December 25, 2012. Scientific American selected LeafSnap, an electronic guide developed by researchers from Columbia University, UMD, and the Smithsonian Institution, for “Scientific American Staff Picks: 10 Apps for Your Smart Phone or Tablet.”

December 20, 2012. Ben Shneiderman and Anne Rose interviewed by Forrest Shull of IEEE Software for his article, “The Human Element in Social Networking,” dated January 3, 2013. Videos of their interviews were published on ieeeComputerSociety’s YouTube channel as “Software Support for Effective Social Networks: Nation of Neighbors” and “Software Support for Effective Social Networks: International Children’s Digital Library.”

October 2012. Ben Shneiderman received IEEE Visualization Career Award from the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community.

Septemer 18, 2012. Ben Bederson spoke on WAMU 88.5’s Kojo Nnamdi Show discussing “Creativity and the Patent Wars.”

June 7, 2012. Jimmy Lin's work at Twitter was mentioned in The New York Times Bits article, "Twitter Knows When You Sleep, and More."

June 4, 2012. Jimmy Lin’s article on his sabbatical as a Twitter engineer, “Studying rapidly evolving user interests,” appeared on Twitter’s Engineering Blog.

May 28, 2012. Cody Dunne’s information visualization work on motif simplification appeared in online blog FlowingData, “Network diagrams simplified,” by Kim Rees.

May 27, 2012. The HCIL’s 29th Annual Symposium and many of the lab’s researchers and projects were featured in online blog Flowing Data, “Thoughts on the HCIL symposium” by Kim Rees.

May 24, 2012. Justin Grimes wrote a follow up article, Sunlight Foundation, “Tools for Transparency: A How-to Guide for Social Network Analysis with NodeXL.”

May 18, 2012. Justin Grimes’ article, “Tools for Transparency: NodeXL,” appeared in the online blog Sunlight Foundation. It features a social network analysis use for NodeXL, software developed collaboratively by Ben Shneiderman, Cody Dunne, Udayan Khurana, and many others.

May 7, 2012. Jon Froehlich, Leah Findlater and co-authors received an Honorable Mention for "The design and evaluation of prototype eco-feedback displays for fixture-level water usage data," and Leah Findlater and co-authors received Honorable Mentions for "WalkType: Using accelerometer data to accommodate situational impairments in mobile touch screen text entry" and "Beyond QWERTY: Augmenting touch-screen keyboards with multi-touch gestures for nonalphanumeric input."

May 6, 2012. Ben Bederson received plaque from Brad Myers as new ACM CHI Fellow at CHI 2012 Conference in Austin, TX.

February 15, 2012. Governor O’Malley announced on YouTube that he and the State of Maryland would become the newest Founding Partner of Allison Druin and Ira Chinoy’s interdisciplinary Future of Information Alliance.

February 1, 2012. Jeffrey Heer and Ben Shneiderman’s article, "A Taxonomy of Tools that Support the Fluent and Flexible Use of Visualizations," appeared in Interactive Dynamics for Visual Analysis. The article was subsequently Slashdotted (March 3).

January 31, 2012. Philip Resnik spoke on the Kojo Nnamdi Show, “Tech Tuesday,” about ways to use social media to gather information about people’s sentiment towards politicians and political issues, "New Frontiers in Political Polling: Social Media and 'Sentiment Analysis.'".

January 24, 2012. Ben Bederson was the primary source for Washington Post full-page graphic by Bonnie Berkowitz and Alberto Cuadra on "Touchscreens: How they work.”

Throughout the year, Allison Druin was featured monthly on WAMU 88.5’s Kojo Nnamdi Show as the “Computer Gal,” as a technology correspondent for "The Computer Guys & Gal."
