Ok, so I got this idea. Why don't I start a blog where I put down my thoughts, observations, and work-in-progress for upcoming sermons and then invite people to offer their comments, thoughts, interpretations, and suggestions?
Hopefully this accomplishes several purposes. 1) It encourages me to begin the process early enough to include others. 2) I get other perspectives on the Biblical texts and feedback on my ideas before preaching them. 3) I get to spend more time online! And being the uber-geek wannbe that I am, that's a good thing. So here is how I envision this working (that is if I ever publicize this and if anyone is interested in participating). About a month ahead of time I'll post the lectionary texts for the Sunday I am preaching for people to peruse and think about. A week later I'll post some of my preliminary thoughts on each text and which one I am thinking of going with. About two weeks ahead of time I'll try to have a focus for my sermon and then continue posting about various thoughts on that focus.
I don't plan on posting drafts of my sermons, because those happen late in the process and I'd rather have people hear them first rather than read them. But I will post them after preaching for discussion. Hopefully, anyone reading this will feel free to post their own comments, whatever they may be. Writing a sermon is a daunting task because it is hard to know what to say to a large and somewhat diverse group of people.
The more I talk with the people I am preaching to, the better my sermons should be! One more thing to keep in mind as you read this. Carrie almost always proofreads my sermons and helps me with grammar and clarity. She won't be proofing my posts here, so go easy on me when my posts aren't as polished as they should be. Here we go!
