Aravind Srinivasan was an invited speaker at the SIAM Workshop on Network Science, which was co-located with the SIAM Annual Meeting in July, 2013. He was one among two invited speakers; in addition, there were 22 contributed talks and a poster session.  read more

The Department is pleased to announce that David Van Horn will join our faculty this coming Fall. David is currently a Research Assistant Professor at Northeastern University. David's research focuses on program analysis and its applications to programming languages, software engineering, verification, and security. Specifically, he works on the design, implementation, and use of programming languages to enable the production of software that can be mechanically reasoned about, with the ultimate goal of enabling the construction of reusable, trusted software components. Ph.D. student Rajesh Chitnis is a co-author of "List H-Coloring a Graph by Removing Few Vertices", which was recently selected as a winner of the European Symposium on Algorithms' Best Paper Award. The paper will be formally recognized at ESA's Annual Symposium held in Sophia Antipolis, France in September. Chitnis is advised by Professor MohammadTaghi Hajiaghayi.  read more

Zia Khan will be joining as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, UMIACS, and the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB) in December of 2013. Zia has a Ph. D. from Princeton University's Department of Computer Science where he was a student in the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. Zia also holds a dual B.S. degree in computer science and biology from Carnegie Mellon University. One June 7th 2013, Dieter Rombach, a former professor at UMD was given a Festakt to celebrate his 60th birthday. The program was held at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering and attended by several German dignitaries. Professor Basili was on the program to honor him. Ph.D. Alumnus Paulo Shakarian ('11) and CS Undergrad Andrew Ruef are co-authors of a new book, Introduction to Cyber-Warfare: A Multidisciplinary Approach. Shakarian is a Major in the U.S. Army and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. He was advised by V.S. Subrahmanian.
