Great primer for Jazz Butcher newcomers, rare tracks aplenty

Newcomers: This is a great catchy balanced way to start. If you love smart bands, this is the right place surely. For hardcore Jazz Butcher fans, there are plenty of very rare tracks I've never even heard of. And they're good.<p>The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy band has always found a way of slipping through the commercial cracks. Robyn Hitchcock has a cult celebrity. What about Pat Fish & Gang? They're beyond similar with Robyn. Catchy tunes, smart lyrics, distinct humour, but with jazzy spiky guitar atmophere. Certainly a product of punk - only the 'no rules' freedom of punk could allow them to exist. They showed up past late for the punk game, but they applied that expression, and applied better musical tools. This is tuneful stuff. You really need this CD.<p>Blah Blah. Anyway, 'Cake City' collects material from the early-mid '80s Glass Records era. The beauty of this CD is it doesn't play as cute tuneful novelty, there's substance with the jokes. Of course, the gorgous lyrical tunes would perfect in the early '90s. But the balance here is stronger than any Jazz Butcher album from the '80s.<p>For hardcore fans, tracks 12-19 are required. Most of the Jazz Butcher albums are out of print. I own so many impossibly rare JBC records, I thought I knew it all. One of the most beautiful and memorable movie themes...

Slightly annoying, but tolerable.

Despite all extatic reviews, I will say that this CD is annoying. It would be much better without repetitive sax solo-why it has to sound the same on all tracks? Lovely Congolese pop music!

A gorgeous collection of early Congolese pop, recorded around 1960. This features some of the biggest names in the business, early in their careers, artists like Manu Dibangu, Docteur Nico and Grand Kalle, performing in a number of record label "house bands," which had nondescript names like the African Team, African Jazz, Negro Succes, etc.... Interestingly, this CD is not a new set that was assembled after the fact: it is actually a reissue of a compilation album that came out in the early '60s. Features plenty of unbelievably cool, hypnotic guitar work, some relatively mellow horn charts, and several tunes that are real doozies, in particular, "Tika Kutupende Kolo," which seems to take its main riff from the song "La Bamba..." This is thoughtfully followed by a fine example of African-style Cuban-flavored rumba, also by the band, African Jazz. Fun with Vocal Chords

Firstly, the song titles listed above aren't song titles at all, they are the titles of the CDs in the Swedish Folk Music series. Ancient Swedish Pastoral Music is music that comes from the vocal chords and lungs (and what powerful lungs they are), from the pastures and fields of Sweden. You'll hear an amazing variety of herding calls, sheep and goat calls, kulning (calling in a vibrato-free high register). There are horns from the meadows: willow bark horn, goat horn. Many of these recordings are remastering of classic radio folk music recorded in the 1950's and 1960's, but there are some more modern musicians like the amazing Lena Willemark (of the Nordic folk bands Frifot and Nordan). The CD closed with a 27 minute live concert recording featuring the vocals of Suzanne Rosenberg (R7), Agnetta Stulpe, Eva Rume, Ana Arunsson and Pella Jacokson. I have enjoyed the elated pleasure of being the only Record Producer of all of Chaino's primitive/Exotic works 40 to 45 years ago. There were a total of 8 LP's that were released out of the 300 or so master tapes that are almost ready to release on the market, with just 6 that have been found so far. It seems the more fans of primitive/Exotic music who discover him, become fans of Chaino. Chaino, a true genius.

I've been a fan of all kinds of music, especially primitive rhythms, for many years, and have a great respect for, the origin of music. I cannot believe what this man Chaino has done to african music . He is the first congo drummer who not only has reinvented primitive percussion, but for the first time, I can enjoy listening to his work. Though still a fan of african drumming, I have always found it boring to listen to until Chaino brought life into it, giving it a new meaning. This CD is so different, I can't describe it. I can't find a musical catagory for it. Great primer for Jazz Butcher newcomers, rare tracks aplenty

Newcomers: This is a great catchy balanced way to start. If you love smart bands, this is the right place surely. For hardcore Jazz Butcher fans, there are plenty of very rare tracks I've never even heard of. And they're good.<p>The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy band has always found a way of slipping through the commercial cracks. Robyn Hitchcock has a cult celebrity. What about Pat Fish & Gang? They're beyond similar with Robyn. Catchy tunes, smart lyrics, distinct humour, but with jazzy spiky guitar atmophere. Certainly a product of punk - only the 'no rules' freedom of punk could allow them to exist. They showed up past late for the punk game, but they applied that expression, and applied better musical tools. This is tuneful stuff. You really need this CD.<p>Blah Blah. Anyway, 'Cake City' collects material from the early-mid '80s Glass Records era. The beauty of this CD is it doesn't play as cute tuneful novelty, there's substance with the jokes. Of course, the gorgous lyrical tunes would perfect in the early '90s. But the balance here is stronger than any Jazz Butcher album from the '80s.<p>For hardcore fans, tracks 12-19 are required. Most of the Jazz Butcher albums are out of print. I own so many impossibly rare JBC records, I thought I knew it all.
