today's food review: mutton soup i woke up late today, so at four pm i decided to have a very late "brunch"--supposedly an singapore-exclusive term from the obvious coinage of the first two meals of the day, but its existence has somewhat eluded my attention since the beginning of time. till recently, that is. so i had mutton soup at a hawker centre. the soup is as advertised: mutton slices, a few pieces of coriander and exactly six short stalks of young celery, sliced ginger in the soup.
and that is all. the taste of the soup, depending on your mood, teeters on the fine line between mediocrity and weird tastiness--it is reminiscent of bak ku teh, which i like (very much). the mutton slices are well-cooked and taste brilliant when matched with the chilli sauce--one of those made of chilli paste easily available at the market doused with plenty of lime with enough to ruin a supermodel's face.
you would expect extras--but you get none. the surprising thing is that this is one of the times where you order a soupy dish with so little in it that you can't actually finish with two bowls of rice. instead i walked home briskly with a stomach threatening to empty itself at a flash of my disobedience. or maybe it's just me--yesterday i couldn't even finish a upsized burger king meal and a cheesecake pie, which i have been able to do for the past century. thank you thank you thank you. let me nurse my stomach, you pitiful monkeys.
