Yes! Portugal are through! However, I am five smackers down. I bet 1-1 and Portugal to win on penalties, but G bet 2-2 and Portugal to win on penalties. And although neither of us debated on whether the silver goals count, but it was decided that G wins by default.
Quite amazingly, Luiz Felipe Scolari has done it again. Or maybe not amazingly, because England, to put it this way, were only outcrapped by a dung shed. But the thing is, Portugal didn't lose despite throwing everything they had (and Luis Figo out of what was almost his last international match...). So yes, justice is served a second time on a shiny silver platter, much helped because England have about as much steely nerves as an amoeba. But many kudos to Scolari, again, for beating a team of massive, underachieving egos into shape. And what wide smiles too, for a country with people who have been robbed of US$4 billion for Euro 2004 in the midst of a recession. And the couldn't-give-a-tinker's-cuss, super deadpan look of the Eric Bischoff dead-ringer, Deco, as he took the spot-kick... priceless.
Great job, Portugal. But from here they meet either Sweden or Holland, and although I've been rooting for Portugal since Scolari's tenure began the future looks hazy for them. But I'm sure they won't give up without a fight. Oh, and to cap up a day of served justice, the US Supreme Court has refused to order Dick Cheney to urlLink reveal the Bush administration's energy policies. Dick Cheney still receives yearly payouts from Halliburton, this world's greatest cheats since Enron bit the dust, and also *that* oil company that won many lucrative Iraqi reconstruction contracts uncontested.
