Yet the album still suceeds for the most of it because of some very good songs:
<br />(1) Jay-Z feat. Beyonce Knowles "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" A-. It may not be as slammin' as "Crazy In Love", but is still a refreshing R&B track with Jay-Z's best lyrics since "Money Ain't A Thing"
<br />(2) B2K and P. Diddy "Bump, Bump, Bump" B+. The artists combined with R. Kelly's writing and production make this a highly enjoyable urban dance tune that is just plain fun.
<br />(3) Jennifer Lopez "Jenny From The Block" B. The song is alright despite its laughable material (J.Lo has no loyaties to the Bronx). A slick production and very appropriate running time are effective so that it never drags on.
<br />(4) Nivea feat. Brian and Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge "Don't Mess With My Man" B+. This song worked much more than i had expected it to. Nivea's unique voice mends well with the Jagged Edge boys and the material has a certain impact to it.
<br />(5) LL Cool J "Luv You Better" A. One of the best songs he's recorded in his 19 year career. Getting rid of the swears adds the to quality of the song as a heartfelt ballad and one of 2003's Ten Best Songs. A very successful experiment.
<br />(6) Nelly "Air Force Ones" C+. This song is kinda fun,but "Hot In Herre" and "Dilemma" put it to shame. Theres just not much beneath the surface of this blatant product placement.
<br />(7) Nas "Made You Look" B. Rather standard for Nas, yet the haunting background beat combined with his "razor tounged lyrics" keep it interesting to listen to.
<br />(8) Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell and Uncle Charlie Wilson "Beautiful" B-. This is a good song, but the beat and Pharrell keep it from it's full potential. The names promise much more than the song delivers.
<br />(9) JC Chasez "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" D+. JC just doesnt have the voice to work as a solo artist and the painful marhing band/hip-hop beat gives him nothing at all to work with.
<br />(10) Justin Timberlake "Like I Love You" A. A bissful pop to rap transition with a supremley smooth voice and beat. The track is endlessly listenable and slick & cool. A must hear for rap, hip-hop and R&B fans. Just plain great.
<br />(11) Telepopmusik "Breathe" B. Not a big hit by any means, but still a well made, intriging dance track. It's got some dream like qualities, even if they can't be fully deciphered.
<br />(12) Dru Hill "I Should Be..." A. Dru Hill's return to the music scene (with Sisqo)created this touching, deep and trufull R&B track. It is able to sum up so much emotion and power with pirecing words that are so relevent.
<br />(13) Kelly Rowland "Stole" A-. This is just as good as anything Beyonce has ever done. The story works so well because we have all had/seen somewhat similar experinces. Everthing pulls together for a powerful, thought inspiring track.
<br />(14) Aaliyah "Miss You" A+. After her death or not, this is the best track she ever recorded. The material seems standard, but she makes it very touching and emotional. An utterly beautiful song that should effect everyone.
<br />(15) Amanda Perez "Angel" B. An emotional song that just doesn't pack the power that tracks #13-14 have. Still good though and enjoyable.
<br />(16) Vanessa Carlton "Pretty Baby" A-. The song may sound a little standard, but it is rather unique anbd original. The use images create a very pleasing track with certain relaxing charm and quality.
<br />(17) Keith Urban "Somebody Like You" A. The maximum type of fun you can have with country music. His style, giutar skills and inspiring lyrics make this a good listen for anyone in need of a "pick me up" and demonstrates the rejuvenation of counrty music.
<br />(18) Chevelle "The Red" B+. A well made rock track that packs some emotion, even if only a little bit. They just dont exaclty show why their better than the rest out there.

<br />(20) 3 Doors Down "When I'm Gone" B+. Not a great rock song, but a good one that is catchy and rather different. 3 Doors Down may not be a very good group, but even they can pull of a good song every so often.

<br />Though there's still some BS to be found ("Hovi Baby" is a lyrical and musical mess and "As One" is led by a sample that wasn't hot when P-Ditty used it neither), the album is generally on-point.
<br />
<br />"The Watcher 2" (a revisit to Dre's Chronic opener) finds Jay Z spittin his hottest verse in years, out-shining not only Dr. Dre (and his ghost-writer), but also Rakim (which is not an easy thing for any MC to do). An additional 8-bars to the chorus, sung by vocal-dominatrix "Truth Hurts", only adds more value to the track, making it even better than the original.

<br />"Poppin Tags" is another Jay Z track about ballin, but it's also one of the hottest joints he ever put on one of his albums. With the help of Twista, Killer Mike & Big Boi, Jay manages to hush haters with a classic, covering the same ground as the songs so many people hate him for. It's a braggin-track with a very nice beat (blessed with angelic vocal-samples) and a very well-executed chorus (which is what ultimately makes the song a lot better than most of the stuff he's put out). All four MCs come correct in their own way and everything works.

<br />"Excuse Me, Miss" is an elegant club-joint, produced by The Neptunes (just when you thought they were over-rated). The mid-tempo beat, marked with poppy synthetic drums and "flang" noises, is one of their hottest yet. What makes the song a gem, along with the actual instumental, is the melodic chorus, which, as far as I'm concerned, should've been reserved for Michael Jackson. Nevertheless, Pharrell (of The Neptunes) does a great job and Jay Z isn't bad on the verses neither.

<br />Elsewhere, a crew of guest-artists, including everybody from Scarface to Beyonce Knowles to M.O.P. to Lenny Kravitz to Heavy D (yes, Heavy D) on production, show up for musical chemistry. While most of the collabs do work, Sean Paul don't got no business screaming annoying commands over a wack Timbaland beat ("What They Gonna Do"). You'll wonder why everyone thought Timbaland was so hot in the first place until about 3:34 when the beat totally switches-up for the better. Unfortunately, too little too late makes the track a sleeper. They're idiots for not using that end-beat for the whole track.

<br />Another thing I question is why they chose to edit the word "World Trade" out of Biggie's verse... yeah, I said Biggie's verse... on "A Dream" . It doesn't make any sense to me. His famous simile, "Blew-up like the World Trade", is even more meaningful now. Why not leave it?

<br />Well, among kickin generally-better-than-Blueprint 1-but-still-not-great-enough-to-call-him-the-"Heavy-weight-champion-of-flowers" lyrics, Jay finds time to throw more shots at Nas (on the title-track), ditch male-groupies ("2 Many Hoes") and flex his story-telling skills ("Meet The Parents").

<br />Maybe the album could've been a classic if only the best 11 tracks were released (instead of the 22 presented here, not to mention 3 bonus tracks), but it's still hot as is.

<br />First we have "The Gift", which is the more upbeat of the two discs. It features some unforgettable tracks such as "A Dream", "The Watcher 2", "'03 Bonnie & Clyde", "What They Gonna Do", "The Bounce", and I have to take some time to highlight the track "Hovi Baby". It truly is one of the most catchy and skilled beats ever produced & I think Just Blaze have outdone themselves on this track.

<br />And we have "The Curse", which is then darker and more emotional of the two. This boasts such fantastic songs as the opening track "Diamond Is Forever", "Meet The Parents", "Some How, Some Way", "Blueprint 2", and a song featured in the blockbuster movie "Cradle To The Grave" (I think it's that movie) which is "N**** Please".

<br />With some great collaborations spanning over the discs including Dr. Dre, Rakim, Beyonce Knowles, Sean Paul, Twista, Big Boi, Lenny Kravitz and more, this promises to avoid disappointment for any Jay-Z or rap fan in general. It could have been a great album if he'd gone at it properly, but when you've listened to the entire thing you feel as Jay-Z gave a real half-hearted attempt. The biggest clue to this his is flow. It's wack! Half the time he sounds as if he was asleep in the booth. Sometimes he's got his urgency and presicion back, but at other times it's out the window. However, it's clear overall that Jay suffers from the double disc syndrome - he just can't drop enough hot tracks to pull it off.

<br />Disc one - "The Gift" - is actually alright. Better than that, at times it's pretty amazing. It starts strongly with "A Dream" featuring Faith Evans and Notorious B.I.G., whoes verse from his classic song "Juicy" works well over Kanye West's beat. Other good tracks include "Hovi Baby", which has a more old skool Jay vibe, "All Around The World" with LaToiya Williams (where is her solo album?!?!), "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" and "Excuse Me Miss". This disc also features one of Jay-Z's best songs and a hands down classic, "Poppin' Tags", on which Big Boi, Killer Mike and Twista all show up and shine on. The rest of the tracks on this disc are so wack it's not real, also featuring one of the worst songs Jay-Z's ever done, "What They Gonna Do", with Sean Paul - why do people like him? 3 stars for Disc 1.

<br />The second disc - "The Curse" - is clearly the weakest out of the two albums. It starts out strongly with "Diamond Is Forever" where Jay reps the Roc to the fullest. "U Don't Know (Remix)" with M.O.P. is trill, as are "Meet The Parents" - best song on Disc 2 - "Some How Some Way, "Blueprint 2", "As One" and the bonus track "Bhhhhhs & Sisters", which is retake on NWA's "A Bhhhh Is A Bhhhh". 2 stars for Disc 2.

If there'd been 13/14 out of 25 Jay would have had a 5 stars album, but there's too much filler and inconsistency for that as it stands. Carter, then The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, then The Blueprint, then Unplugged, then The Blueprint II: The Gift & The Curse(which deserves 3.5 stars), then The Blueprint 2.1, and then The Black Album. Jay-Z has definently changed from his Reasonable Doubt days to this album, The Blueprint II. Ever since Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z has gone more commercial.

It coulda been another 5 star classic if he put it into one 70-75 minute cd and left some of the filler tracks off but I'd still give it 4.5 stars. It has some classics on here and unlike him (usually) he heavily features a lot of rappers on this one. the best tracks are:
