EVERY DAY IS A WINDING ROAD! To elaborate on my previous post So anyway, on Saturday afternoon, I went out to buy a new microwave oven and met the following individuals: * At Best Buy - Two Mexican women named Regina and Lourdes. Actually, this wasnt that interesting. I practiced my Spanish on both of them. Regina was the woman who helped me pick out the microwave, Lourdes, my checkout girl. I didnt know the Spanish word for microwave but they understood me just the same. Imagine that.
* At The Container Store (where I stopped by to pick up two laundry baskets, four plastic shoeboxes for storing my mountains of cheap makeup and a shower curtain) a post-op trannsexual named Rebecca. Wendy: Id like to pay for these, please. Rebecca: No problem. By the way, I love your jeans! (Gestures at my low-rise, denim Joie cargo pants). Wendy: (Notices that Rebecca is wearing the same pants in a larger size. ) Wendy: Thanks! I got them at Barneys. I began a conversation with Rebecca that was unrelated to our mutual jeans or my purchases.
As it happens, she (he) is an electrical engineer with 20 years of experience AND has an MBA. No one will hire her, she/he told me, so she resorted to a retail job. I was fascinated by this person. To describe her here does not do her appearance justice. She was over 6 tall, with a shock of blonde hair that looked like a wig masquerading as a birds nest, with the aforementioned low-rise jeans, and chipped and torn nails badly in need of a manicure.
Rebecca: (Looking me up and down in an odd way). My goodness, you really have a great look! Wendy: (Feeling strangely embarrassed) Ha ha! Thank you! * Cab ride home A Pakistani cab driver who married his first cousin. (I always engage my cab drivers in conversation, when I can. Most of the time, they are more educated and interesting than I am! ) This particular driver, I found out during my 10-minute ride home, was born in 1958 and came to the U.S. in 1981.
His marriage, to his first cousin (he was 23, she, 18), was arranged by their parents. They are still very happily married and boast 5 children ranging in age from 20 down to 2 . I found this very interesting and wonder if the winners on the t.v. show urlLink Married By America might still stand a chance for happiness. LinktoComments(' ') urlLink ">Comment
