Homework #1: Affordance and Mapping (50 points)

1) (1 points) Conceptual model

Using the notion of conceptual models, contrast the arrangement of controls for the 2 stovetops below. Why were labels used in (a) but not in (b)?

2) (10 points) Mapping

The following interface is used to adjust the setting of a car seat. Explain in your own words why this interface is likely to be readily understood by users.

 

3) (30 points) Affordances

  1. (4 points each) Document 3 examples of an every day device or object, which affordances correctly reflect how to use the device/object. For each example, provide a description of the device/object (either an annotated photo, an annotated  sketch or a textual description), and explain why you think the design is successful conveying the intended purpose;

  2. (4 points each) Document 3 examples of an every day device or object, which affordances does not correctly reflect how to use the device/object. For each example, provide a description of the device/object (either an annotated  photo, an annotated  sketch or a textual description), and explain why you think the design fails to conveying the intended purpose;

  3. (6 points) Pick one of the example you described in question b) and propose a new design addressing the problem(s) you identified. Your solution should be practical within reason.
