We have discussed examples of metrics the could be used to assess
whether a piece of software is a "success" from an HCI perspective
and Jakob Nielsen's "Heuristic Evaluation" process and categories
for evaluating a piece of software for usability (circa late 1990s).
The ideas at a high level were to define success in terms we could
study/measure/etc.
and to
support critiques in a useful, standardized, and
meaningful way.
For this assignment, either within your field of study or an area of interest within that field(other than HCI) or in a field/area you might explore in your capstone, you will be looking to define success metrics and to modify (or completely retool) Nielsen's process and/or categories in a way such that they would be of use for giving useful, standardized, and meaningful critiques toward accomplishing the main goals of practitioners in that field/area, while not squashing creativity. My suspicion is that the "target" for the latter would be the categories. For each category that you present, please give a descriptive name for it, a short explanation of it (one or two paragraphs should do), and an example of how it could be applied. If you have many, pick the top 5 and present your information for those, and indicate that there would be others. If you feel that the process itself needs to change, you can present a brief discussion of why you think that is the case and outline ideas for how it might change, but do not have to exhaustively define the entire process in detail. |
