Application Status

Most PhD applicants for Fall will be notified of their admission status between mid-February and late March, with potential for offers up until mid-April. Some applicants to the M.S. program will be notified during this time, but the majority of M.S. decisions will be communicated in late April. Applicants are notified via e-mail by the department. For this reason we ask that you do not send us requests for updates on your application review status

Letter of Recommendation:
  • LOR can arrive slightly after the deadline
  • If your recommender encounters any technical issues during the submission process, we recommend contacting the Graduate School directly for assistance at gradappsupport@umd.edu.

Deadline for English Proficiency Scores:

  • English proficiency test scores can be submitted slightly after the application deadline.
  • We are aware of registration challenges faced by students from certain regions and will consider these circumstances during the review process.

Waiver for English Score Submission:

  • English proficiency requirements are set by the Graduate School.
  • If you meet the waiver criteria (e.g., degrees from English-speaking countries), this will be determined during your application process. Please refer to English Language Proficiency Requirements | The Graduate School
  • The department cannot waive these requirements. For more details, please refer to the Graduate School's website.

Matching English Course Scores:

  • If your English score report has not yet been matched to your application, the Graduate School is responsible for this process.
  • If there is an unusual delay, please contact the Graduate School directly, as the department does not have access to your official reports until they are matched.

  • Please contact the Graduate School in this case.  Please be sure to include any registration/TRF/ID numbers to aid us in helping to match your scores. Note: The application status is immediately updated upon submission to reflect the receipt of the scores, however, it takes time for our office to receive scores sent from the agency. Please be sure to request the scores 1-2 weeks prior to when you need them to arrive in our office.
  • Please be advised that the time to match a score to an application depends on how the records match up between the application and the scores. (For example, there are frequent instances when an applicant uses different names or abbreviation of names for the application versus ETS, and then it is more difficult to match the two up.)

English Scores Below Required Threshold:

  • You may still submit your current scores. If enrolled, you will be given a timeframe to submit improved scores to meet full enrollment requirements.

Expired Test Scores:

  • If your test scores will expire during the submission period, it is essential to schedule and take new tests as soon as possible. The Graduate School policy mandates that expired test scores cannot be accepted.

Use of Self-Reported Scores:

  • While awaiting your official test reports, you may use self-reported scores as a temporary reference in your application. However, please be aware that these self-reported scores are only considered for preliminary assessment purposes.

  • To ensure fairness and consistency in the application process, official test reports are required for final admission decisions.
