Snigdha Chaturvedi, a Computer Science Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Hal Daume III, and Kotaro Hara, a Computer Science Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Jon Froehlich, have each been awarded a 2014 IBM Ph.D. Fellowship. Computer Science Department Alumnus Ben Langmead was awarded the 2014 Sloan Research Fellowship. Granted by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, this award identifies 126 early-career scientists based on their potential to contribute fundamentally significant research to a wider academic community. Langmead received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland Department of Computer Science in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Computer Science Department Alumnus and Affiliate Senior Research Scientist Dr. David Doermann, Ph.D. ’93, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to research and development of automatic analysis and processing of document page imaging. Dr. Moustafa Youssef has been named an ACM Distinguished Speaker as part of the ACM Distinguished Speakers Program. Dr. Youssef graduated with his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 2004. He was advised by Dr. Ashok Agrawala; he concentrated on wireless networking. Dr. Youssef is now an Associate Professor at the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology and the Alexandria University in Egypt.
