a black man taught him how to sing, and then they crowned him king Some people have been a bit on the peeved side regarding my comments about Elvis Presley. While I dont despise the man, and will admit that he released some fine recordings and was an excellent, unique singer, my main beef with the guy is the fact that he was (and still is) called the King of Rock and Roll. Now listen closely, Elvis fans, because this is where youll begin your long, bitter hatred and resentment toward me. I believe it is racist to call Elvis Presley the King of Rock and Roll. Why? Thats an easy one. Long before Elvis came along, there was rock and roll, and it was being performed by some pretty talented people. Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, and -- perhaps the most underrated and overly screwed-over figure in music history -- Bo Diddley. Those are just a few of Elvis predecessors. But along came Presley, white as a loaf of Wonder Bread, and now society can put an acceptable Caucasian face on rock and roll. We cant call a colored person the King of anything, now can we? Well heres a white man who can sing that crazy rhythm music just fine. So here you go, Elvis! Youre the King!
