I came across an article by Orson Scott Card entitled Homosexual "Marriage" and Civilization . Naturally, since we both belong to the same church, I agree with many of his points. However, there was one statement that I found to be odd, particularly since much of the article was well-written. So it is a flat lie to say that homosexuals are deprived of any civil right pertaining to marriage.
To get those civil rights, all homosexuals have to do is find someone of the opposite sex willing to join them in marriage. Surely, Card isn’t naïve enough to think gays and lesbians just want to get married absolutely. Surely he doesn’t think the issue is not being able to get married at all. It is clear that homosexuals want to marry other homosexuals, just as heterosexuals are able to marry other heterosexuals.
To suggest that they are entitled to marriage as long as they marry someone they don’t want to is a ridiculous claim and belittles the seriousness of the issue. I don’t agree with gay marriages in and of themselves—see my urlLink previous comments —but if someone is going to make a comment like that, it’s no wonder we’re labelled as bigots, backwards and intolerant. urlLink Read more...
