finished school at NYU. Therefore, I had the opportunity to see Phantom on the stage 4 times. Nothing - nothing will ever compare to seeing Michael Crawford as the Phantom. However, Gerard Butler made a fantasticly good Phantom, too. I did not always like his interpretation of what the Phantom was thinking or feeling, I grew to love him by the end of the film. Emmy Rossum was unquestionable as Christine. Raoul was a little stiff, but he pulled his part off pretty well. His voice made up for his "wooden" performance many times. Minnie Driver was over the top, and I did not like her in her as Carlotta. While the part is a bit of a comic relief, Minnie Driver's character made the scences a comedy. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I have pre-ordered the DVD. The vocal talent was amazing and Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler lit up the screen. I set out to see the movie because I loved the stage version so. I expected to be dissapointed - I was not. SUPERLATIVE

It's close to 20 years now since the morning my symphonic band director in college walked into class and said, "You guys have got to hear this," and those magnificent chords reverberated at full volume off the cement block walls. Phantom has been a fixture of my musical life ever since, and after I finally got to see it on Broadway 3 years ago, I would not have believed my experience of it could get any better. Then comes this movie, and after 8 viewings, I remain awestruck. You've no doubt seen a few reviews criticizing the cast, and Gerard Butler in particular for not having any artistry comparable to Michael Crawford's. For my part, I find these criticisms ridiculous. The film is an intrepid endeavor to transcend the stage production - a tall order, to say the least. To me, the movie did an incredible job of fleshing out the stage play, and criticisms of Butler are misplaced. My dad probably said it best: in the stage play, they seemed to go out of their way to make you wonder if the Phantom truly was nothing more than an apparition created by mass hysteria. In the movie, they went out of their way to make him real as a man. To that end, Butler's performance was OUTSTANDING. Often strained, always gruff - even raw - Butler's voice was nonetheless usually well intoned with occasional glimpses of its own artistry. His performance gave the tormented, suffering soul of the Phantom an emotional authenticity that the refined voice of Michael Crawford never really did for me. I'll admit that with my first viewing of the film, I was less than wowed by Patrick Wilson, despite his very good vocal performance. But after I thought about it a little, I found his "understated charm" to be the perfect counterbalance to the forceful, commanding, and darkly seductive Phantom. Wilson perfectly conveyed the groundedness that Christine so desparately needed. He also did a wonderful job of making the character's main flaw the over-confidence of youth; and the great surprise such a young man might feel at having himself tested. He was the perfect breath of fresh air after being lost in the "dungeon of black despair" with the Phantom. As for Emmy Rossum: again, the casting choice here gave the character an emotional authenticity I always found just a little lacking in the stage production. The role commands a vocal maturity that is typically cast by women well beyond the character's emotional age. (Sarah Brightman and The Leading Ladies, for example, were in their late 20's to early 30's in their debut performances.) This lovely, YOUNG, and extremely talented girl made Christine utterly engaging as you watch her coming of age and developing an identity apart from her father's memory. In short, the stage production, for me, has come to be an exercise of the imagination - a ghost story. The movie is a study in primal human emotions, and easily succeeds in stirring every one of them: loneliness, rage, grief, lust, fear, frustration, joy, and love - they're all there, and the film draws you in to experience them right along with the characters. It's hard to sum this up, but a pivotal scene made this movie the creme de la creme of film for me, totally separate from the usual Hollywood fare. Late in the film, the black knight drives a team of black horses to the cemetery, drawing the heroine into his trap; and the white knight gallops, riding bareback, through a misty dawn to save her. Most films offend me when they use melodramatic imagery like this to try and stir me. "Phantom," by contrast, succeeded absolutely. It succeeded because the cast and the filmmakers didn't try to impose these personas on the characters at the start. By the time the film reaches the ride to the cemetery, you already know that there is nothing supernatural about the Phantom - he's a dark, powerful, seductive presence preying upon the grief and imagination of a teenage girl. And there's nothing supernatural about the hero, either. He's simply ungiven to any eccentricities of emotion or imagination - but he's also unsparing in his adoration. As such, Raoul becomes an anchor, a rescuer and the perfect romantic figure to the emotionally wrought 17 year old. By the time you see the Phantom cloaked in a black cape driving black horses, and Raoul in the flowing white shirt astride the white horse, there's no need for future contrivances for either character to live up to the imagery: they've already been elevated to those romantic positions in our imaginations. Minnie Driver, Ciaran Hinds, Simon Callow, and James Fleet are not incidental in their comic relief roles: they're all fantastic in their own right, as are Victor Maguire, Jennifer Ellison and Murray Melvin in minor supporting roles. Miranda Richardson is a deep and intriguing Mme. Giry. (Is it a sisterly concern she has for the Phantom, or is she a little in love with him herself?) I can't say I cared much for Kevin McNally as Buquet, but it occurs to me that was the point of that character. It's hard to imagine any greater perfection being brought to this timeless story than what's been achieved by this film. Exceptional viewing experience; pleasure for the eyes/ears

While I have not yet seen the DVD presentation, I have, in fact, seen the film in the theater 7 times (and I have pre-ordered the DVD). Let me assure you, I do not see a film in the theater 7 times if it is not worthy. Gerard Butler gives a stunning performance as the Phantom. He is sensual, brooding, seductive, and yet manages to maintain a sympathetic aire. You genuinely care about him and want him to get the girl in the end. In fact, Gerard Butler's eyes are so intense that often he can portray an emotion without words. It is a very difficult feat and a high test to his acting ability that he is able to pull this off! After seeing him portray the Phantom I cannot imagine anyone else in the role. He has a screen presence that will make you truly weak in the knees! As for Patrick Wilson as Raoul, there is not a lot to say. Although his character portrayal is very accurate to Gaston Leroux's novel (weak willed, kind of a "cry baby") he does have an excellent voice. Emmy Rossum as Christine is truly a triumph! She has an absolutely wonderful voice. Being so young, she played the "innocent" very convincingly, and her wardrobe was stunning. Better than the musical

I was skeptical as to how much value a movie rendition of one of my all-time favorite musicals could add. To my utter delight and astonishment, I walked out of the theatre unduly satisfied, rating the movie more highly than the musical. I had the opportunity of seeing "Phantom" on stage three times, once when I was still a poor student and was seated at the upper balcony, and later in life in the most pricey seats located in the Grand Stall and Dress Circle - yet, none of these expensive seats offered the superior vantage points the movie could bring. The experience was synonymous to being given the best seats at any one moment in time in full view of the goings-on (no need for binoculars for a change!), allowing viewers to take in the immediacy of the hustle and bustle, songs and dances, romantic love triangle et al! Obviously, for the truly nitpicking, technicality like the singing in the movie was perhaps, for the lack of a better word, "sub-par" to the renown vocal ranges of the original duo (Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman). But it is unduly unfair to write-off the movie solely on account of this - the acting was moving and the rare occurence of perfect on-screen chemistry between Emmy Rossum as sweet Christine and Gerard Bulter as the enigmatic Phantom was a cinematic gem. Viewers are likely to welcome a meatier and more compassionate role donned by Miranda Richardson's Madame Giry, and even the controversial casting of Minnie Driver as bitchy Carlotta - I was puzzled at first given that she was the only thespian in the cast whose singing voice was fully dubbed until the closing credits. However, my doubts were cleared as soon as I saw her show-stealing, self-denigrating performance (and she gave the impression of enjoying every minute of enlivening her limited screen time). Having perused the scope/reality of the movie, it became obvious why Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to make a movie extravaganza of the musical with Joel Schumacher since 1991. It was excellent direction and collaboration at that. The movie was never meant to be an inferior re-make of the musical, but one whose aim was to improve on the stage-play with a more thoroughly fleshed out screenplay amidst the plethora of action, weightier characterisation of the supprting roles, not least greater substantiation of the many assumed knowledge unbeknownest to viewers in light of stage limitations, complete with lavish sets, costumes and cinemaphotography to sweep viewers off their feet! The movie worked as a great supplement and a must-see to fans of the musical, not to mention those, like myself, who have not had a chance to read the original novel by Gaston Leroux. The additional developments/tidbits in the movie were already worth the price of the ticket - some 15 minutes of newly-written music backing scenes absent in the musical! I won't be a killjoy by revealing the unnecessary, but here's a teaser: what about how Phantom came to be? I was also impressed by the amount of labour and toil that went into making this movie far more visually gratifying than the musical. Webber/Schumacher & Co even managed to outdo the already vibrant set/costumes' design in the muscial's "Masquerade" Act, accomplishing this feat by repackaging the scene in a glittery monochromatic affair, refreshingly adorning the costumes/sets in just black/white/gold/silver, except to single out Christine in her virginal pink outfit and Phanton in his killer red attire! And if the afore-mentioned didn't quite convince you to give the show a chance despite lukewarm reviews from highly paid movie critics, here's one final point to whet your appetite: while the musical never gave any concluding remarks as to what happened to Phantom, Christine and Raoul after they escaped from the underground labybrinth of the Paris Opera House, the movie provided a satisfactory wrap of the following: (i) if Christine & Raoul lived happily ever after and (ii) what became of Phantom - this epilogue alone was good enough justification to watch the movie. Can't wait for the DVD release on May 3rd...49 days to go and counting.... Amazon.comAlthough it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song). Director Joel Schumacher, no stranger to visual spectacle, seems to have found a good match in Lloyd Webber's larger-than-life vision of Gaston LeRoux's Gothic horror-romance. His weakness is cuing too many audience-reaction shots and showing too much of the lurking Phantom, but when he calms down and lets Rossum sings "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" alone in a silent graveyard, it's exquisite. Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Delicate Jazz Melody but Too Jazzy Ending

'Chicago' is the movie of a musical style in jazz, so it attracted me for that reason at first time. After I enjoyed the movie, I realized it contains the serious plot and theme. 'Chicago' shows that the society overflows with crime nowadays. In this movie, two female jazz singer want to acquire fame even by murdering someone. They take advantage of being prisoners, and pretend to be pitiful making up a party with their lawyer who wants only money. Finally, they win reputation on their own stage. The movie contains many of splendor scenes. Because the musical 'Chicago' is adapted for the screen successfully, it makes me very exciting and dynamic. The excellent background music and the jazz tune flows on the screen attractively. Although the music and scene look beautiful, the conclusion of this movie teaches us something immoral. The plot that two offenders get fame has an bad influence on the audience because the movie beautifies the crime in fact. I recommend this movie to the person who loves the music, especially jazz, because of the excellent music and performance in this movie like seeing an excellent musical. "Hey, what do you mean hanging?"

I have never been a big fan of musicals, and there is only a couple that I consider great movies, like "All That Jazz" and "Cabaret". I have to say that even though "Chicago" is not at the exact same level as these two movies, it is good enough to leave a lasting impression. The music is very good and entertaining, the performances of Catherine Zetta-Jones and Renee Zellweger are inspiring, and the story is interesting. The film starts by jumping right into the action, with amazing music - what a great song is "All that Jazz" - and with Velma Kelly (Zetta-Jones) walking into her dressing room, hiding a gun and washing the blood from her hands. That same night, Roxie Hart (Zellweger) is among the audience watching Velma and dreaming of being like her. She even witnesses when the police comes to take Velma away for the murder of her cheating husband and her sister, who was the object of his affection. Meanwhile, Roxie is acting on her dreams, and to get there she is sleeping with a man she believes has connections in the show business world and can help her become a star. When she finds out that he was lying, and his "connections" were just a scam to get into her pants, she kills him by shooting him point blank. The husband tries to save her, but is not successful in his attempt, and does not try hard after he figures out what was going on between the deceased and his wife; thus, Roxie ends up in the same prison as Velma. Enters Billy Flynn (Gere), the slick lawyer that has a reputation for being able to get anyone off the hook, no matter how gruesome the crime or how abundant the evidence. He is Roxie's last chance, so she has to engage in a competition with Velma to see which case he handles first. The corrupt environment also includes Mama (Queen Latifah), the prison guard who really believes in tit for tat and is always on the prowl for fresh meat. I was surprised when I learned that both Zellweger and Zetta-Jones actually sing themselves in all the music pieces, since the quality of their singing is superb and it appears to be done by professional singers. Both of them do an outstanding job in their acting, and are supported in their roles by the quality performances of Richard Gere and Queen Latifah. Entertainment with an edge

This is a musical in the tradition of musicals that are entertaining and easy to digest, and yet some hours later leave one with some apprehension. Is it really the intent of the story to celebrate getting away with murder? Or is this movie a statement about how murder by women in emotionally trying circumstances can be justified? Or perhaps is this an indictment of the criminal justice system? Or is this just a spicy entertainment? I'll opt for the latter; however I can tell you that women will find this more agreeable than their spouses. There is a kind of historically revisionist feeling to the sentiments expressed. I seriously doubt that this production, in which murder from jealousy is seemingly justified, would have been produced as a musical comedy before the modern era. But never mind. What makes Bob Fosse's Chicago a hit (and the Academy's Best Picture of 2002) are the beautifully staged and choreographed song and dance numbers, the spiffy direction and neat editing, a lot of leggy flesh along with some fine performances by Queen Latifah, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger. In particular I liked Queen Latifah's performance. When she comes on singing "When You're Good to Momma" she just about brings the house down. I also liked her portrayal of the savvy and corrupt Boss Lady on Murderess Row. Zeta-Jones got the Oscar for best Supporting Actress, and she was good, but I think Latifah, who was also nominated, was just as impressive if not more so. Zellweger, looking almost anorectic compared to the last time I saw her in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)--released only the year before--gives a solid performance in a very demanding role, although to be honest, it appeared that she was doing a lot of lipsyncing. Still one is amazed at how good she and Zeta-Jones were at the old song and dance, not having been previous known for being twinkle-toed. You might want to see this to compare how it stands up to a long line of filmland musicals, such as Oklahoma, South Pacific, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, etc. Chicago certainly is well within the confines of that venerable traditional, although it is my feeling, that despite the Academy's favor, this is just a notch below the best.B00005JLSE41A1G69BQLIUMWPN52005-02-11

Chicago....

Chicago is a good movie. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. A good surprise. I am not a fan of Catherine Zetta-Jones, but I will admit she is okay in this movie. I however think Zellweger steals the show along with Gere and Latifah. The plot of the movie is that two ladies are on murderess row and Gere is trying to make them stars from there. Yet, there is only one room for a legend. In the end there will be a star, who will it be? It is a great remake of a musical and I enjoyed the music. Best Picture? Not a chance...

This picture is obnoxious and unbearable to watch on the screen. Show tunes do not translate well to the screen if you're dealing with subpar actors who are not veteran Theater performers. Watching "Singin' In The Rain" or any old musical where people are actually singing and dancing with such talent and prestige, no cut-away shots to mask the fact that there is no way in heck the leads could do what they're trying to manipulate, is what I miss. Gere and Zeta-Jones and Zelleweger couldn't sing or dance to save their lives, but thanks to modern technology we can edit a movie so much to make this bombastic mess, which helps them appear to know how to perform in a play-sorry, no thanks. The fact that this picture somehow stole the Best Picture from Lord of the Rings (a true masterpiece) is beyond me and makes the Oscars a joke in my opinion. I couldn't stand this hyper-anxious-cynical take on our world and I don't know why others can. Remember, that's just my two cents. Little Shop of Horrors is one of my all time favorite movies. It's one of those oddball flicks that just kind of sticks with you, year after year. The music is great, the story is hilarious, and the casting is perfect (I'm not a real big Rick Moranis fan, but I can't imagine anyone else playing the part of Seymour Krelborn). I Thought This Would Be the Next "Rocky Horror"

When I first saw this movie I was amazed. It was breezy and fun, yet a very dark comedy underneath. It was a perfect blend of the two genres and it reminded me why "Rocky Horror" was so successful. I believed this movie would be playing at midnight shows, but it never took off. I blame home video for that and Warner Brothers for not recognizing its full potential. Casting was perfect. The special effects were cheesy enough. The cameo appearances were flawless. Steve Martin as a S & M dentist really steals the picture. STRANGE & FUNNY

This is a cult. And I am one of the groups loves this movie. It has everything, horror, music, comedy, and even a little bit of romance. Wonderful Movie!

Dirty Dancing is a classic that is absolutely wonderful! Everything about this movie is perfect in that there is no part that you are not sucked into these people's lives! I absolutely fell in love with it from the first time I watched it in the 1980's. I have the original VHS still and had to upgrade to DVD as it would not be right not owning a great movie. I controversies were a great point...pregnancy being such one. I also enjoy the forbidden love with Swayze and Grey-as they have great online chemistry. The movie is set in 1963 so the music and clothes are also great to watch. I like when Baby stumbles upon the "dirty dancing" club. It is great. Corny movie

This is one of the worst chick flicks ever. This movie came out in the late 80's and did fit with the time period, but now feels so corny and lame. The plot, the acting, and just about everything. Patrick Swayze always was an overrated actor, and how can you like Jennifer Grey? She seems like a big time whiney snob. The soundtrack helped improve the movie but couldn't save the cheese that this movie reaked. Honestly, the 80's was a cheesy decade and movies like this and Footloose helped make that so. No One But No One Put Jerry Orbach in a Corner

The sad news has reached us that Jerry Orbach has succumbed to cancer of the prostate. Of course we loved him in DIRTY DANCING as Jake Houseman, he played an updated version of the part Spencer Tracy essayed in FATHER OF THE BRIDE, the longsuffering but loving husband and father who wears a tough hide but hides a heart of mush, and he played the part to perfection, proving that there are no small parts, just small actors. I have always thought that DIRTY DANCING wouldn't have had the huge success it did without the core of steel that was Jerry Orbach's acting. We loved him on the New York stage as he created one indelible role after another--each one different as chalk from cheese--for he gave us everything from The FANTASTICKS to Chuck, the trod upon junior exec in Bacharach's PROMISES, PROMISES, to Billy Flynn, the fast-talking shyster lawyer in Fosse's CHICAGO. Maybe his greatest triumph was in the Gower Champion version of 42nd Street, in which his been there done that persona could really shine as the crumpled popinjay Julian Marsh. And children of all ages admired his classy work as Lumiere in the Disney musical BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Alas, most of his Broadway roles were never filmed or given to others, but with DIRTY DANCING (and TV's continuous LAW AND ORDER rerun loop) we will be remembering Mr. Orbach as long as there is tape running. Misunderstood

If you like Dirty Harry/Clint Eastwood westerns, I suggest staying away from this movie because you're probably used to lines like, "Go ahead, make my day." You probably can't imagine (or if you could, the thought would make you sick) a young and likeable Clint Eastwood who plays a guitar and sings love songs with an orchestra back-up, in a funny musical! Maybe I'm wrong, but prove it. Anyway, I liked it, and it's hard not to like this movie. It's funny! The lines are good. Joshua Logan directed it, a director with a great reputation. The sound effects and music track sounds exceptional for a movie made so long ago, and this movie is a spectacle. For 1969, the music score is great. It's a Lerner and Loewe musical. The music score gets the complete workup. This was only a few years after "Gigi" and "My Fair Lady" won the best picture Oscar, and one can tell the effort and budget really shows in this movie. The comedy actually works. It's about the California gold rush. 164 minutes, with an intermission too. Here are two lines that made me laugh: Two drunks talking, "What's a 'fornicater'?" Beautifully balanced Musical Western

Moreoften than not, this movie these days is billed as a Clint Eastwood picture, and although he is the chief supporting actor, make no mistake this is Lee Marvins vehicle, through and through. Like others I first saw this at a tender age, yet even now still find myself watching it with great affection, and humming along to great songs like "They Call the Wind Maria". The power of this picture is the flexibility of the acting, the premise is quite simple, a wandering clutch of gold panners in 1800 something Californian wilderness, set up a small town to cater to the wild proclivities of the all male population. Jean Seberg as the second wife of a travelling Mormon turns the place on it's head, and is "sold" to Lee Marvin as a legal claim, much to the chagrin of the envious locals, including his partner, played by Eastwood. There is a strange melancholy to the back story of Marvins character which is elevated by some raucous singing, almost slapstick comedy scenes, and dry humour throughout. Although catagorized as a "Musical" you never really feel that way, and it's more of a comedy/action western that just has some great music and songs. Lee Marvins drainpipe rasping actually got him a No1 record with "Wandrin Star", and Eastwood's vocal input is enjoyable, albeit quaintly misplaced. It's interesting to note that Eastwood demanded a high fee at the time for fear that these singing poppinjay parts of his character, might irreperably damage his tough man image. There are some wonderful cameos from a host of well knowns, including an Almost psychotic Ray Walston as "Mad Jack Duncan", and few will forget Lee Marvins tutoring of the young Horton Finney (Tom Ligon), in the ways of the World. Not a short picture at 166 mins but worth it - a funny, sad, uplifting and at times bittersweet good old fashioned romp through the old west, Hollywood style. I understand a lot of you like this movie. I cannot say the same. Never much for musicals, and always big on Eastwood westerns- I nearly vomited when I saw this. Two of the coolest actors to ever star in a Western- together...singing?! I love Lee MArvin and Eastwood, but this movie was rediculous. I enjoyed the plot, sort of...it was just the absolute wrong movie for these guys. I hear who's in it, and I expect Hang 'Em High or High Plains Drifter, and an Ennio Morricone score. I got this instead. As you can see, I'd be dissapointed. It was even worse to see what everyone thinks is a joke from the Simpsons, is a real movie. Thumbs way down on this one. My first true laugh

Thirty years ago when I as a young buck watched this movie, it was a delightful surprise. That Lee Marvin was so funny. You never forget that first kiss,well you never forget that first really uncontrollable laugh either. Lee Marvin, like alot of heavies, had a gift for comedy. The part of the movie when Marvin thinks he is in hell is so classic. The closing song is bittersweet. It is hard to say good-bye to all the great characters. Best Picture? Not a chance...

This picture is obnoxious and unbearable to watch on the screen. Show tunes do not translate well to the screen if you're dealing with subpar actors who are not veteran Theater performers. Watching "Singin' In The Rain" or any old musical where people are actually singing and dancing with such talent and prestige, no cut-away shots to mask the fact that there is no way in heck the leads could do what they're trying to manipulate, is what I miss. Gere and Zeta-Jones and Zelleweger couldn't sing or dance to save their lives, but thanks to modern technology we can edit a movie so much to make this bombastic mess, which helps them appear to know how to perform in a play-sorry, no thanks. The fact that this picture somehow stole the Best Picture from Lord of the Rings (a true masterpiece) is beyond me and makes the Oscars a joke in my opinion. I couldn't stand this hyper-anxious-cynical take on our world and I don't know why others can. Remember, that's just my two cents. An Inspirational Film

A Chorus Line is my favorite musical. The opening dance sequence and Suprise numbers were full of energy and passion. All of the songs were catchy and I think the film acurately portrayed the struggle and desperation of dancers/dreamers trying to make it on Broadway. A Chorus Line-The Movie: Not Too Good...My Suggestions

Really, this movie wasn't too great. The musical was quite conceptual and I really enjoy the music and what I've seen on tape from thw 70's, but the film is different. I think "A Chorus Line" is a very good and hoepfull piece, with a bit of a dark side (a bit different than Fosse's equally good "Chicago" which also opened on Broadway in 1975, which was very cynical and had a huge dark side), but it got much too soapy and less gritty in the film. I think the film would have worked with just vingettes of each dancer, a review type of movie. I'd also make "Company" the same way if I were hired as director. I'd be less concentrated on a story line then telling the story the play told, each dancer's story. I feel Michael Bennet should have choreographed the film. Although it probably would never happen, I'd be interested in what would happend if Bob Fosse directed the film. I think it would work better than this director's direction. It'd deffinetly be more for the MTV age and more conceptual like "All That Jazz." Perhaps, like "West Side Story" with Wise-Robbins as co-directors, Fosse and Bennet could have worked together. People! Come on, this movie is wonderful. I grew up watchiing it over and over. It is good from start to finish, and yes if you are wondering I have seen the on stage version. Both were terrific. Fun movie, very true to life of a dancer

Considering I have never seen the Broadway show, I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. The songs were fun, the dancing fantastic, the acting was relatively good, and I thought the plot would have been very good without the Cassie/Zach relationship being thrust into the limelight. Many people did not like "Surprise, Surprise," due to its replacing of an original song. However, I thought Gregg Burge did an absolutely amazing job with it. His dancing was so high-energy and almost technically impeccable. No complaints there. I loved: "Dance Ten, Looks Three", "Nothing", "Hello Twelve", and "At the Ballet." My one major complaint with this movie is Cassie. I felt she was annoying, she detracted from several of the musical numbers with absolutely pointless shots of her sitting in a chair, and I didn't enjoy her songs very much. Don't delete old songs

While I can understand the need for space and time in a movie, the two new songs, Richie's "Surprise" & Cassie's "Let me dance for you," are both fascinating and reveal to us something more about their characters. It was good that part of the excessively long montage went away, though they should not have left out Richie's previous part, in which he reveals that his athletic skills give him a scholarship to college in which he intends to become a kindergarten teacher, until he realizes that "Nobody's going to be standing there with no scholarship to life" and selects dancing instead. But Cassie's distracting subplot gets in the way a bit. It would have been better to have Cassie appear twice, singing both her original "Music & the mirror" (and emotionally stronger song) earlier, getting tossed out, then returning later to sing "Let me dance for you." In addition, Kristine's song, "Sing," reveals more about this pathetic bride whom we know or care nothing about in the movie. Her husband (and assistant in the song) is more powerful, but he too suffers from losing all importance to the plot. Beyond this, the character of Connie is completely ignored. She didn't even get a song, nor much to say. She could at least have helped out a bit with Diana's "Nothing." That's it. My tirade is over. The Adventures of Christopher and Tricky

As popular as Prince was in the 80's, it's hard to believe it has taken 18 years for Under The Cherry Moon to find it's way to DVD. Critics largely considered the film a stinker, especially considering it was only two years behind Purple Rain, but Under The Cherry Moon was a very good film, although very different than Purple Rain. Shot in black and white, Under The Cherry Moon starred Prince as Christopher Tracey, him and his buddy Tricky (Jerome Benton from The Time) are living it up in Europe. They wine and dine the rich and upper class and take their money, basically they are gigolos. They swear it never gets personal until Mary Sharon comes into the picture. Christopher falls for Mary in a big way, but her father Issac Sharon isn't having it. Drama ensues. The soundtrack is awesome and includes the songs "U Need Another Lover Like You Need a Whole In Your Head," "Mountain," and "Kiss" and the DVD includes the videos for the songs shot for the film. Once upon a time in a land called "Fantasy"

This is not nearly as good as the Purple Rain and Sign o' the Times movies... however, if you are a child of the 80's / hardcore Prince fan, then you already love every corny / self-indulgent second of Under the Cherry Moon. This is Prince at the height of his post Purple Rain out-of-control narcissism and that's what makes it so much fun! Cryptic in-jokes and costume changes run wild to the beat of Prince and the Revolution's quirky funk-pop. The movie isn't given any special treatment in it's transfer to DVD. No 5.1, no commentaries of any kind but the inclusion of the music videos for the songs Mountains, Kiss, Girls & Boys and Anotherloverholenyohead is a nice touch. I wish they would've added the live performance of Prince and the Revolution from the MTV Under the Cherry Moon premiere at Sheridan, Wyoming but I guess that will have to wait for the Under the Cherry Moon: Special Edition. Good for a frisbee

Don't waste your time with this, folks. This movie is BAD BAD BAD! Horrible acting, stupid story (Prince directed it himself, hey, he can't be good at everything) and outrageously ridiculous dialogue. But a few of the songs aren't bad (Mountains, Girls and Boys, Sometimes it Snows in April) and that's why I'm even giving it ONE star. This is a really dumb tale about Prince and Morris Day's valet Jerome Benton going to France where the former is a gigolo who falls in love. The one thing good I can say about this slop for the hogs is that it's better than the laxative-on-film "Graffiti Bridge." Prince in Valentino mode!

I shouldn't like this movie, but I kind of do. It's a total vanity project for Prince, but it's charming and funny so I enjoy watching it. Prince plays Christopher, a gigolo who plays piano in the French Riviera. He sets his sights on a rich heiress, and then finds himself falling in love. Meanwhile the father does not approve, and wants him hurt or dead. The movie is photographed extremely well by a legendary lensman called Michael Ballhaus. It looks phenomenal! And Kristin Scott Thomas seems to breathe some real life and class to her role as Mary. Jerome Benton is just fun to watch as he goofs on everyone. And Prince is Prince - mysterious and fully decked out in stack heels and full make-up. The DVD is nice. It includes all the videos, and a trailer. But the real treat is seeing it in widescreen after all these years. Filmed on location in Nice, France ... mmmmm! South of France. Hits include "Kiss" and "Girls & Boys". Some of Prince's most exotic and rythmic music.
