Project teams:
Team 1: Jason Filippou, Justin Wagner, Ramakrishna Padmanabhan
We wish to enhance the student TA interaction experience during office hours. Our goal is to minimize waiting time for students and to increase TA productivity. We have observed that office hours often turn chaotic; there are more students in the room than the TA can handle, and the TA often has to end up answering the same questions repeatedly, to multiple students. The current system (whenever applied) has students writing their names on the board, and the TA calls students in order. Although the TAs try to spend time efficiently with students, some students end up spending too much time with the TA, which leads to the TA’s time being inefficiently allocated among the students. We feel that a good scheduling system can help ameliorate this problem considerably.

Library guide application - We can allow for searching through the umd library database but the more novel behavior is to guide the user through the library to the appropriate book shelves. It can also provide location data of photocopiers, wall outlets, internet access, etc.

Event notification: Personalized notification for ongoing events on campus using user preferences, time and geographic proximity.

Since we came here we noticed that parking is a big issue in US. We often see our friends get citation because they shouldn’t park in that specific parking lot at a specific time of the day. Usually, because there were a sports game and they forget about that. Briefly, our idea is to build a system that notifies the owner of violated cars to move their car before they get a citation. For example 30 minutes before their permit ends (Depending on the location of parking lot, the respite time could be different). The system must detect plate number of cars parked in campus, using a camera, checks how long that car is permitted to stay on that specific location, and then notify the owner (by text message, email, or phone call) if necessary.

Catch The Bus - The goal in the project is to develop a mobile application that helps the students catch the UMD shuttles in time. This application will employ information about the student's context in addition to other sources of information to achieve the desired objective.
Team 6: Yunus Basagalar, Vassilios Lekakis and Brianna Ren
Communication is very important part of human daily life. How and what a person communicate depends on how this person perceives the other party. For instance, a child would talk respectfully with his/her parents. On the other hand, he/she could kept some secrets only to share with his/her friends since he/she feels more unrestrained. People appears in variety of roles within the communication depending on the context they are in as the child in example does. Being people's surrogates in digital/virtual world, we believe same principle holds for devices too. We are planning to build a proof of concept personal data management system. Personal data managements systems are good for disseminating/sharing/replicating your data according to device limitations/capabilities and preferences. Also, they are responsible for keeping these replicas consistent with each other. The imminent problem is how to prevent accesses to your sensitive data. You might still want to share it with some people but not with others. We believe that a solution to this problem might lie in introducing roles into these systems. For instance, you might share your sensitive data with devices having family role but not with the ones having collegaues role. Two members of our team currently working on such system as their research project and we will finish the implementation during this semester. Second problem, which is more related to this class, is what happens when a device might play multiple roles. First idea is to present all of your role purse to user through application and let him/her pick the appropriate role. This would probably hurt the usability of applications. Therefore, we want to come up with an automated solution as part of our project. This solution could combine contextual information such as location, devices nearby, time of day, your moving speed etc.
