In 2021, when Jade LeSchack was a high school senior imagining herself at potential colleges, she was already entranced by physics—quantum physics in particular. The University of Maryland’s computer science program ranks 8th among the country’s public undergraduate programs in the 2023 edition of U.S. News & World Report ’s “Best Colleges.” The program ranks 16th overall, climbing two spots this year. On Wednesday, August 24, the department hosted its annual Orientation Day to welcome its Fall 2022 cohort of graduate students. The event was attended by more than 60 incoming PhD students and 20 new Master of Science students. Companies spend vast amounts of time and millions of dollars on the development of neural network models that are used in facial recognition, artificial intelligence (AI) art generators and other cutting-edge technologies. When it comes to solving a problem, it can be easy to jump straight to the solution and forget about brainstorming and forming ideas. New infrastructure at the University of Maryland is expanding computing access to undergraduate students while allowing machine learning researchers to model more data than ever before. Michael Hicks , a professor of computer science with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies , was recently recognized for his work in improving fuzz testing—a quality assurance technique used to discover coding errors and security loopholes in software.
