This past weekend we attended the Ben J. Elston Family Reunion. This is Connie's great grandfather.
This was my second reunion (held every 4 years) to attend and I think it was a little better than the last one (which was good as well). I got to meet even more relatives and learned a little bit more about the family into which I married. A couple of things I noticed: lots of eye-glasses (explains my son's glasses), lots of spiritual faith and unity.
Searching around the net, I found this from the Mission Messenger (1964): We regret to report the death of our aged brother, Ben J. Elston, DeRidder, Louisiana, at the age of 97 years. This brother began preaching in 1890 and baptized more than 1000 persons in his first thirty years of public proclamation. He studied at Lexington, Kentucky, as a young man, under J. W. McGarvey and I. B. Grubbs. In the following photo, we are singing from the "old Blue Book" on Friday night.
This is only a 70% of the family members that attended. There were a few other families that arrived on Saturday (and one on Sunday morning). The reunion was held at the Christian Youth Encampment (CYE) in DeRidder. Since the camp is only a few miles from my mother's home, it provided a good opportunity to visit my family as well.
