Fall 2014 - Homework #1: Working a senario - Due by class time on October 6th

In class we have discussed the idea of user-centered and task-centered design. On September 24th I presented the following scenario:

A man carrying a demanding toddler buys an umbrella stroller
(red is preferred but blue is acceptable), pays for it in cash, and uses it immediately

We then discussed some interface and design implications that could be extracted from that one scenario.

For this homework, consider the following scenario in the same context:

An elderly arthritic woman is price-comparing the costs of a child's bedroom set, consisting of a wooden desk, a chair, a single bed, a mattress, a bedspread, and a pillow. She takes the description and total cost away with her, to check against other stores. Two hours later, she returns and decides to buy everything but the chair.

What are the interface and design implications that can be extracted from this new scenario?

  • First, make a list of all of the design and interface implications that you can think of surrounding this single scenario. You will print that to a PDF and e-mail it to me at egolubUMD@gmail.com with the subject "HW #1" before class time on October 6th.
  • Second, after doing that, please visit this Google Moderator page to contribute some of your ideas (three to five) and vote up existing ideas there that were on your list as well. Please try to add to this before October 5th and then visit it again on October 6th to vote on ideas that were added after your contributions.

Remember, you will turn in the list from the first part document by "printing" it to a PDF file and then sending it to me at egolubUMD@gmail.com with the subject as "HW #1".
