Dear friend, Like you, we are fortunate to have been mentored by some of the great luminaries of theoretical computer science. Among these greats, few have made such lasting contributions as Dick Karp. One of the founders of the field of the theory of computing, Dick has exerted a powerful influence over a diverse array of subfields of computing ranging from algorithms and complexity theory, to computational biology. He was an advisor to over 70 graduate students, and humbly shared his love of algorithms with thousands of undergraduates over the course of 45 years of teaching. It is our great honor to invite you to join us in honoring Dick, on the occasion of his third (and possibly final) retirement from UC Berkeley. The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing, which flourished under Dick’s leadership as Founding Director, is launching a short fundraising campaign in his honor, which will fittingly culminate on π Day – 3.14.2019. We ask you to take a minute between now and π Day to make a gift of any size to the Simons Institute Richard M. Karp Fund, which will provide vital support for the mission and activities of the institute Dick founded. A few alumni have established a challenge fund, which seeks to inspire at least 50 more gifts by 3.14.2019. You may make a gift directly at https://simons.berkeley.edu/support/donate or via check, wire transfer, securities, or as an estate/planned gift, as described below. For questions, please contact Amy Ambrose at amyambrose@berkeley.edu or +1 510 944 6674. Separately, we are delighted to share that the Simons Institute will be establishing the Richard M. Karp Distinguished Lectures, a series of talks on campus by eminent computing theorists. The Institute will also be creating a permanent installation in Calvin Lab celebrating Dick’s lifelong contributions to the field of theoretical computer science. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Dick’s legacy. Thanks for your support, and we look forward to connecting with you soon. Again, to make a gift directly online to the Richard M. Karp Fund, visit: https://simons.berkeley.edu/support/donate.
