No, I haven't seen the whole thing, but I'm really kind of weirded out to see the President holding a prime time press conference about Iraq. I'm just a political science undergrad, but I am pretty sure that this is a campaign move. I mean, primetime, repeated catch phrases. A singular message topped with sweets about America's strength, the opportunity of freedom, and God's will, it sounds like a rallying of the troops and a move to make Iraq the central theme of the campaign. The 'ol "What? This economy? " trick. Tomorrow's airwaves are going to be rife with debate.
One side slamming the other, its going to be dirty, and I don't know if I have the stomach for it. In Monday's campaigns class, we debated ethics. It comes down to two ideas: Civic responsibility vs. Self interest. Civic Responsibility: a campaign manger works with a responsibility for the public good, and for democracy. A society with civic responsibility will eventually lead to a perfect society. Self-interest: a responsibility to the individual. A society where people serve their own self-interest will eventually lead to a perfect society. I think my political life will fall in the realm of Civic responsibility.
The idea of ends justifying the means troubles me. Mix that with an overall disenfranchisement in my supposed chosen field and you get the usual mess of... well confusion.
