I'm not exactly feeling the renewal yet, but at least I survived the night of falling bullets, as New Years could be known when you live in Texas...
I spent the day celebrating the lightrail kick-off downtown and getting to know my TiVo! Davis, John’s co-op from Penn State, came over for the lightrail festivities and ended up staying most of the day.
He was an Ikea virgin, so he went with John to get toy bins for me, and then they went to the grocery store to buy pazole ingredients, and John made a great pot of pazole. Davis was also a Queer Eye virgin, but I took care of that! Happy birthday to my many relatives who have birthdays today: my bio pop dad, my sister-in-law Kim, my brother-in-law Teddy, and others. Every big holiday like anniversaries or New Years John and I play the where were we game. So here it goes.
On New Years one year ago we were too pregnant to really celebrate the holiday. I could barely stay awake and we drank something stupidly wannabe. Two years ago, we also could barely stay awake until midnight, but it was because we'd been skiing all day in Santa Fe! Three years ago, we were again too pregnant to do any real celebrating. At midnight we walked to the footbridge over Memorial and watched the fireworks go off downtown.
Four years ago, we were in Santa Fe for the big 2000. We opened a bottle of saved champagne at the building site for my bio dad's new house and told the family this was the year we'd chosen to start our family. Five years ago, we were in Fort Collins, Colorado for my cousins Bridgette and Ryan Reed's wedding (their family welcomed little Abigail Reed this past February!).
John and I had just moved back to El Paso to finish our schooling after the last of the co-ops and internships, and we were newlyweds in secrecy since it was the strange months between when we eloped and our actual wedding ceremony. Six years ago we were in Ruidoso with friends John and Lisa. We rented a cabin and played in the snow! Seven years ago we were in El Paso, again with John and Lisa as well as some of Lisa's friends. I remember having a nice bottle of champagne we'd gotten in Napa a month earlier when interviewing at Stanford and Berkley, and John's tea-totaling friends were less than impressed.
Eight years ago, we were again in Ruidoso with John and Lisa, as well as Ginger Hague, a friend of theirs from the dark days of high school. It was my first big outing with his friends from his old life. Nine years ago... Here's the controversy. It was our first New Years together and we can't remember how it was spent. Somebody help us please!
Maybe nine was the first Ruidoso thing and it's eight we can't recall, but nonetheless, it's the first holiday ever that we've forgotten! I've created somewhat of a log here and now, so this should never happen again.
