"...And even if nobody loves you, you've still got the love of the loveless. " Sage words. I saw the Eels perform on Sunday night and it was awesome. I went with my cousin and his girlfriend, had a great time and still insist that anyone who reads this buy the entire Eels catalog of records.
While at the show I more than started to realize that I have fallen into a "look. " Ah yes, a "look. " Thick-frame glasses, messy hair and a general feeling of ennui place me squarely within some kind of sub-culture. Geek Chic, perhaps. Not sure how I feel about this. But I do feel the need to claim that I dressed this way first and that I have never, ever, been cool. Speaking of not cool (clever segue), I was able to cultivate a strong distaste for the kid in front of me.
There's a difference between being into a sub-culture and trying too hard. This guy was the latter. From his opening statements about R.E.M. 's last tour ("I mean, I LOVED 'Reveal' but, c'mon, play some stuff from 'Murmur! '") to his corduroy blazer (complete with band buttons) and his Yo La Tengo t-shirt, this guy was born to be on my shit list. Now, I normally have a very "live and let live" attitude (believe it or not). But when the level of bull shit being cranked out is enough to gag an old cattle farmer, I tend to cast a very critical eye upon the shitter.
He danced like everyone should be watching him and not the band, yelled about how drunk he was getting and (sigh) high-fived his buddy when their favorite song came on. I hate. I hate a lot. But the man know as E and his band out shone all of this. I had a great time.
