One of the best films!

Hoosiers is one of the best films every made, sports, drama, love story or whatever genre you want to categorize it under. This film is not just about basketball it offers so much more. It's about father and sons, mothers and daughters, second chances in life, overcoming adversity, forgiveness and a team who comes together to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a state championship. Gene Hackman is incredible as Coach Norman Dale and Dennis Hopper is genius as shooter. I don't know who won the best supporting actor award in 1986 but it must have been one of the all time great performances to beat out Dennis Hopper in his role as the town drunk and basketball guru. <br /> <br />I know there are many people who don't like sports movies because they feel they are not realistic. Although this movie is based on a true story, for Hollywood sake they had to change numerous facts, but who cares. You can scrutinize almost every movie made and make claims that something in the film is not realistic. I never understood why sports films are held to this standard. The scene in the locker room prior to the State Championship is unforgettable and inspirational. I have seen this movie many times and I still enjoy it like I was watching the film for the first time. In fact every time I watch this film, I take something new from it that I can apply and use in everyday life. The score is second to none and from the opening scene of Coach Dale driving through the farmland of Indiana the music grabs hold of you and sets the tone for the rest of the film. I would recommend this film to all people and not just basketball fans. Team Spirit

All professional athletes and coaches should have to watch this movie. It is about the triumph of a team that works together exhaustively to achieve an unachieveable goal. Gene Hackman soars in his most likeable role. Dennis Hopper is nothing short of miraculous in his supporting role, as the alcoholic father of one of the players who moonlights as the towns basketball history nerd. Barbara Hershey is quietly effective as the coach's love interest and the whole cast functions as a complete unit, much like the team does. <br />In case you have not seen it, this movie is the story of a basketball team that against all odds bands together to shock the Indiana basketball world. And more than that it is about second chances. Coach Norman Dale gets a second chance at coaching after an incident. Shooter (Hopper) gets a second chance with his son when he quits drinking, and the town gets a second chance at glory through the success of its basketball team. <br />Even though this is a baskeball movie, it is largely character driven. Hoosier Hysteria

Unless you grew up in Indiana and experienced "Hoosier Hysteria" first hand, you can never understand this movie completely. For the longest time, the state of Indiana had one big state high school basketball tournament. Every high school that had a boys varsity basketball team was automatically in the tournament, you did not have to qualify. It was much like March Madness in the sense that you would have very small schools (much like Hickory in the movie) knocking off the bigger schools in the state and making their season right then and there. It didn't matter if they went on to win the state tournament, it was the magic of the David vs. Goliath type game where the little guy prevailed. <br /> <br />About 8-10 years ago the smaller schools in the state decided they wanted their own tournament, reducing the state to "class basketball" based on the size of the school. 4A being the largest and 1A being the smallest, there is now 4 state champions rather than one. Therefore, we will never get the chance to experience the "Milan Miracle" for which the movie 'Hoosiers' is based on ever again. <br /> <br />Thanks a lot to the little guys who just could not stand the fact that the bigger schools won most of the time, but every now and then that one Hickory Huskers type team came along and pulled the upset, Cinderella story, etc..........B0006SSTDQ50A26VS586HEMGP502005-03-06

A Classic American Myth Comes to Life

Hoosiers is not one of those movies you have to be afraid to love. It is a great American film about the quintessential American myth- David vs. Goliath. While there is precious little historical evidence that the little guy rarely ever really wins in this nation in the real world, we would all like to believe that it is true. Right can stand up to might. Team play, selflessness, generosity and courage will carry the day. We all wish they would, but reality is they don't. Usually the Big is just way too Big, and the the regular guy is too caught up in making it from week to week to even care about the bigger picture, much less fight against it. Yet we all know that occasionally the improbable happens. A team of American kids wins Olympic Gold in Hockey while going up against the imperious Russian team along the way. A team of misfits stumble into a Superbowl win. A small town school can rise up and become the greatest power in Basketball in a Basketball crazed state such as Indiana. At least for one season, anyway. While the facts, the characters, the years and the reasons are all changed to protect the integrity of the Myth being told, the results are true. And when this movie finishes taking you on it's wonderful ride, you will be glad you watched this little gem. The film has a wonderful and nostalgic take on American small town life. This overall affection that the film makers have for their characters and the locale of the movie is then combined with an achingly beautiful color pallette, a real ear for the dialogue of the place and time, and a cast of America's finest actors and actresses. I believe that you will watch and treasure this movie many times over in the coming years, and you will never feel ashamed to admit that it is one of your favorite cinema pleasures. Morally Solid Movie

This movie is a great sports movie, hands down. But importantly, it also demonstrates solid character throughout. I love how the coach helps everybody out, no matter how unpopular or ostracized they are--he wasn't ashamed of the poor drunk fellow, or of his smalltown team. Sucks you in fast

As it says in the editorial review, this movie has one of the best opening sequences ever in any film. What I love about it is that in about 5 minutes you fully understand what the implications of big wave riding are. At that point, you are totally sucked in. When I have showed it to friends who have no interest in surfing, they can't help but want to watch the rest once they see the opening. Also, the quality of the shots throughout the film is top-notch. I have enjoyed the Endless Summer films and Step into Liquid, but they don't have me wanting to watch a second time. Amazing footage of the big waves

This film is basically a documentary which shows the outer limits of modern-day surfing. Instead of paddling into the wave in the traditional manner, surfers can be pulled into the surf by waverunners and can take advantage of huge waves which form many miles from the shore. The Billabong Odyssey is a 3-year project in which new technology is used to train surfers and to detect the locations of the "biggest waves on the planet". There is a lot of emphasis on safety in the project, which is understable when people are challenging 50 and 60-foot waves. The first part of the movie shows the assembling of the team for the project and the training that they go through. The culminating scenes show a Big Wave competition in "Jaws", a surfing hot spot off the coast of Maui. They called their expedition The Billabong Odyssey, and this documentary chronicles both the group's formation and its first major forays into the roiling waters off the coasts of France, Mexico, Australia, Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. <br /> <br />"The Billabong Odyssey" is more than just a series of breathtaking stunts being performed on awe-inspiring waves; it is an informative piece of filmmaking that instructs those of us who wouldn't know a surf board from an emery board on the fine points of the sport. Through voiceover narration by many of the men on the team, we learn about how the sport has changed and evolved over the years, most notably since the advent of towing vehicles which makes it possible for riders to go out to monster waves that previous generations of paddling surfers could only look off into the distance and dream about reaching. We are informed as to how monster waves form, where they are most likely to occur, and what kinds of dangers they pose for those brave (or foolish) enough to venture into them. We also see just how far technology will advance the sport in the years to come as innovative fans come up with more and more sophisticated equipment and accoutrements to make conquering that ultimate wave a viable possibility. In addition, the film reveals a great deal about the psychology of the sport, affording us glimpses into the mindset of people who are willing to risk life and limb in pursuit of that ultimate thrill. <br /> <br />Of course, the main attraction of a film like "The Billabong Odyssey" is its phenomenal, you-are-there views of some of the world's greatest waves and the men who attempt to conquer them. The filmmakers plunge us right into the thick of the action, allowing us to ride along with the members of the team, as they wipe out or fulfill their ultimate challenge - only to head right back into the surf to do it all over again. <br /> <br />The film feels a little disjointed at times, losing some of its focus `round about the midway point. The Odyssey members tend to get lost in the crowd and we miss that sense of camaraderie and group cohesiveness the movie provides us with at the beginning. Everything you hoped it would be.

If you're into motorcycle roadracing and haven't been living under a rock, then you've heard about "Faster" by now. It naturally draws all of the inevitable comparisons to the immortal "On Any Sunday," though its singular focus, effective editing, and engrossing backstory development make this the definitive roadracing movie. Like O.A.S., it has a beautiful knack of presenting the material in a manner that both interests and educates those with little prior knowledge of the subject while still including everything necessary to keep the most hardcore roadracing afficionado hooked. Inside the world of Moto GP

Moto GP is a world lesser known to most Americans - the exception of course are American motorcycle racing fans. In Europe, especially Italy and Spain, Moto GP is wildly popular. This is true for Japan as well. What I like about the video is the objective almost analytical insight it provides into the cloistered and exotic world of 28 superior riders - the world's best - where speeds on the track are routinely over 200 mph. <br /> <br />The latest release includes interviews with the sport's former champions including Barry Sheene, Mick Doohan, Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz as well as current champions. The interviews help you to understand the fierce competitive nature of the pilots and also the vast sums of money to finance the sport. I found the interviews fascinating as it gives you the human side of the sport (80% rider & 20% machine), a chance to compare the rider's very different personalities and their view of the sport as a whole. Barry Sheene, for example, liked " the crumpet." <br /> <br />I enjoy competitive motorsport and I found that the video is one I can watch again and again and still learn something new and interesting about Moto GP each time I watch it. Non-race fans will enjoy it too although obviously not to the same extent as enthusiasts. 2005 is going to be terrific!

Faster, if you want to understanding racing

Hands down, the best documentary I've ever seen (regardless of subject) is Mark Neale's "Faster." The subtitle is "Two wheels. 200MPH. Every man for himself." That pretty much tells the story of what this movie's subject matter might be. However, the real story is the people who ride, maintain, and write about these machines and riders. <br /> <br />Neale incorporates the current war on wheels between kid-phenom Valentino Rossi and his near enemy, rival, Max Biaggi, as a vehicle for examining how vicious and unreal the battle at 200mph can be when it's done at a world class level. As a side show, riders like Gary McCoy and John Hopkins demonstrate the character traits/flaws that create super riders in the world's most dangerous sport. <br /> <br />The incredible insight offered by past-greats, Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene, provides something between sports commentary, personal insight, and some of the funniest dry humor ever put on screen. <br /> <br />I've watched "Faster" a half-dozen times and I still get something new from on each viewing. TREK made my day - and my hike!

Even if you are NOT a hiker, this video was a blast to watch! I hadn't been hiking before, and after watching this video I went online and subscribed to all of the AT sites I could to glean more information. I've been out on several week long section hikes, and made it a point to try to visit some of the places in this video - that was the really cool part - I actually could SEE the places that were in the video, and it brought me thoughts about what these guys must have went through to not only HIKE this whole trail - but how they managed to carry the equipment to shoot it! I'm heading out for a month long section hike this summer, no way I would've ever considered it if I hadn't seen these guys in action! I've since watched some of the other titles out there, and was kinda surprised that it looked like just a bunch of partying losers who hiked.....most of the characters I've met up with so far who are thru hikers are some of the best people around - wish I couldv'e hiked with the Four Horsemen....maybe someday if they ever go again, I want to be along for the ride! This the the best AT video I have ever seen! Well Done!

What a great video! I have such a craving for videos on the AT, I've gotten my hands on every other availabe title I could find - but the quality of TREK put every other attempt at a documentary to shame...... and if you are even considering hiking the trail - you want to check out this DVD. The guys that created it were tons of fun to watch, and really gave a feel for what it's like to be out there hiking...it's definately not all fun and games! I was disappointed to see that another reviewer used their review to cheaply advertise someone else's DVD - cheap shot - TREK by far was the most realistic, day to day story reflecting what it is actually like out there. The camera angles kept my interest, and by the time the movie was done, I felt like I knew these hikers personally. A well developed story took place, and I couldn't wait to see what happened next! Super photography highlighted the adventure, and some very interesting "challenges" spiced it up quite a bit! One disappointment was that it was not long enough, I really wanted to see more when it was finished. As a hiker, there are many rough days, and lots of complaining happens - it comes with the territory of hiking a trail over 2,000 miles long, through whatever weather comes your way, this documentary help me to realize that planning a hike this long takes time and perserverance, and is truly rewarding in the end. TREK inspired me to do a long hike last year, and I'm considering a Thru hike in 2006.......I would not even have comtemplated the possiblity if I hadn't seen this first. Not the spirit of the Appalachian Trail

I just finished a Thru-hike of the AT in October. And was excited to see this DVD for nestalgia. And I was very disapointed with it. This movie captures a very small percent of people that are on the trail. During the video they are constantly bragging about how many miles they hike day to day, and are constantly complaining about the trail. Its almost as if they have something to prove. and this video is an ego boost. I HIGHLY reccomend the other A.T. Documentary called "2000 Miles To Maine." it captures trail life and different people and represents the trail in a much more positive aspect. If you are seriously interested in hiking the trail or getting information, or just curious about trail life, save your time and money, dont buy this video. Perfect for an Appalachian Trail fanatic

A friend recently gave me the TREK DVD as a present. I've watched it three times already and I'm pumped. <br /> <br />I thought it might be just scenery shots of the Appalachian Trail - like some stuff I've seen on the Travel Channel - but it has all kinds of interviews with hikers, and it follows a group of guys as they take a shot at a thru-hike. Good Tough Workout!

There is nothing fancy about the boxing workout on this DVD but it sure is tough. The first time I tried following along I couldn't make it through the whole thing but now I am feeling stronger and making it all the way. Best Tennis Instruction!

I have been playing tennis and buying books and videos for over the past 20 years but none of the material I have collected can compare to the teaching and techniques on the James Jensen's Pro Tennis Lessons DVD's! DVD is very informative and high quality. I did learn a lot about backhand, and find this DVD useful, but it definitely could be better. The author repeats many topics (there is rewind button for that) and talks too much (IMHO). There are no game videos (all u see is ball machine and back wall game). Bought two discs; both have the same problem

I first started the Pro Tennis Lessons with the Ultimate backhand a while back. The disc quality was poor. The "dirty disc" light flashed on my dvd player. I never have this problem with any of my dvds. Tried to clean it several time and was able to view the dvd for a few mins. I really like the coach but watching the dvd was a torture. The disc was so dirty that the pictures kept freezing on me. I finally had to give up. Two months later I bought the Ultimate Serve dvd and guess what...exact same problem..."dirty disc". I played hundreds of dvds with my dvd player and NEVER have this problem. His own body mechanics put a lot of stress on the shoulder. While he says quite clearly that the leg action is important, he under-demonstrates the details of coordinating the legs. He himself does not use the legs as effectively as he could and should, at least in these demonstrations. <br /> <br />The DVD is under produced. While of a little better quality than your home video cam, it is basically a filming of a chatty pseudo-lesson the author is giving. There is a lot of repetitive chat ("brush Up the back of the ball, UP the back of the ball"). The skills as he demonstrates them would make him a good low level college player or a decent middle of the road club player. They would not let him threaten to play at a high spot on a good college team (e.g. Pepperdine or UCLA). They would not let him threaten to take his own club championship very often unless, of course, he can produce on court better form than he demonstrates in the video. (He probably can.) <br /> <br />Finally, the editing is sloppy. We watch quite a number of successive examples when he pushes the ball long on serve, dumps a couple straight into the net, and misses his mark consistently. We would learn better if we saw super-slow-motion of the finest servers performing at the peak of their skills. The notion of whether the author has the form to compete for his own club championship is unknown from this video. Certainly this is not it. If you want to perform as an elite junior or tune your game to play at a good college, this isn't your ticket. If your skills are substandard, this is one of many places (all more or less equally good) where you can actually obtain basically decent body mechanics. <br /> <br />Things should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. My God!

Riveting! I couldn't believe this DVD was so amazing! One of our dorm mates bought it because she had been boxing lately. She put it on the big screen during finals and by the end of the DVD about 15 of us guys had gathered around yelling as these women fighters go at it. Each fight gets more hardcore. By the end of the DVD there were 15 guys standing around with beers just yelling at the screen. I hope this guy comes out with another installment. The craziest part was some of the girls in the DVD were really hot but damn could they throw down. As a dude who has some fighting skill I would be hesitant to fight the Mexican grappler, the tall Brunette or that Red head at the end.
