Q and A with urlLink Brian McLaren from an Article in urlLink Net Results September/October 2003 Q- Why would you make people aware, disturb them, and then tell them to do nothing? A- The human brain isnt made for this kind of rapid change. We have to go inward. We have to hold our disturbance up to God.
We shouldnt react in panic or defensiveness or with a flurry of activity, or we will just make it worse. We must become quiet before God. Q- Why is leading transformation so costly to the clergy who try? A- A pastor trying to help his church transform to reach post moderns is caught between two constituencies: the ninety-nine who are there or the one who wandered away. Or, I a postmodern twist, now the ninety-nine have wandered away. If we abandon the one to search for the ninety-nine, the remaining one feels really alone. To what degree are religious professionals and to what degree are we missionaries? Do we want a nice carrier or do we want to reach the lost?
Missionaries are often martyred. Q- You are the grandson of a missionary who started 400 churches in Angola and you say your best gift is evangelism. What is the evangelistic mindset today? A- Our faith has become obsessed wit how to get to heaven without loving God or loving our neighbor.
Faith is not about crossing a line: its about getting started on a lifelong path. Weve turned the starting line into a finish line, as if crossing that line they are completed in the faith when in fact, theyre just starting. Jesus called for his disciples to be fishers of men. Today people like their fish, but they want them scaled, gutted, filleted, and fired before they have to deal with them. They dont want the ones flopping in the bottom of the boat or swimming in deep water.
