Years ago at a conference called UNISPACE, I presented a policy proposal that recommended creating an international conference center in orbit.
The center would maximize the Overview Effect’s value. Imagine, I argued, if instead of Camp David, Clinton could have hosted the leaders of Israel and Palestine in talks from the perspective of Earth’s upper atmosphere. From there, on the edge of space, the leaders could look down together at their planet island, dwarfed by the expanse of the Solar System, at their tiny stretch of land and feel unified at least in geography.
It was a beautiful idea and as far as I know was lost in obscurity. I bring it up now only to say that maybe that unattainable objectivity can in some part be achieved through VCs. Maybe here, in the electronic expanse of space, leaders can see each other without the borders and feel united. I am certain the Second Superpower will change our lives in so many ways. I’m just trying to think of some of them, but I know my imagination is limited.
