A real treasure!

Years ago I found a cassette of Granuaile in an Irish store. Since my family claims her as an ancestor, of course I bought it. I was immediately captivated by Rita Connolly's crystal yet powerful voice and how perfect she is for this album. The composer,Shaun Davey (her husband), wrote it for her. I've since read much about Granuaile and these two have so precisely captured the essence of this fiercely independent woman and how her life was influenced by major forces in the world. The songs are melodic and captivating and one can't help but be transported to the sea and shoreline off the west coast of Ireland. This past week I had the pleasure of seeing Davey and Connolly perform this work at Symphony Center in Chicago and I can say that the concert was simply fabulous. The album loses nothing in the translation to recorded form. I have since ordered the CD and cherish it. It's brilliant! Tremendous, moving.

This is a wonderful tale of a rich life, an Irish queen, woman of the sea, lover and wife, mother and captain. The songs are full of Irish wit and woe, triumph and poetry. This music brings to life the flow and rush of the sea, the smooth fast progress of a well-sailed ship. Rita Connolly's voice is golden and expressive; the pipes and the orchestra are wonderful. Nice collection

This is a nice small collection of a few Satyricon pieces that cannot be found elsewhere. The most economics-oriented of Biafra's albums

Jello Biafra pontificates on a number of issues that I personally find important: the need for teenagers and young adults to have free access to entertainment, music and media of their choice; the banality and anti-aestheticism of "mainstream suburbia" and the suit-and-tie, Christmas-shopping, pro-sports mentality fed to us in the media (that's how their corporate sponsors make money after all). <br /> <br />But here Biafra is much more concerned with the economics playing behind the scenes. Rather than "whine" about Tipper Gore, the PMRC and their efforts to deny people under a certain age certain types of albums (and movies, video games, possibly even live concerts), here Biafra goes into a much more powerful threat to freedom and democracy: corporate power and the DE FACTO censorship and authoritarianism it brings. You could best think of this album as a rebuttal to conservative economist Milton Friedman's book CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM. <br /> <br />This album was recorded in late 1997/early 1998, the era of anti-gang paranoia, the Newt Gingrich regime, NAFTA, drug wars, welfare reform, and Wall Street uber-alles. Biafra clearly points out President Clinton's repeated concessions to the conservative right, not just the Wall Street right but also cultural reactionaries (one of which would have been first lady had the Supreme Court not handed the 2000 pres election to Bush). This frustration over pro-corporate, pro-suburbia, anti-marijuana, anti-musical freedom "liberal" Democrats was certainly at least part of the fuel behind Ralph Nader's 2000 campaign. <br /> <br />Biafra points out, very honestly, that the corporate media deliberately blames society's problems on everything except the real cause (how screwed up our economic system is (this is a verbatim quote)), which not only unnecessarily scapegoats innocent people like Marilyn Manson and divides the nation among race and culture lines, but assures that the real problems will never be solved. <br /> <br />Of course, to inspire the people for social change, he also gives examples of how Russians and Eastern Europeans overthrew their communist-by-name-only regimes and set up democracies run, in some cases, by rock musicians! Fresher then the sweet smell of freshly cut Maple wood

I first heard Wayne Kirkpatrick several months ago on Christian Radio K-Love. They played "It's Me Again" from the Rocket Town Sampler (a great cd I might add) and I was captured. What a fresh breath of air that was.<br>What I heard was a mix of the Beatles, Graham Nash, America, as well as British Pop. Definetly a touch of British magic in his sound with such smooth and vibrant vocals.<br>I don't usually like to compare Christian music to secular music but I find it is sometimes nessasary to help make that comparison.<br>This recording is a must whether you are a Christian like myself, or a non-Christian. Hope this sells tons of copies.<br>I really have a lot of respect for the freedom that Don Donahue and Micheal W. Smith have given to thier musicians over at Rockettown Records. I just have to say, what a superior album this is! I just took a road trip to Colorado from Texas, and brought my traditional 12 CDs with me, including my new copy of The Maple Room and I have to say it moved me so much that I listened to it about 10 times over the 26 hours of driving!!<p>If you knew me, you'd know this is a rare occurence, I usually listen to an album once, put it away for a few weeks then listen to it again, but this album was so stunning, I couldn't stop myself! The craft that Wayne uses on this recording is that of an extremely well honed writer... I own hundreds of CD's from all kinds of music and this is one of the best of all! Wayne not only can write for others, he can really sing. Good, clear, soft voice. He sounds like a mixture of Phil Keaggy and Wes King. Excellent! I really like song number four: Blame It On Your Mother. It seems to be a fad these days to blame all your problems on some childhood flaw, and this song addresses that issue. The other songs are just as important too with great messages. I noticed that Susan Ashton does some vocals on this CD too. Excellent choice of background vocals. Thoughtful, frightening, funny, and overall brilliant

This was my first jello biafra spoken word cd I have ever purchased, and it is truly amazing. Jello molds his sarcastic humor, intelligence, and capacity to think all into one great album. The first cd is probably the funniest, with things like 'Half-Time,' 'Depends on the Drug,' and 'Clinton comes to Long Beach.' But the talks on the death penalty and the space shuttle are true, and consequently scary as hell. The New Soviet Union is my favorite part of the first disc, and again is frightening, the comparisons that Jello makes.<br> The second disc is on censorship but covers a wide variety of topics. A lot of it is about the media and how politicians and whoever are trying to censor cds and shows even more.<br> The last disc is my favorite. The first and longest track is mainly about prisons, and some of the horrifying statistics and reports about them. Then comes 'Wake up and Smell the Noise.' It is truly a brilliant track, about 20 minutes of intelligence, thought, and everything you would want in a political type speech. I won't ruin it, however, but this cd is definitely worth buying. Amazing- made me Wake Up and Smell the Noise

I am a huge Dead kennedys fan, and am very fond of Jello's sarcastic, biting ideas and sense of humor. But this album, being my first JB spoken word album, really astounded me. Jello pulls you in immediately ( 'Watch a tv news report with the sound off...' ), and keeps you hooked throughout the disc. I listened to the whole thing all one night, because I litterally could not put my cd player down and stop. By the end it was like 1:00 and I was exhausted and amazed. Everything he says is so true and relates so much to our lives that its almost scary. Jello Biafra is truly one of the great revolutionaries of our time (up their with Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn). Anyway, I can't wait to pick up Become the Media and I Blow Minds for A Living, and any radical activist, punk, anarchist, or hell, ANYBODY, should listen to this awesome album. Great Artistic Album

This was an amazing comeback for Biafra. After a long vacation, Biafra came back with this new 3 CD set, and he sure had a lot to say.<p>This album was more about his artistic "1984"-like visions than anything else. I bought this compilation of tracks from 1992 and 1993 to get the monumental theme 'Acid Eiffel' on CD, and was surprised to find that every track on the disc exceeded my expectations and was at nearly the same high level of quality. It was well worth the investment.<p>The style is analog trance and acidic trance techno with occasional IDM and Detroit affectations, more interesting than his later works. Some tracks sound more dated than others, but regardless, fans of warm analog techno with rich production values will dig it. Many of today's trance producers could learn a lot from it.<p>The original version was released on the ZYX label and had 2 CDs, while this US edition has only one CD.
