What a fab day of television. This morning the Emmy Awards on Fox 8, then this afternoon The Bad News Bears got a screening on Channel 9. It's almost as though there's a TV junkie somewhere who'd sold his soul. What made the Emmy Awards much more watchable this year than most was that Fox 8 broadcast the event live from the US.
The benefit of this was that I didn't spend the day trying to avoid the media all day so as not to be spoiled. While it was disappointing that Aaron Sorkin missed out on an award for writing on The West Wing, it was fantastic to see the show score an award for Best Drama. The show had a lot of critics this year for lacking relevance in the current political climate. It was often claimed that the show should reflect a more Republican attitude (you know, despite the fact that the show is about a Democratic leadership....). What a lot of these same critics have missed is that its never really been a show about politics. It's always been about supporting the ideal of being intelligent, a quality that the show has offered in bucketloads over the last season.
The win was a nice final hurrah for Sorkin. Something that always suprises me is the way that Conan O'Brien manages to find himself on stage at the Emmy's (such as his hosting gig last year), yet the jewel in NBC's late night crown Jay Leno is never to be seen. It's believed that Conan is the heir apparent to The Tonight Show once Leno decides he wants out, but after watching the way Conan takes control of an audience at an event like the Emmy's, it's a constant marvel that NBC hasn't tried to show Leno the door. Classiest moment of the evening was this hornbag moment:
