If you've seen the news at all today, I'm sure you heard about this breastmilk study. A hazardous anti-flammable chemical was found in the breastmilk of many Texas women. Newscasts on every channel are advertising for their upcoming news hour in the middle of shows with lines like, Breastmilk might not be the safest thing for your baby!
and Thought breast was best? Maybe not for some Texas women... I pulled the story off the AP to see just what they were talking about. Indoor air exposure to this chemical can come from anything from your TV to furniture to copy machines. Only Maine and California have taken steps to address its use (big shock that Texas, the pollutant-friendly state, has not joined that battle) Buried in the bottom of it is the information from the study's press release that I'm sure no one caught.
It says the chemical has not been linked to any developmental problems and whatever health effects it may cause probably already take effect in the womb. It goes on to say women should not stop breastfeeding. Every TV station here in Houston and the Chronicle carried this. What a sad, horrible thing they've done by contributing to the bad reputation breastfeeding carries for so many in this country.
Dr. Sears addresses the issue of pollutants in breastmilk in many of his books over and over. He says with very few exceptions (like Three Mile Island) the developmental benefit of breastmilk is still greater than whatever exposure risk it may also contain. John made the good point that this contaminant or worse contaminants are almost assuredly present in the water one would use to mix formula here in Texas or the un-organic babyfood most people use.
