Ok. So I've been told on occasion that I really don't talk all that often. Let's analyse this folks! People like to talk. We can't deny this. We've built entire cultures on it. ("That Jesus bloke, he just cured a lepper! ") But could it be that people talk too much? I'm no stranger to not talking, but some people see silences as a bad thing.
Today, I was out in the garden with the dog for quite some time. I was just sat on a bench and she was just playing with her ball. I thought back to a film I saw last night. One scene of the film (Pulp Fiction, I think. Bear with me..) made me listen. Some guy and some woman were in a bar and there was a silence, when the woman started talking about "comfortable silences". A silence where both parties weren't talking, but it wasn't awkward. They just weren't talking. I now understand what it truly means to enjoy another's company. I've been round a friend's house and we've just sat reading books. I've walked to school or sat around outside with friends, not saying anything. You don't have to talk to enjoy being with someone.. You just have to.. be there.
It's made me realise my own predicament. When I'm not talking, it's not because I don't really want to, but because I don't feel the need to. I just want to enjoy another's company. Must we talk to do that?
