one of the second year residents told me a rather interesting story the other day. apparently a 20 year old woman underwent in vitro fertilization and became pregnant with triplets. as is the case with a multiple gestation, she went into preterm labor at 27-28 weeks (term labor is 37-41 weeks, postterm is >41) and gave birth to a set of identical twins boys and another boy. so basically they placed numerous fertilized embryos in her uterus, only two were viable and one of those just happened to split to form two identical embryos for a grand total of three. now here's the really interesting part. the identical boys have klinefelters syndrome (XXY) and both have an abnormal connection between their esophagus and trachea.
the other boy was completely healthy. now, you must be asking, "how often do 20 year olds need in vitro fertilization to get pregnant? " the answer: beats the shit out of me, but a standard, bull shit answer is, "not very often. " so this mom is pretty crazy as noticed by her desire to get pregnant using a $10-15k procedure, but she also named her boys chandler, joey, and ross...
